SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 4 CHAIR’S REPORT VICKI BEKER

It has been an incredibly busy and successful year this year as Chair of Bay Squash, and it was great to celebrate all this success recently at the Geyser City Squash Club. What a fantastic night to recognise all those people in the Bay that have not only contributed, but those players who have succeeded on the court.

A special thanks to Cheryl Te Kani-McQueen and the Geyser Squash Club for being that central location for Bay Squash, enabling us to have a huge turnout for the night. It was such a special night to see so many old friends, family and our younger players carrying on what is a great tradition and pride of culture in the Bay.

To the World Junior Champs, what an incredible event to have hosted in the Bay, and of course to Wayne and his team, Devoy, The Mount and Te Puke, amazing stuff. Underwriting Marcus’s time to the event was not only important for the game of squash in our region, but a fantastic opportunity for Marcus. In some aspects, it was difficult to get on with the business of Bay Squash due to the enormity of the worlds, however without a doubt squash was the winner and we still managed to run a stable ship for our stakeholders in 2017. Well done Marcus and the BOP Board.

I would like to personally thank all the clubs for supporting what we do, and what we endeavour to achieve on your behalf. I would also like to thank every volunteer who never gets thanked but gives up all their valuable time.

The role of Chair for myself extends well beyond the borders of the Bay, with hours of discussions with other Chairs and management around New Zealand. I do this so that NZ Squash delivers to their stakeholders – being the districts and the clubs.

NZ Squash have some challenges in front of them, with the resignation of Jim O’Grady as the CEO, however with this may create some fresh opportunities. We need to be in a position to benefit from these, and also to ensure that we don’t duplicate resources, so we can achieve the maximum return for our levies and our efforts.

For the up and coming year, we are looking for new members of the board, to assist us with strategies of sustainability. The goal is to make sure that the BOP Board is made up of a cross section of club representations from the different clubs around the Bay, ensuring balance of opinions and debate.

Ultimately we would like to work closer with clubs to ensure their financial viability using both NZ and BOP Squash resources. Increasing participation and enjoyment of the game at grass roots is and will always be the success of our game.

Vicki Beker Board Chairman

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 5 MANAGER’S REPORT MARCUS NILES

2017 has been a massive year. We have enjoyed some incredible successes on the court, and we are in a great place off the court.

The biggest aspect of my year was the hosting of the World Junior Championships in Tauranga. I was lucky enough to be appointed Championship Director and got to work with a fantastic team to deliver the event. We surpassed our expectations and the event achieved all our goals and beyond. It was very hard work but it was an experience I will never forget and take great pride in the way the Bay was portrayed on the world stage. A special mention must go to Wayne Werder who was an incredible leader and was truly dedicated to producing a world-class event. He thoroughly deserved the Squash NZ Personality of the Year Award he was presented at the Squash NZ Awards. Interclub was steady again this year with team numbers remaining similar to the past few years. There are pockets of clubs who don’t engage due to travel issues and that remains a challenge for us to work on. Superchamps this year saw a huge increase in participation. We were up from 35 teams last year, to a whopping 50 teams this year! I’m not sure the reason for the uptick in numbers, but it’s something I really hope continues. The other pleasing thing was the winning teams were spread around the clubs, and we came away with two titles to clubs who haven’t had national titles for many years. Great to see. The Eye Junior One Day series was again a great success. A lot of credit must go to the clubs who continue do a good job of running the events. This series is a fantastic vehicle to get new players hooked on our sport, and I see it as a vital tool to increase membership moving forward. Growing our game is still the number one challenge we face. There are some exciting developments on the horizon that could help us arrest the decline in our sport, but it is a challenging environment and we have to get better at working together at club, district and national level. Behind the scenes I have really enjoyed working with the Board this year. I feel like we have made some good strides forward and I am excited about what we can achieve in the next few years. Special thanks goes to our Chairman Vicki Beker who has worked very hard and provided some excellent leadership this year. Having a dedicated and proactive Board is critical to our region’s growth in the future. Financially we are in a great place with some cash reserves that provide some level of comfort, but we are unfortunately still too reliant on gaming charities for funding. As usual, it has been great fun working with Robbie this year. I feel like we are doing some really good things on the coaching front, and our regional squads continue to be a strength for our region, which is a credit to Robbie.

