PREFACE This bibliography of Klamath Mountains geology was begun, although not in a systematic or comprehensive way, when, in 1953, I was assigned the task of preparing a report on the geology and mineral resources of the drainage basins of the Trinity, Klamath, and Eel Rivers in northwestern California. During the following 40 or more years, I maintained an active interest in the Klamath Mountains region and continued to collect bibliographic references to the various reports and maps of Klamath geology that came to my attention. When I retired in 1989 and became a Geologist Emeritus with the Geological Survey, I had a large amount of bibliographic material in my files. Believing that a comprehensive bibliography of a region is a valuable research tool, I have expended substantial effort to make this bibliography of the Klamath Mountains as complete as is reasonably feasible. My aim was to include all published reports and maps that pertain primarily to the Klamath Mountains, as well as all pertinent doctoral and master's theses. -

YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO SURVEYS IN THE SOUTH FORK KERN RIVER VALLEY IN 2009 Final Report Prepared for: U.S Fish and Wildlife Service Sacramento Office Prepared by: Carlene Henneman Southern Sierra Research Station P.O. Box 1316 Weldon, CA 93283 Submitted: 18 February 2010 Executive Summary __________________________________________________________________________________________ In 2009, we conducted comprehensive surveys for Yellow-billed Cuckoos in riparian habitat along the South Fork of the Kern River in the Kern River Valley, CA. We had a total of 69 detections, across four survey periods during the Yellow-billed Cuckoo breeding season (mid- June to mid-August). The majority of our detections (58 of the 69) were on the South Fork Wildlife Area, which is located at the west end of the South Fork Kern River where it enters Lake Isabella. We had 11 detections at the Kern River Preserve and no detections at the Canebrake Ecological Reserve. The South Fork Kern River Valley continues to be an important area for breeding Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Because local cuckoo populations fluctuate drastically from one year to the next, continued surveys are vital to understanding its use by Yellow-billed cuckoo populations. The SFKRV presents a unique opportunity to better understand the habitat characteristics that promote cuckoo occupancy within a relatively small geographic area. Lake Isabella water levels appear to influence local Yellow-billed Cuckoo distribution and numbers, but the exact mechanism (food, availability of nest sites, etc.) by which this occurs remains unclear. March 2008 Draft Vegetation Communities of San Diego County Introduction San Diego’s vegetation communities owe their diversity to the wide range of soil and climatic conditions found in the County. The County encompasses desert, mountainous and coastal conditions over a wide range of elevation, precipitation and temperature changes. These conditions provide niches for endemic species and a wide range of vegetation communities. San Diego County is home to over 200 plant and animal species that are federally listed as rare, endangered, or threatened. The preservation of this diversity of species and habitats is important for the health of ecosystem functions, and their economic and intrinsic values. In order to effectively classify the wide variety of vegetation communities found here, the framework developed by Robert Holland in 1986 has been added to and customized for San Diego County. To supplement the original Holland Code, additions were made by Thomas Oberbauer in 1996 to account for unique habitats found in San Diego and to account for artificial habitat features (i.e., 10,000 series). -
