Dear Readers

Welcome to the February edition of Up the Wreake.

As many of you know, I have taken over the role as Editor from Malcolm Britton who kindly donated his time to the magazine for an amazing 150 editions. I only hope I can follow in his footsteps to bring you a great magazine as he has the done for last 10 years!

As a resident of Hoby for a number of I years, realise how fortunate we are in having so many people willing to contribute their time and effort for the benefit of us . all There are so many events happening, fundraising, local history meetings, coffee mornings, primary school news, police updates... The list goes on!

As a subscriber to the magazine, I really do look forward to it landing on my doormat. My diary comes out and the various events go in!

When I heard that the magazine might cease that I realised how much of a loss it would be to our community and felt compelled o t do something. Therefore, along with the support of the contributors, advertisers and distributors, I am delighted to say that the magazine will continue during 2017.

This is your magazine and maybe you would like to share ‘your’ story with the community. It may be a place you have visited, an event you are organising, your memories of growing up in your village.... Please pass on any good suggestions, stories and photographs that you may have for any future editions of Up the Wreake.

Antonia Doyle

OBITUARIES Mr Colin Dawson Colin grew up in Frisby as the son of Jim and Connie Dawson of Moss Deeping Farm and during that time he developed an enduring love of the countryside and nature. After attending school in Frisby and Melton, Colin joined the Merchant Navy at 15 and saw the world including Australia. After his father suffered a stroke, Colin came home to help to run the family farm. He also helped out with lambing on local farms, worked for Stan

Green and for an agency. Eventually he changed to the construction and industry worked for Sherriffs, Rich Tate as well as doing agency work.

He met Sue at Baileys in and they were married in Ashbourne and started their married life together in Eye Kettleby. A number of house moves in Asfordby and Melton followed with the addition to the family of Katie and Lucy.

In 2012 Colin and Sue moved to Camelford in Cornwall where they received a very warm welcome, and set up a bed and breakfast business. Unfortunately, with the onset of Colin’s illness, their stay in Cornwall was curtailed and they returned to to be closer to the family. Colin’s own interests included -‐ gardening he was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, grew peaches in his greenhouse in Melton and restored an allotment which ld had gone wi and became very productive under his care.

He loved renovating houses. Every house move became a welcome challenge to his various skills and he could turn his hand to anything. Although he was very happy at home, he always enjoyed holidays whether it was in Cornwall or abroad, visiting Dubai, Portugal and St Lucia. Classical music concerts as well as appreciating Elton John, The Who, Phil Collins and the Beatles indicate his broad range of his musical tastes.

Mrs Joan Stubbs Hoby has lost a much loved resident, by the death of Mrs Joan Stubbs, at the age of 93 on Christmas Day. Joan was born at Sunnybank Cottage, one of the 4 girls and 2 boys of Frank and Iva Gatward on rd 3 July 1923. Apart from a year or two when the family lived on a farm at Six Hills, Joan spent her whole life in close proximity to where she was finally taken ill before she passed away on Christmas Day. She left school when she was 14 years old and worked as a milliner and dressmaker at Lamberts in Leicester. We also know that she had her first holiday when she was 17 years old when she went to stay with Mrs Daniels in Norwich for a week. Mrs Daniels was lodging at Sunnybank whilst her husband was convalescing at Hall. 8 6

In the early years of the war Joan was involved in the highly skilled occupation of producing lenses for Rank Taylor Hobson in Leicester and then volunteered to work in a munitions factory which, because of safety considerations, was transferred out of the city to the Ordnance Depot at Old Dalby. Joan continued to work in the stores at Old Dalby after the war and stayed there until her retirement. It was there that she met Alf Stubbs who lived in Stathern. They were married in All Saints Church, Hoby on 14th January 1972 and made their home at Sunnybank. Whatever was going on Joan liked to be involved. For all her life, Joan entered the Horticultural Show sed and speciali in the cookery section winning many prizes. Other activities included helping to run the groceries stall at village fetes and attending the Centre Stage and Centre Screen performances in the Village Hall. Joan supported the whist drives in Frisby and lsewhere, e loved playing bingo and watching travel programmes, Strictly, University Challenge and other quiz programmes on TV. She never missed a snooker competition. As well as the pleasure she took in her garden, travel was an important part of Joan’s fe. li She and Alf travelled widely in their camper van especially after they retired. In addition, she had also been to Spain, South Africa, Canada, Lanzarote and had travelled on Concorde to the USA. Game for anything, Joan enjoyed many happy friends. days out with A very sociable person, Joan enjoyed meals at the Blue Bell with friends and attending the monthly lunches in the wider church group. She was a regular attendee at the Kirby Bellars Harvest lunch.