It was fantastic to celebrate our year at the Squash BOP Ball at Geyser City. Nearly 100 people gathered in their flash duds to recognise the achievements of our many national and world champions. Next year I hope we can consolidate on 2017, and look to improve in areas such as refereeing and membership growth, and continue to foster the awesome Bay spirit that we have in our region.

Marcus Niles Regional Manager

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 COACHING DIRECTOR’S 6 REPORT ROBBIE WYATT It has been excellent to be part of another successful year for Squash BOP. So many highlights from Grassroots to High Performance. It started early in the year with a new initiative regarding club visits, with myself & Marcus getting around to all the clubs in the Bay. I think that with the two of us travelling together we covered off so much more with the people involved. I’m hoping that this is what we will do in the future. SQUASH NZ MODULES Very pleased this year with the Squash NZ Coaching Modules. Modules were spread throughout the Bay which was great to see. Get Started, Small Nix, Big Nix, Adult Starter, Club Teams, Competitive Club Graded, Managing the Mind were the Modules completed with 68 parents, volunteers & club coaches attending. Special thanks to Dave Clarke who facilitated the Managing the Mind Modules - Very popular indeed. SCHOOLS & KIWISQUASH LEGACY PROGRAMME Very enjoyable year with the schools. This was in conjunction with the World Junior Champs held in Tauranga in July. We had 8 coaches involved in the first part of the program which was to run Kiwi Squash sessions at different schools that took up this great opportunity as a taster to then attend a 3 day program held at Memorial Park during the World Juniors. Myself , Kylie Lindsey, Lauren Clarke, Ben Grindrod, Mike Dunston, Nadia Hubbard, Josh Oakley & Jamie Oakley were the coaches used. The schools were St Marys Rotorua, Te Puke Primary, Mangatapu, Rotokawa, Chapman College, Omokoroa No. 1, Bethlehem, Matahui, Greenpark, Selwyn Ridge. The second part was the big 3 days at Memorial Park in the same building as the glass court. 9am to 3pm each day with 12 volunteer coaches spread over the days. I ran the content for each session but special thanks to Erin from Sport BOP for coordinating with the schools & their arrival times. It was a huge job. We put through 1200 children in sessions over the 3 days. I strongly believe that school programs are such an important part to our sport. The interest shown with the schools involved this year was great. Next year I would definitely like to spread the Kiwisquash programme further & recruit our coaches to get on board with helping run schools. 2nd & 3rd terms appear to be the times to do this. COACHFORCE Sport BOP were involved a lot with the above. Shan Jensen-Loach is the new Coachforce manager & has been excellent to work with for the last 3 months. The codes are working on a new coaching passport system that once everyone understands & can operate efficiently will be fantastic. For Squash it will mean that monthly reporting will be easier & database of our coaches will be easier to access & will have their up to date qualifications & modules that they have attended. Workshops this year with Sport BOP have been excellent for Professional Development with International facilitator Wayne Goldsmith. BOP JUNIOR SQUADS 2017 Again a very good season for all of our squads. A lot of little guns in the squads & looking excellent for the future. I always say that as a district we have a great group of coaches & we are very lucky so a big thanks to those involved in coaching the squads this year. Dave Clarke, Graeme Randolph, Tweedy Seymour, Kylie Lindsay, Becky Clarke, Lauren Clarke, Wayne Johnston. 2018 is looking excellent. I would like more Development & Future Star girls involved next year. I have a couple of new coaches coming on board to help next year. Looking forward to working with them. A new initiative for next year`s squads is that I am going to combine the Elite Girls & Senior Women so they train together. Danny & Cheryl are going to run these in Rotorua which I think is fantastic & really looking forward to getting this underway. With the Elite Boys also we will combine them with the Senior men. Dave Clarke who has coached the Elite Boys will run this. BOP NZ SQUAD MEMBERS 2017 This year for the BOP was excellent for NZ Squad members. It is a privilege to be in a New Zealand Squad in any sport so we should be proud of our players for achieving this. MALAYSIA TRIP The Malaysian Junior Open was held in Penang in July of this year. Great experience for 6 BOP HP players Te Aorangi Murphy-Fell, Manaia Murphy-Fell, Glenn Templeton, Logan Brill, Joe Smythe, Katie Templeton plus 4 parents that were fantastic. It was an opportunity for our BOP players to see what the standard was like throughout all the age groups. The event had 600 plus entries, one of the biggest in the world. 12 glassbacks at the centre. This is a tourney that I would like to see continue for our BOP players. An amazing experience for all & most importantly great squash & plenty of it. An opportunity to develop our players that are dedicated to squash & show promise as well as a great professional development chance for our coaches at international competition. HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2017 So many highlights but the one that sits right up there for myself was our BOP Senior Womens Team winning the NZ Inter- districts Teams title, the first time in 36 years. Danny, Cheryl & myself were in the BOP mens & womens team in 1981. The 3 of us were there in 2017 as well. So many years of finishing 2nd, but this time the ladies got over the line. A very emotional victory & a proud day for BOP Squash. Amanda had an excellent year on the PSA circuit & becoming World Womens Doubles Champions with partner . Ben Grindrod made the NZ Mens team for the first time & so deserved after all his hard work. The World Junior Womens Champs held in Tauranga. What an amazing event that was. NZ Junior Nationals Glenn Templeton won the Boys Un 17 title. Nadia Hubbard played a fantastic match & nearly beating Kaitlyn Watts in the Girls Un 19 final. Mania Jade-Peeti finished 3rd in the girls Un 15. Mitchell White broke through to finish 4th in the Boys Un 17. In the teams event the Boys finished 3rd. Great effort. CLOSING STATEMENT Looking forward to a busy & productive 2018. There are a lot of good things going on in our district & am always very proud to be involved in the continued development across many areas. Our culture with our juniors of all levels is continuing to be excellent & this is an area that I will always put as a high priority. The overall behaviour of our top juniors & our grass root juniors has been very good & as one of the leading districts we should pride ourselves on that. I would like to say a big thanks to Kylie Lindsay for her time with the BOP. Her coaching expertize will be missed. Good luck to Kylie who is heading over to the UK to learn more about coaching so she can keep developing as a professional coach. Also a huge thanks to Marcus whom I work alongside. His passion for the sport & dedication to his role is amazing.

