Match Day Program Welcome Presidents Message Match Day Program On behalf of the Adelaide Comets Football Club I would like to welcome everyone to today’s games against MetroStars at Saturday 21st May 2016 (Round 12) the SA Athletics Stadium for Round 12. Today’s senior game will be a tough battle I have no doubt as every week is a big SA Athletics Stadium 3:00pm challenge. This will be the start of the 2nd round fixtures v MetroStars who in Round 1 were unlucky to not take the 3 points after leading for most of the game. Although we still have injuries the test will be on the depth of our players and an opportunity for some young talent to have their opportunity. I would like to wish senior coach Theo Tsiounis and his support staff and all our players the very best for today’s game. The team has had one of its best starts to a season and it is important to treat every game of utmost importance. We look forward to a great game of football. I would like to wish our Under 18 coach Tony Galanopoulos and Reserve coach John Falidis and their teams the very best in today’s clashes after both teams did very well last week. With the support of our Committees, Sponsors and members we are proud to deliver a professional venue in SA Athletics Stadium for all Senior League teams and I would like all our Sponsors and supporters to enjoy our facilities and vocally encourage and support our players today. A special thank you to all our helpers who have worked so hard to make today’s games possible. The food and drinks will be supplied by Athletics SA through the canteen and Adelaide Comets FC will run the bar upstairs in the Function Room. If you would like to purchase tickets to our Quiz Night on June 25 please go to our web- site www.adelaidecomets.com.au for more information. I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable day and look forward to seeing you in the function room after the game for presentations and nibbles. A total of 737 clubs entered the FFA Cup 2019, a number that has significantly grown from the first edition of the FFA Cup in 2014, when 617 clubs entered. The FFA Cup 2019 started in February with the Preliminary Rounds to determine the 21 clubs from the semi-professional and amateur tiers. These clubs joined ten of the Hyundai A-League clubs (Western United FC will not participate in this edition) and the reigning National Premier Leagues Champions (Campbelltown City SC) in the Final Rounds. The FFA Cup Final 2019 will be played on Wednesday 23 October with the host city to be determined by a live draw. Each cup tie must be decided on the day, with extra time to decide results of matches drawn after 90 minutes, followed by penalties if required. At least one Member Federation club is guaranteed to progress to the Semi Finals. Previous winners of the FFA Cup are Adelaide United (2014 and 2018), Melbourne Victory (2015), Melbourne City FC (2016) and Sydney FC (2017). Broadcast partners – FOX SPORTS FOX SPORTS will again provide comprehensive coverage of the FFA Cup 2019 Final Rounds. The FFA Cup’s official broadcaster will show one LIVE match per match night from the Round of 32 onwards, while providing coverage and updates, as well as live streams, of non-broadcast matches.

Football (Soccer): Football Federation Australia “I’d argue with kids at school and they all were convinced that rugby league was the most popular world sport. That shows how isolated Australia was. Soccer had to be introduced by migrants. We’ve come a long way.”1 Brazilian Ambassador once wondered whether Australians had a linguistic or an anatomical problem, since they seemed to reserve the term ‘football’ for games in Awhich the players predominantly use their hands.2 Such is the seeming contradiction in Australia where the term for the game played with the feet is called soccer and football (which is rugby league, rugby union or Aussie rules depending on where you live) is played mostly with the hands. Football is no longer the poor cousin of the ‘big four’ national sports in Australia – cricket, rugby league, Australian rules football and rugby union. Following the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the game has finally come of age in Australia and is starting to seriously challenge the other sports for spectator, sponsor and media support. Tracing football’s roots Playing a ball game using the feet has been happening for thousands of years. Early history reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees, which are related to the modern game of football. The earliest form of the game for which there is reliable evidence dates back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. in China. Another form of the game, also originating in the Far East, was the Japanese Kemari, which dates from about 500 to 600 years later and is still played today.3 However, it is almost certain that the development of the modern game took place in England and Scotland.