Joan was a great friend of Hoby Church and was a regular worshipper. She also attended evensong at Ratcliffe church and the monthly evening services at the Methodist Centre in Hoby and never missed the Remembrance Service at Brooksby. In recent years, even into her nineties, she could be seen making her way each morning and evening to open close the church. Every morning she would check to see if all was in order and light a candle on the prayer stand.

Everyone was so pleased to see ervice her at the carol s on the Sunday before Christmas. She enjoyed a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie after the service and having a chat with all her village friends. One week later on Christmas Day, Joan, a true Christian soul, was called home to her Maker.

Joan was, in some ways, an unobtrusive person who never pushed herself forward and would often blush mightily if she was highlighted. She would have been surprised and embarrassed by the many warm tributes paid to her. Joan will remain in our memories as a lady, a gentle and honest Christian soul, a very sociable person who loved to be in the company of others: outgoing, always cheerful, with a bubbly sense of humour and the gift to make lasting friendships. She will be sadly missed but remembered with joy and h wit great affection. Extracts gathered from various sources for the celebration of Joan’s life held in All Saints Church, th Hoby on 17 January 2017.

"Introducing ...”

As 2016 ended, I celebrated my HHGTTG birthday -‐ 42! I will arrive in Frisby & the Upper Wreake with my Vicky, wife, and daughters Eve (10), Carys (8) & Rose (5). All three girls will be a year older by the time we celebrate Easter. Rather than introduce them all, I'll let you get to know them, their gifts & graces, as we live . among you

10 8

Both Vicky and I grew up in Cheam, near Epsom, Surrey. Primary & secondary schools were close by, with university seeing us both end up at Oxford (Vicky at the classier establishment -‐ Brookes!). Vicky's degree was in fine art, followed by a nham. PGCE in Chelte My St.Peter's College degree was in Philosophy, Politics & Economics, -‐ but time out after uni resulted in me working for a Surrey church. That role of Pastoral Assistant included two days of bible-‐training near London Bridge.

My time at St.Paul's, Howell Hill took me in the direction of ordination, where I trained for three years at Oak Hill, North London. A curacy opened up in Weymouth -‐ (2003 06), leading onto a post of "First Responsibility" as I became a Vicar in The Melbury Team ry Ministry, Salisbu (2007-‐17). Ten years of frustration & fruition; hard-‐work & hallelujahs; grit & growth. Aka 'the Christian life'! Here are 5 things that matter to me as a Christian and priest :

1) Heritage – Anglo-‐catholic upbringing; Franciscan youth-‐camps; evangelical training; charismatic influences; mindfulness classes. I love rural life as it involves aspects of each! “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but makes only God, who things grow.” (1st Corinthians, ch.3)

2) Hinterland – fascinated by the rich tapestry that exists in the countryside; incredible communities & characters; the old & the new; living close to the earth. I'm on the 'Germinate Leadership Course', which helps Christian presences to be more effective in engaging with their communities. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis, ch.1)

3) Humility – attracted by the invitation to live & believe as 'children'; vulnerable, dependable, humble. I worry that 'growing up' can inhibit such wonder & honesty and the -‐ world of story telling. ”And Jesus took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark, ch.10)

4) Harmony – intrigued by the joy there is in being different, and the tensions; how the Spirit of holiness changes us. I value input from 'Bridge Builders', who support Christian people in the challenging task of living as models of reconciliation. “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out 11 9 their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.” (Matthew, ch.18)