For the first time since Dame led the team in 1981, the Bay of Plenty Women’s Squash Team are national champions! After years of heartbreak the Bay has finally taken the elusive title. Bridesmaids on countless occasions has shown the consistent strength of the region in women's squash, but the big prize has always been just out of reach. Not this year.

The team was led by professional player Amanda Landers-Murphy. The current BOP Player of the Year has just come off an exceptional World Doubles Champs where she defended her Womens World Title with Joelle King. Amanda has developed into a very strong Doubles player on the world stage, with her ability on the Doubles court being described as "phenomenal" by the team manager. She has also had a good year in the singles arena with recent titles in domestic PSA events.

Joanna Shanks, Camden Te Kani-McQueen & Nadia Hubbard complete the very balanced BOP team that went into the event as top seeds. The team was coached by former professional player Kylie Lindsay, and managed by the experienced Michel Galloway.

First up the girls had a comfortable win over Eastern with all four players enjoying a win. Round two was a match up with Wellington and it was the same 4-0 result, which saw our team through to the familiar ground of the NZ Inter- District Teams Final.

First up in the final was Camden. Fresh off an outstanding World Juniors campaign where she performed outstandingly in the NZ Junior Girls Team, Camden was fired up for a big one in front of her parents who had made the trip to support her, and her brother Matiu who was competing in the BOP Mens team (I'll get the them in a minute). She faced a much higher ranked opponent in Auckland's Juee Bhide. After a tight first game which Camden won 11-9, Juee seemed to get the measure of Camden, winning the next two games comfortably. After the third, coach Kylie Lindsay suggested Camden “reassert herself and be more aggressive. Fight hard and attack”. The words sparked her into life forcing a fifth game with an 11-7 win in the 4th. The final game was all one-way traffic with Camden blowing her opponent off the court 11-1 to give the Bay a fantastic start.

