2009 Men’s Soccer 1 SEASON OUTLOOK

Saint Joseph’s head coach Tom Turner enters his 23rd year with the Hawks. After winning five games for two consecutive sea- sons, the Hawks are optimistic and are looking to improve and make the playoffs this season. The Hawks’ biggest strength this season is their veteran group of returners who bring experience, determination and leadership to the team. With the upperclassmen and a strong freshmen class, the Hawks will be able to adhere together to make a solid winning team. On the attack, junior Colin Baker returns as the Hawks’ lead- ing scorer for two consecutive seasons. Baker was named to the Soccer Seven All-Star Team last season and was A-10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Joining Baker is another offensive contributor, junior Giacomo DiLisi. DiLisi had six points last year, while sopho- more Sean Canavan had two points and looks to make an impact in the forward line this season. The midfield returns senior Jason Lewis, along with juniors Brendan Duddy and Kevin Rhoades, who will hold together the center part of the game. Juniors D.J. Salmon and Alex Garst, along with sophomores Nico Galati and Rob Stephenson, will provide depth to the attack and midfield. Turner views the defensive line as one of the Hawks’ biggest strengths. “Our defensive line is one that brings toughness and leadership that will permeate to the core of the team,” said Turner. Giacomo Dilisi had six points last season (two goals, two assists).

Senior Travis Gast is the defensive leader as the main fullback and vocal leader on the team. Junior Rocco Pozzessere and soph- omore Tom Smart seal the defensive line as outside backs. Sophomores Greg Rom and Jake McPaul, along with junior Greg Dusing, will provide depth in the back line for the Hawks. Returning for his fourth consecutive year in net is senior goal- keeper Bryan Benedict. Last season Benedict made 82 saves for a 0.78 saving percentage with a 1.81 goals against average. Senior Joe Fluehr and sophomore Michael Troha, along with freshmen Andrew D’Ottavi and Mike Kruckemyer, will also compete for playing time in net. Newcomers Craig McDonald and Kevin Kirsch will look for time in the forward line, while Dan Zaykowski and Timmy Brennan will contend for a spot in the midfield. Freshmen Justin Kohler and Shane Kelly will fight for time as fullbacks. SJU will kick off their season in the Navy Soccer Classic, facing Navy and UMBC. The Hawks will also compete in the Stetson Soccer tournament in DeLand, Fla., going up against Stetson and Jacksonville (NCAA participant). The Atlantic 10 will be a challenge for the Hawks this year with strong contenders such as Saint Louis, Rhode Island, Charlotte, and UMass. “It will be a daunting challenge, but a chal- lenge that we are up for and ready to fight for a spot in the play- offs,” said Turner.

Colin Baker lead the team with six goals last season. The Hawk Will Never Die!

2 Saint Joseph’s University HEAD COACH Tom Turner Head Coach 23rd Season Tom Turner enters his 23nd year as Saint Joseph’s head men’s soccer coach in 2009. He is also mark- ing his 27th season of association with SJU soccer, including his four years as a player. Now one of the longest-tenured coaches at the University, Turner continues to lend a great deal of experience to the Hawk program. Additionally, he passed the legendary Jack Dunn’s record of 120 wins in the men’s soccer program with a 2-0 victory over Rider on October 4, 2008. He owns a 124-251-30 mark in 22 seasons. After being plagued by injuries in previous years, the Hawks made their presence felt in the Atlantic 10 the last two seasons, winning five games in each campaign. The Hawks have built a solid core of veteran defenders and with their leading scorer returning and a strong recruited class of freshman Turner looks to return to his winning ways. Turner took over the Saint Joseph’s soccer program in 1987, and his rebuilding plan led the Hawks to back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 1993 and 1994. That success was reminiscent of his playing days in the early 1970’s, when the Hawks made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 1993, Turner guided the Hawks to a school-record 12 wins, a first-ever Soccer Seven title, and an Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance. For his efforts, he was named the Coach of the Year in both the TURNER’S RÉSUMÉ Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Soccer Seven. He followed that with a 10-7-2 record in 1994, Head Coach Years marking the first consecutive double-digit win Saint Joseph’s 1987-present • Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (1993) campaigns in the program’s history. (From left to right) Turner, Gesing, and McInaw. THE HAWK One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 53 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball The Hawk Will Never Die! Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

4 Saint Joseph’s University FINNESEY FIELD

Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University as it enters its 80th year. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thou- sand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade hap- pened in the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of- the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track will received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the field has seen other modifications done to it since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. 2009 Men’s Soccer 11 2008 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team wrapped up its 2008 campaign with a 5-8-2 overall record and finished the Atlantic 10 season at 2-6-1. SJU was 1-0-1 in Philadelphia Soccer Seven com- petition, which gave the Hawks a share of the title with Penn for the first time since 1993. Head coach Tom Turner, in his 22nd year leading the squad, became the all-time wins leader in SJU history when the Hawks defeated Rider on October 4. Turner surpassed Jack Dunn’s record of 121 wins that day, finishing with 124 after a 1-0 victory over La Salle. Bryan Benedict led the Hawks in net with three shutouts in 14 starts. He posted five wins on the season, matching his personal best from the previous year. Benedict concluded his career on Hawk Hill with a 2.19 goals against average, which puts him eighth all-time in school history. With nine career shutouts, Benedict is tied for fifth in the program and his 251 career saves places him in fifth. On the offensive end, Saint Joseph’s was led by two-time Philadelphia Soccer Seven Player of the Week Colin Baker. Baker, a sophomore, led the team with six goals, four of which came in Conference play. He tallied two game-winners in successive week- ends in games against Xavier and La Salle.
