After winning five games for two consecutive sea- sons, the Hawks are optimistic and are looking to improve and make the playoffs this season. The Hawks’ biggest strength this season is their veteran group of returners who bring experience, determination and leadership to the team. With the upperclassmen and a strong freshmen class, the Hawks will be able to adhere together to make a solid winning team. On the attack, junior Colin Baker returns as the Hawks’ lead- ing scorer for two consecutive seasons. Baker was named to the Soccer Seven All-Star Team last season and was A-10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Joining Baker is another offensive contributor, junior Giacomo DiLisi. DiLisi had six points last year, while sopho- more Sean Canavan had two points and looks to make an impact in the forward line this season. The midfield returns senior Jason Lewis, along with juniors Brendan Duddy and Kevin Rhoades, who will hold together the center part of the game. Juniors D.J. Salmon and Alex Garst, along with sophomores Nico Galati and Rob Stephenson, will provide depth to the attack and midfield. Turner views the defensive line as one of the Hawks’ biggest strengths. “Our defensive line is one that brings toughness and leadership that will permeate to the core of the team,” said Turner. Giacomo Dilisi had six points last season (two goals, two assists). Senior Travis Gast is the defensive leader as the main fullback and vocal leader on the team. Junior Rocco Pozzessere and soph- omore Tom Smart seal the defensive line as outside backs. Sophomores Greg Rom and Jake McPaul, along with junior Greg Dusing, will provide depth in the back line for the Hawks. Returning for his fourth consecutive year in net is senior goal- keeper Bryan Benedict. Last season Benedict made 82 saves for a 0.78 saving percentage with a 1.81 goals against average. Senior Joe Fluehr and sophomore Michael Troha, along with freshmen Andrew D’Ottavi and Mike Kruckemyer, will also compete for playing time in net. Newcomers Craig McDonald and Kevin Kirsch will look for time in the forward line, while Dan Zaykowski and Timmy Brennan will contend for a spot in the midfield. Freshmen Justin Kohler and Shane Kelly will fight for time as fullbacks. SJU will kick off their season in the Navy Soccer Classic, facing Navy and UMBC. The Hawks will also compete in the Stetson Soccer tournament in DeLand, Fla., going up against Stetson and Jacksonville (NCAA participant). The Atlantic 10 will be a challenge for the Hawks this year with strong contenders such as Saint Louis, Rhode Island, Charlotte, and UMass. “It will be a daunting challenge, but a chal- lenge that we are up for and ready to fight for a spot in the play- offs,” said Turner. Colin Baker lead the team with six goals last season. The Hawk Will Never Die! 2 Saint Joseph’s University HEAD COACH Tom Turner Head Coach 23rd Season Tom Turner enters his 23nd year as Saint Joseph’s head men’s soccer coach in 2009. He is also mark- ing his 27th season of association with SJU soccer, including his four years as a player. Now one of the longest-tenured coaches at the University, Turner continues to lend a great deal of experience to the Hawk program. Additionally, he passed the legendary Jack Dunn’s record of 120 wins in the men’s soccer program with a 2-0 victory over Rider on October 4, 2008. He owns a 124-251-30 mark in 22 seasons. After being plagued by injuries in previous years, the Hawks made their presence felt in the Atlantic 10 the last two seasons, winning five games in each campaign. The Hawks have built a solid core of veteran defenders and with their leading scorer returning and a strong recruited class of freshman Turner looks to return to his winning ways. Turner took over the Saint Joseph’s soccer program in 1987, and his rebuilding plan led the Hawks to back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 1993 and 1994. That success was reminiscent of his playing days in the early 1970’s, when the Hawks made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 1993, Turner guided the Hawks to a school-record 12 wins, a first-ever Soccer Seven title, and an Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance. For his efforts, he was named the Coach of the Year in both the TURNER’S RÉSUMÉ Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Soccer Seven. He followed that with a 10-7-2 record in 1994, Head Coach Years marking the first consecutive double-digit win Saint Joseph’s 1987-present • Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (1993) campaigns in the program’s history. After a span of six seasons in which the Player Years Saint Joseph’s 1970-73 team totaled 23 wins, Turner got the Hawks back on track with 26 victories in the next three sea- sons. That stretch included a 10-7-2 record in TURNER’S RECORD 2001, in which he earned his second Soccer YEAR-BY-YEAR Seven Coach of the Year Award. PREVIEW ISSUE FOUR – 24TH APRIL 2012 MADRID CLOSE IN REAL TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE EL CLASICO AND CLOSE IN ON THE SILVERWARE After a poor week for both sides in Europe, Real and Barca were desperate to grab a win against their biggest rivals on a dramatic, rain-lashed Saturday night at the Nou Camp. It was Real that grabbed the vital win and probably clinched the La Liga title. Los Merengues went ahead through German midfielders Sami Khedira and were comfortable for long periods, but Barca’s Chilean substitute Alexis Sánchez equalised with just 20 minutes remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo’s clinical strike just three minutes later settled the game with Madrid now seven points clear, with only four games remaining. Madrid coach José Mourinho named an very attacking team and his side began the better. Ronaldo’s early header from a corner brought a superb flying save from goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. His opposite number Iker Casillas was then quickly off his line when full-back Dani Alves dispossessed Sergio Ramos. The game was being played at a fearsome pace and French striker Karim Benzema brought the best out of Valdés again. Barca thought they had gone front when Alves had the ball in the net after a Cristian Tello run, but the youngster had been flagged offside. INSIDE THIS WEEK’S WFW Real’s brave start was rewarded when Pepe’s header from another corner was half- - RESULTS ROUND-UP ON ALL MAJOR stopped by Valdes and Khedira tackled an COMPETITIONS FROM AROUND THE hesitant Carles Puyol to push the ball into the WORLD net to put Madrid ahead.