Long-time loyal Bay player Joanna Shanks was next on court against one of NZ's rising stars . “Jo fought very hard as she always does in a Bay shirt” said coach Kylie Lindsay. “She played well and was unlucky not to claim at least one game”. Auckland levelled the tie at 1-all with the 3-0 win.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 11 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS SENIOR NATIONALS Despite feeling the effects of illness, Amanda Landers-Murphy was solid in the next match, taking an important win 3-0, setting up a fascinating final match for all the marbles. It all came down to Nadia Hubbard, who needed to win at least two games to force a count-back. A win for Nadia would seal it for the Bay. Nadia was also part of the recent World Junior Championships, so she was heading into the match at the peak of her powers. Auckland’s Priscilla Wildsmith (over 100 points ahead of Nadia on the grading list) stood between the Bay and a famous victory. Priscilla looked confident from the outset, taking the first game 11-4. Nadia looked to work her way back into the match in the second but was unable to convert, going down 12- 14 but showing enough to give the Bay supporters some hope. Nadia is only 16 years old and she faced a daunting situation. She was 0-2 down against a higher graded opponent and the fate of a region who has been perennial bridesmaids lay firmly on the young shoulders. Nadia stepped up. Kylie noted that “she started moving the ball around nicely. She chased every ball and was volleying confidently.” She claimed a tight third 11-9 meaning she needed the next one to at least force a countback for the title. Again she showed incredible determination to wear her opponent down, winning 11-8 in the 4th. Her confidence, and the hopes of the team, were sky high and there was no looking back. She clinched the long-awaited title with a resounding 11-6 final game. It was an emotional victory for the Bay Ladies who have been so close so many times over the last 36 years. Cheryl Te Kani-McQueen was in the 1981 team that last won the title for the Bay and she was excited to be part of the supporters at the club. She summed up the feeling by saying “We are so proud of our girls. It means a lot to the Bay, especially those of us who have been involved and represented the Bay in the past.” In the Men’s competition, the boys were seeded 3rd, and were led by current professional Ben Grindrod. Evergreen Bay stalwart Paul Bedford, and Auckland-based players Aaron Kopittke and Matiu Te Kani-McQueen completed the Bay team. The first round was no cake-walk for the Bay, with neighbours Eastern proving a tough task, but the Bay completed a 3-1 victory to see them into the semi-finals where they faced a very youthful Auckland team. Only one game separated the two teams with the Bay getting pipped on a countback, forcing our lads into a 3rd/4th playoff against Canterbury. A 1-3 loss saw the men’s team complete the event in 4th place. Coach Robbie Wyatt was very proud of how the team performed “You know, the team really fought hard. They gave it absolutely everything. There was a great team culture throughout the Bay side, and that showed through in the passion they displayed on court.”

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 13 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS

NEW ZEALAND MASTERS A happy contingent of 13 Masters Players participated in the National Masters Champs in September at the Kawaroa Park Squash Club in New Plymouth. This year the team was sporting a lot of new blood (virgins Aaron Kopittke, Dean Cole, Amy Porter and Shari Ball) and their energy was clear. The mountain was resplendent in dazzling white while the ocean right beside the KP club was either a churning storm or at the end an idyllic seaside with beautifully symmetrical waves. A marvellous setting for the battles ahead. As usual, the first three days involved the Individuals Event and BOP did really well with three Champions crowned in their age groups. Vicki Beker overcame a spirited challenge from team mate Kathryn McKay in the 50+ age group while Paul Bedford showed his pedigree in the 45+. Michael White, playing in only the Individuals competition, triumphed in the Mens 55+. Mens 45+ Champion Paul Bedford (Geyser City) Womens 50+ Champion Vicki Beker (Taupo) Womens 50+ Runner-up Kathryn McKay (Whakatane) Mens 55+ Champion Michael White (Whakatane)

In the teams, BOP crushed Southland in the first round 9-2, but were not able to overcome the eventual Champion team Auckland going down 7-4 with Paul Bedford and Dean Cole in the mens and Kathryn McKay and Vicki Herdman winning. Dean had two meritorious wins in the first two team matches, perhaps surprising his opponents with his front foot splendour on the T and all round speed. This meant we played off against Waikato for 3rd and 4th and we were determined to better our neighbours and improve against our 4th seeding. Alas, Waikato’s top order in both mens and womens were too good on the day and they won 7-4. A thoroughly enjoyable five days away where the players represented the region superbly and at significant cost to themselves. Off court highlights included the Tuesday night quiz night, which was enthusiastically and loudly participated in by all teams, and the seaside accommodation which was mesmerising in its power and beauty. The 2018 Nationals Masters are to be hosted in BOP at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre in Tauranga and plans are afoot to snatch lots of titles while enjoying the wonderful occasion that the National Masters Squash Championships truly is.

