Back in 1946 Albert and Sheila managed to get the tenancy of Glebe Farm, Hoby. The farm, particularly the house was very run down. In the home, Sheila prepared the most delicious food in very difficult circumstances – her pastry making skills are renowned. She had the patience to teach all the children to cook even in the chaos of the farm kitchen, Along with the hard work in doors, Sheila had to muck in at busy times tractor driving, looking after the drier at harvest and helping with all the other tasks that a mixed farm had in those days. It was a tough life building up the farm and everything was concentrated on that; but the Riley’s also found time to play hard. Bill Woods died peacefully on December 13th at Peterborough City Hospital. Born in Hoby, Leicestershire, Bill was the eldest son of Minnie and Percy Woods and brother to Derick and the late Ron Woods. When he was just a small child, the family moved to Bourne and shortly afterwards to Market Deeping, where Bill attended the Green School. After leaving school at the age of 14 he started work as a bakers roundsman at Fowlers of Market Deeping, where deliveries were by horse and cart and involved an early start as the horses had to be caught and harnessed. From the bakery in Deeping, Bill moved to the Co-op Bakery in Peterborough where deliveries were by van. In later years, he got a job at Pattinsons builders merchants, where he taught himself to drive the firms fork trucks and for the rest of his full time working career, he followed this occupation, next with Fiat Allis at Essendine and finally until his retirement at Blackstone’s in Stamford. After retirement, Bill had two part-time jobs, first serving petrol at Langtoft Garage and then until the age of 83, working in the Langtoft shop where he really enjoyed all the back chat with customers, who he got to know so well. Bill loved dancing and it was through Saturday night that he met Vilma. They became engaged in August 1956 and were married in Baston Church in the midst of a snow storm on February 23rd 1957 that lasted almost 63 years. After two years living in Northborough, they returned to Baston where he spent the rest of his life. Bill was a great sportsman and as a young man, he played cricket for Market Deeping Cricket Club. He also played tennis and badminton and was a Judo enthusiast, earning three Judo belts. In later years, he enjoyed playing snooker. He had a love of birds, animals and nature, although gardening was the exception. One of his greatest enjoyments was to spend time in Norfolk, especially around Broadland, his favourite part of the country. In the many cards and condolences his family received, a constant theme ran through them, referring to Bill as a gentle easy going man, who made many friends and greeted everyone with a smile. He never let anything worry him and his favourite saying was “Don’t make more of it than what it is”. His funeral, a celebration of his life, was held at South Lincolnshire Crematorium on January 13th.

Family mourners were:

Vilma Woods (wife)

Derick Woods and Jackie, Trevor and Jane Maltby, David and Janet Jackson, Ruth Maltby, Paul and Angela Maltby, Andrew and Denise Woods, Stephen and Angie Woods

Help still required with Blackbird monitoring You may remember in a magazine article we wrote approximately 2 years ago we mentioned the Blackbird colour ringing project in Hoby and Rearsby we started in 2017. Well since the start of the project we have now fitted blue colour rings, with a 3 white lettered combination inscribed on the ring, to over 160 blackbirds. The aims of the project are essentially:  To find out the where the over wintering blackbirds in our Parish spend their summers.  To discover how far fledged blackbirds, move the following year, should they survive that long.  To map out the breeding territories of blackbirds in our Parish. Well, we still really need your help with achieving all of these aims. You can really help by keeping your binoculars handy at the window looking out onto your garden to help read the 3 lettered code on the blackbird’s leg, should you see one. If you have a blackbird wearing a colour ring resident in your (or your neighbour’s) garden and if you are able to read the lettered combination on the ring, then that would be great. If you think you have a coloured ringed blackbird but are unable to read the combination we could come along with binoculars and help to read the colour ring. If you live in Hoby and think you have a blackbird nesting in your garden we would like to monitor the nest and, if the chicks survive, fit colour rings around their legs before they fledge. So please let us know. This scientific data is very valuable because from year to year we will be able to monitor fluctuations in breeding pairs (population), brood size and survival. We will again, be out and about surveying the colour ringed blackbirds ourselves this Spring/Summer. So, if you see us looking through binoculars at trees/bushes and up at rooftops within the Parish and surrounding countryside you will know what we are up to! Please feel free to stop us and find out which of the colour ringed blackbirds we have found. In our 2018 article we mentioned we thought we had blackbird ADP setting up territory in Chapel Lane. Well he was and you may like to know he is still in the neighbourhood two years later! Please report any nests or colour ring code sightings to us, with a location, time and date

via email: [email protected] 13 We will acknowledge receipt as soon as we are able. We will also keep you informed of any other re-sightings of your blackbirds we receive from other Parishioners or the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology, https://www.bto.org/). 13

Can I remind readers that the Hoby Internet Café (The Greasy Spoon) is open on Monday and Thursday mornings at the Hoby Methodist Chapel, from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. We have laptops available and an iPad and can give basic instructions on their use to non

technical people. If you have your own equipment and want some help bring it along,

we’ll get you started. The café is open to everyone who lives in the area and a small charge of £2 is made to cover costs of your tea/coffee and biscuits. If you just want

to pop in and have a natter, you are most welcome. Terry Fleming 01664 434442

I would like to thank everyone for the many cards, flowers and good wishes sent to me on my recent illness. I am now well on the way to recovery, have my very own defibrillator fitted and am looking forward to the next twenty years in the beautiful Wreake Valley. I feel very lucky to have such wonderfully kind and generous people around me and just want you to know how much I appreciate your friendship. Terry Fleming

Leicestershire and Rutland Gardens Trust is working on a research project to create a Register of Walled Kitchen Gardens in the two counties. Now, often derelict or put to other uses, these gardens are recognised as forming an important part of our social and garden history. Sue Blaxland is a committee member of Leicestershire & Rutland Gardens Trust and leads the Trust's project on walled kitchen gardens. She taught garden design and garden history in adult education, including at Brooksby College. During her years with the Gardens Trust, she has gained extensive experience in garden history research. All are welcome; the price for non members is £2.00 (pay on door).
