World Renaissance: changing roles or people and place Lisbon, Portugal. 25-28 August 2015 3 Welcome to Lisbon Dear Colleagues elcome to Lisbon, city of Ulysses, from where you can look at Greece and Europe; with suffi cient distance to dream feasible futures; with enough involvement to Wcreate them; and with unavoidable proximity to enjoy and suffer from your deeds. We do not have many hours to potentiate those crucial moments in the end of August in the diversifi ed sessions of the Congress; so please participate full time in it: for this we have prepare the best plenary moments and arrange the sessions to potentiate fruitful interactions to understand and improve our places and our peoples. There is plenty of time after six to visit Lisbon. Lose and fi nd yourself in the fantastic labyrinths of the city center: walk down the hill of the Castel through Alfama, may be you can listen some good music in Clube do Fado; climb from Rossio to Chiado, drink a beer in Trindade and have dinner in Bairro Alto; pick up a tram in Terreiro do Paço and eat a “nata” in Belém after a dinner in the open. And do not forget to know the place of thecongress, it is in the valley west of the city center very close to the Portuguese Assembly. Please remember to talk about the theme of the Congress: “World Renaissance: Changing roles for people and places”. The same way the fi rst globalization changed the role for peoples and places, for sure the one that we are experienced will also bring structural changes in histories and geographies. What are the dreams and tragedies of the Homeros and Camões of today? That is what we would like you to share with each other. There is no better place to do it. And do not blame the food or the drink, the sun and the light. It is one of the bests in the world. Many thanks Tomaz Dentinho Chair of the Local Organizing Committee 2 55th ERSA Congress. World Renaissance: changing roles or people and place Lisbon, Portugal. 25-28 August 2015 3 4 55th ERSA Congress. World Renaissance: changing roles or people and place Lisbon, Portugal. 25-28 August 2015 5 Words from our ERSA President n behalf of the European Regional Science community, I am very delighted to welcome you all to our 55th European Congress on ‘World Renaissance: Changing roles for people and Oplaces’ in the global city of Lisbon. In this year’s conference programme I am honoured to say that we have delegates from 54 coun- tries around the world. We will have over 800 presentations scheduled for this years’ Congress in Lisbon, as from the 25-28th August 2015 creating a new energy of Regional Science. We have a special Friday session with the presence of the European Commissioner on Regional Policy - Corina Cretu and the Portuguese Minister for Regional Development - Miguel Poiares Maduro who will be delivering their speeches at the Portuguese Parliament. As for ERSA, we continue to partner our alliance with organisations and institutions in enhancing the academic expertise of our members, through the economic growth and social developments across Europe. Our inten- tion is to maintain and improve the high-level of our Congresses, Summer Schools, Workshops and other events, through fostering research excel- lence as well as supporting promising young scientists, to new dimensions in Regional Science. I am very pleased to announce that ERSA activities continue to grow with the support of our members and its Sections with the support of the REGION journal, the local activities of the Section’s conferences and workshops. And in this year, ERSA will be present along with other associations at the European Commission OPEN DAYS event in October. Especially, linked to the University part of the programme which “facilitates the creation of networking links between students, academics, EU institutions and regional partners and raises awareness, attracting students and young researchers to the topic of the EU cohesion policy”. (Source: EU Open Days homepage) I also would like to thank Tomaz PONCE DENTINHO, the chair of the LOC and his team for their two years dedication and passionate hard work of which we will enjoy in this historical city, over the next 4 days. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a fruitful participation! Welcome to Lisbon!