JUNIOR QUADRANGULAR AUCKLAND / BAY OF PLENTY / WAIKATO / NORTHLAND An excellent weekend of squash was held at the 2017 Junior Quad event in Taupo over the weekend of March 31 – April 2 between BOP, Auckland, Waikato & Northland. Auckland took out the title again with a very strong line up of players. Waikato finished a close second with Northland third & BOP a creditable 4th. I can't remember a time when the competition has been so close between BOP, Waikato & Northland. We were pipped at the post 11-9 by both districts. It was great to see the young BOP team putting in a huge effort with many stand out performances. Maiya Winika, our under 11 girl from Putaruru, had a huge battle with Hayley Rhodes from Northland eventually losing 12-10 in the 5th. Amazing effort from both girls. Jack Hudson from Geyser City nearly caused a big upset against Shayden Toka from Northland in BOP vs Northland's final match. Jack came up just short against his higher ranked opponent 16-14 in the 4th. An inspirational performance where Jack gave it everything he had. Our under 11 boy Kyro Stevens went unbeaten throughout the weekend, as did with our under 19 girls pair of Nadia Hubbard & Camden Te Kani-McQueen. The coaching & management were very proud of the BOP teams effort & we are confident our juniors stocks are looking very promising for the future. Robbie Wyatt - Head Coach

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 15 JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS

JUNIOR NATIONALS

The NZ Junior Age Groups and Inter-District teams event are the pinnacle events for junior squash in NZ. The tournament that was held at the Burnside Squash Club from 5th-8th October was the focus of many Bay player's attention as they worked hard to chase titles and better their points and NZ Rankings.

Individual Event: In the Age Group event, we were represented by several talented juniors. Two players emerged from the pack with one National title and a second placing in their respective age groups. Glenn Templeton, who hails from Katikati Squash Club went into the Under 17 draw as top seed. After beating 4th seeded Kobe Fleming 3-0 in the semi-final, Glenn lined up against 2nd seed Willz Donnelly from Gisborne in the final. Glenn proved too strong to take the match in a well-deserved 3 set victory to follow his back-to-back NZ Under 15 titles. Nadia Hubbard from the Lakes High Squash Club was unlucky not to make it two titles for Bay of Plenty. Nadia easily accounted for Rhianne Taiapa in the semi-final winning 3-0, and played out of her skin to push NZ’s top junior Kaitlyn Watts in the Under 19 division in a massive 5-setter eventually losing 14-12 in the 5th set after having two match balls of her own. Another notable performance was Mitchell White’s 4th placing in the U17 boys.

Teams Event: The teams event that followed is a hard fought battle between the districts to find the best region in the country. Four junior players from each region (plus a reserve) are selected, and bragging rights are up for grabs. 2017 was a consolidation year for the BOP Boys team after blooding a number of youngsters last year, along with the welcome return of Sean Dykes. Seeded 4th out of 10 teams, the challenge was to better this seeding. After comfortable wins against Eastern, Northland, and Central, an effective semi-final against eventual winners Auckland proved too much. However, in the playoff for 3rd/4th, BOP triumphed over a strong Southland side 3-1 to finish 3rd overall. The major upside for the boys is all but one of this year’s team will still be eligible in 2018.

The BOP Girls Team also had a consolidation year and were seeded 6th for the teams event. After very close losses to Auckland, Waikato, and Northland, the girls beat Wellington 3-1 in the 7th/8th playoff. All of the girls will be eligible to represent BOP in this event in 2018 which should provide a launching pad for higher honours.

The boys sadly say goodbye to Te Aorangi Murphy-Fell this year who has been a true role-model to the younger boys in the BOP squad. With Nadia Hubbard playing some of the best squash of her life, she will no doubt again be back leading the charge in 2018 and bestowing her wealth of experience upon the BOP girls.

