A New and of Mogoplistidae (, ) from the Ryukyus

Tsukan6 YAMASAKI

Synopsis

YAMAsAKI, T. 1985 A new genus and speeies of Mogoplistidae

Most mogoplistid crickets dwell on foliage of bushes and small trees. However, sorne mogoplistids are terrestrial and prefer to live in leaf litter, e.g. American CycloptiZz{m and Australian Marimza, Biama and Kalyra (LovE and WALKER, 1979; OTTE and ALExANDER, 1983). Of these, several species have strong preference to eoastal habitats (LovE and WALKER, op. ci,t.). A new rnogoplistid species from the Island of Iriomote-jima of the Yaeyama group in the Ryukyu Islands, which will be deseribed in the present paper, also has such peeuliar habit. This new speeies is similar to the Australian Kiah in having entirely blaek exposed fore wings. However, the former slightly differs from the latter in relative size of body paTts. Further, Kiah oceurs in grassy, slightly wooded plains (OTTE and ALExANDER, op. eit.). For the present, therefore, I take the step of deseribing the new species under a new genus. All the type specimens here designated are deposited in the Na- tional Science Museum (Nat. Hist.), Tokyo. Before going further, I wish to express my sincere thanks to Mr. M. ToMoKuNI for his kind aid in the field survev. v

the least in the ratios of the 5th segment length to its width in maxillary palp and of pronotal length to exposed fore wing length in male. Male reeognized on the following characteristics: Body length, 4.9-6.6 mm. Ratio of 5th segment Iength to its width in maxillary palp, ea, 2.5. Ratio of pronotal length to exposed fore wing length, 4.75-9.50. Head and pronotum with striped or complieated pattern by white seales. Fore wings short, entirely blaek in exposed pertions; mirror concealed ,beneath the pronotum in anterior half. Legs short ; fore tibiae with a small internal tympanum; hind femora blackish, but inner basal

halves whitish and dorsal!y with whitish spots bearing a bristle. Abdominal segments grey, dorsally with 4 blackish spots in each segment except for the last white segment. Cerci banded, mostly black; bases and apices white. Genital processes pale brown. Inhabitant in leaf litter on the ground in coastal forests. Range. Known so far only from the Island of Iriomote-jima, the Ryukyu Islands. "Tubarama" Etymology. is a kind of lyrical ballad of short verse type sung by people in the Yaeyama group of the Ryukyu Islands, though "tubara" the word originally means a young man in the Yaeyama dialect "-ma" and is suthxed to the attribution of diminuitive loveliness (KisHABA, 1924). On the other hand, the mogoplistid belonging to the genus is small in body size and the male singsa lovely short song. There- fore, Tzebara・ma is the well suited name to the member of the new genus.