5) Health – critical illness in 2013 led -‐ to a year off work; the recovery has been slow but sure. I have to take care to manage my energy, but this makes me more aware of God's priorities! “To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.” (Colossians, ch.1) I could – go on drama; partnership; hospitality; prayer; fun! For now, I focus on Jesus' words; “Our Father … thy kingdom come”. I look forward to telling the story of God's love with you in the Upper Wreake. And to seeing our village churches becoming places of blessing; people blessing. In Brooksby, Frisby, Hoby, Kirby, Ragdale . Be that in a historic building or inside the school; around the kitchen table or over a pint; poring over the Bible or discussing the news; on the Asfordby touch-‐ line or jogging along the lanes; by listening & learning or speaking & debating or present & silent. Until -‐ we meet face to-‐face, His and yours, Rev'd David Harknett

On 3rd January 2010 we ringed a male blackbird, originally born in 2009, in our garden. We subsequently recaptured this blackbird on 13th February 2010 in our garden. In 2011 we received a report from the British Trust for Ornithology that this same blackbird had been captured by a licensed ringer in Latvia on th 27 March 2011.

On th 30 January 2011 we captured a male blackbird in our garden which was already wearing a ring. This blackbird had been ringed 5 years previous on 25 October 2005 The in Netherlands.

AWESOME, I hear you say!! It is the fitting of rings to birds which provides us with an insight into – their lives a real privilege.

If you do happen to find dead, a bird, alive or which is wearing a metal ring please take a note of the ring number and send finding details (dead or alive, date, place where found) to the address inscribed on the ring. You will receive a report on the ringing history of tes the bird and this contribu to the overall statistics on survival for the species concerned. Garry and Candice Barker

All Saints’ Hoby Carol Service -‐ Retiring collection. This years retiring collection at the Carol Service at Hoby Parish Church was for ‘One Roof Leicester’. The amount One sent to Roof Leicester was £131.38 which will go towards the charities work of continuing to support the homeless of Leicester.

Hoby DCC would also like to thank everyone who came to the service, and particularly to those who took part in the service by reading the lessons. We also thank all those who beautifully decorated the church again this year and to those who provided refreshments after the service. Maureen and Vic.

Brooksby Church Christmas Quiz Thank you to everyone who bought a quiz sheet £170 enabling us to raise for Brooksby Church Funds. There were no all correct answers but, Audrey Gatward and Tony Geary each scored 47 out of 50. As there were only two people tied, rather than ballot we have sent them £10 each with our congratulations. For the benefit of all who took part the answers are shown after this article. SHOOSHOO BABY’S CHRISTMAS PARTY LIGHTS UP HOBY’S FESTIVE SEASON Hoby was facing the prospect of a somewhat bleaker Christmas than usual, without the traditional ‘Christmas Delights’ in the Village Hall. But a fortuitous approach from ShooShoo Baby – who have delighted us in the past – was taken up by the Church as a -‐ suitably festive fund raising event.

This sparkling Christmas show, starring the lyrical and glamorous duo – this time with an equally glamorous accompanist – attracted an audience th of 100 on 4th December. They provided a delightful blend of variations on traditional Christmas themes and quirky original numbers, incorporating a good deal of audience participation – with varying degrees of enthusiasm or reluctance. The audience adored them, and with contributions from the raffle, bar and refreshments, the event made £702 a total of towards the Hoby Church refurbishment . projects.

Frisby CE Primary School Cross Country

Frisby got off to an excellent start in the cross country season by finishing 1st overall in the small schools category in the Leicestershire Primary School league. Frisby not only finished 1st but had some excellent results from the 40 runners who took part in all of the three races from October to November, in the team events.

The Year 3 girls, in their first season, finished 2nd overall, the Year 5 girls took second place , with one of the girls finishing 4th overall, the Year 5 boys topped the table finishing 1st.

The best performance from the coaches point of girls view was the Year 6 in their final season of racing th managing a 4 consecutive 1st place position, meaning that they have won the small schools category every year they have entered, an outstanding performance which we hope will see them continue running at secondary school level.

The team now looks forward to taking part in the Melton and Belvoir Area Championships at the end of February.