A huge thank you to the coaches Robbie Wyatt and Graham Randolph for the hours of support over the week, and many thanks to the parents who assisted with organization and cooking duties whilst in Christchurch – Andrew and Linda Horscroft, Jenny Wotten, Mark and Hinehaia Murphy-Fell, and Valerie Templeton. I once again commend all the boys and girls who represented BOP. They are great ambassadors for our region who play with pride, and continue to foster a great team culture for future teams to enjoy.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 WSF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 18 Hosted by Devoy Squash & Fitness, Te Puke, and Mount Maunganui

The 2017 WSF World Junior Squash Championships was a fantastic event to be involved in. Two years of planning came to fruition 19-29 July 2017 and the organising committee is very proud of what was delivered and the large amount of positive feedback that has been received. The Championships was the very first world sporting event to ever be hosted in Tauranga City. The organisation and hosting was primarily carried out by a volunteer committee who gave the Championships an edge, providing first class hospitality, professional event management, friendly facilities and a can do attitude. Feedback from players and coaches, world squash officials, local business owners, Tauranga City Council, and the hard working group of 150 volunteers has been extremely positive. We had two goals at the outset: to deliver the best world junior squash championships ever and to put Tauranga on the map. We have had numerous people approach us and congratulate us on delivering the best world junior squash event they have attended. With regard to Tauranga, just about every visitor I have spoken to mentioned in some way how beautiful Tauranga was and how they would love to come back and visit at some point. The Championships have left a legacy for the sport. We sincerely thank Squash New Zealand and the three host clubs (Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre, Mount Squash Club and Te Puke Squash Club) who have shown their capability to run superb international events. We’re delighted that the future looks bright for Tauranga as a host city for the future. We would like to thank the many companies, organisations and people who have supported these Championships. This event simply could not have happened without your support. It was a wonderful occasion and one we will remember for many years to come.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 WSF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 19 Hosted by Devoy Squash & Fitness, Te Puke, and Mount Maunganui

Event Overview • Tauranga was confirmed as the host in August 2015. • The event took over two years to plan. • Staffing was primarily a volunteer workforce consisting of an Organising Committee, a part time paid Championship Director, Event Logistics Manager and Marketing & Communications Manager, and over 150 volunteers. • Dame Susan Devoy officially opened the World Championships. “It’s a real opportunity and privilege to play in your home town, some of my favourite memories were in 1987 when we hosted the world champs in Auckland. I’m just glad there weren’t so many talented Egyptians, Malaysians and so on around then, I would never have stood a chance!” • The Championships were held in four venues: Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre (QEYC) which was the main showcase for the event featuring the all-glass court and seating for up to 1000 spectators; the Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre; Mount Squash Club and Te Puke Squash Club. • 356 Individual matches plus 144 Women’s Teams matches were played during the event. • Players were accommodated at the Trinity Wharf Hotel and Armitage Hotel with transport loops between all the venues. • A host of international referees officiated the Championships. New Zealander Glen Carson was the lead referee for the World Individual men's final. • A number of talent scouts attended for a shopping spree of top junior players to attend Universities on squash scholarships. • Entry was free to the three host clubs with a gold coin entry to the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre. The aim was to make this an affordable family event. Over 15,000 spectators viewed the games. • A slick range of merchandise was offered including hoodies, tees, training jerseys and caps. • Squash New Zealand re-established itself as a prominent World Squash host and venue, with Kiwi’s doing well and performing on home soil and introducing new sponsors and the community to the sport.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 2017 NATIONAL EVENTS 20 COUSINS SHIELD/MITCHELL CUP Hosted by Herne Bay Ponsonby 2-4 June A fantastic result for the Bay with Devoy Squash winning the coveted Cousins Shield for the first time. The Bay has not lifted the shield that decides the strongest club in men's squash in NZ since 1988. The Cousin's Shield (men's) and Mitchell Cup (women's) are the pinnacle teams events for NZs top players, and they are highly sought-after titles. Each club gathers together their best talent, and event rules allow for one imported player for each team, which the serous contenders all take advantage of. The Devoy team was made up of entirely home-grown talent along with returning pro from last year, Josh Larkin from Australia. The line-up was Larkin at 1, Ben Grindrod at 2, Jamie Oakley at 3, Alex Oakley at 4, Josh Oakley at 5, and Sean Dykes as the reserve. Devoy were not considered serious threats to take the title this year. Lining up as 5th seeds, they did not feature in any pre-event predictions. Coach John Oakley said “This win is absolutely amazing, the boys have worked hard and had some spectacular performances. We weren’t expected to win, but we believed we could and we’ve done it”. The opening encounter saw Devoy Squash in a dominant display of squash outplaying Christchurch Squash & Football Club in a 5/0 win. That was the only comfort the team would experience on the road to the title, as their seeding meant they had a very tough draw. The next opponents were two-time defending champions Squashways from Christchurch who they managed to pip 3/2. Jamie Oakley had the match of his life taking down A1 player Oliver Johnston in a tight fought 3/1 win (9/11, 11/9, 11/9, 12/10) and to move Oakley into the higher A1 elite status. Taking on the top seeds Whangarei Squash Club in the semi-finals, Devoy took a good lead with wins from Ben Grindrod against Luke Jones and Jamie Oakley scalping another A1 Michael Sunderland 3/1. It was Josh Oakley who secured the team’s finals spot with a win over Brent Lewis 3/0 in a fine performance by the younger player with clinical backhand drops and smart shot selection. The matches were brutal and exhausting with most matches taking over an hour each. The home town heroes Herne Bay (2nd seeds) were not about to hand the title to Devoy in the finals in front of a packed crowd. Chris Lloyd took an early 2/0 lead over the tired Jamie Oakley and looked set to take the match before Oakley found another gear and grappled the next two games to level the score, but it was Lloyd who held his nerve to take the win. The next match saw Josh Oakley of Devoy matched up against Ed Dromgool. It was a nailbiting and high intensity start. Both players had opportunities with game balls but it was eventually Oakley who took the first game 15/13 with an emotional fist pump. Desperately wanting the title, Oakley was all class in a match full of hard hitting, quick movement, stellar pickups and plenty of dives. Both players put everything out there with Oakley winning the match 3/1. Next up was Josh Larkin for Devoy taking on Peter Creed (Wales) ranked #60 in the world for Herne Bay. Creed took the game lead 2/0 and looked set to take the match but Larkin threw everything on the line for his team. With some amazing retrieval and shot play, Larkin came back and claimed a thrilling match 3/2 which sent the Devoy supporters into a frenzy. Ben Grindrod took the court against Herne Bay’s George Crosby who was looking to keep the Herne Bay team in the title hunt. In another exceptional display, Devoy’s Ben Grindrod cleaned up Crosby 3/0 to clinch the title for the Devoy team and make history. “This means a lot to the team and also our club Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre. This is one to celebrate!” said John. This is great achievement for the club who have a busy calendar ahead this year hosting the World Junior Squash Championships (July) and the NZ Doubles Championships (September). While there were no Bay of Plenty teams entered in the women's event, two Bay player lined up for their adopted club Thorndon from Wellington. In a topsy-turvy competition, Thorndon made their way to the finals where Abby Wotten and Jo Shanks managed to secure important victories to take the title 3/1 in the final. it was the first Mitchell Cup title for long-time Bay player Jo Shanks after many attempts.

SUPERCHAMPS NATIONAL FINALS 21-24 September Two BOP clubs have taken out the honours at the Superchamps finals! BOP had an impressive 15 teams travel all around the country to compete in the national superchamps finals over the weekend. The finals are a culmination of months of training as well as plenty of fundraising for the teams, with the elusive goal of becoming a national champions as the ultimate goal. This year two teams won their event to be crowned national champions. Katikati has had a long proud history at Superchamps with the small club often punching above their weight in various grades. Not only did they win their third title this year, but it was the hotly contested B grade men's division, and remarkably they did it from 7th seeds. They claimed the third B Men's title in the past 6 years for the Bay. The second title for the BOP was taken out by the young team of F/J men from the Mount. The sixth Superchamps title for the Mount, and their first since 2000 shows the rising talent the club has developed through it's exceptional junior program run by team coach Karen Roberts. The Bay also had three teams finish runner-up in their grade. Te Puke F/J Men, Taupo D Men, and Taneatua C Ladies all got runner-up banners.

To the Readers of the Annual Report of Squash Bay of Plenty Incorporated.

I have reviewed the financial statements of Squash Bay of Plenty Incorporated for the year ended 30 September 2017.

The review is limited primarily to enquiries of the Societies personnel and analytical review procedures applied to financial data and thus provides less assurance than an audit. I have not performed an audit and accordingly, I do not express and audit opinion

Based on my review nothing has come to my attention that causes me to believe that the accompanying financial statements do not give a true and fair view.
