Almost every parent I meet has the greatest of intentions and some of them think they know a lot about basketball development -- but when it comes down to it, they know VERY little about developing players efficiently and effectively. It's unfortunate that there are so many misconceptions about basketball development and improving their child's ability. In fact, youth basketball in this country has become surprisingly flawed and ineffective. This is why European countries have caught up with us when it comes to basketball. European countries are able to compete with us (and even beat us) with far less athletic players and fewer people to choose from. The truth is that they have a better youth and player development system than we do in the United States. They produce highly skilled players and we produce athletes (because we have a bigger population to choose from and better facilities). So what can we learn from this and what can you do as a parent to maximize your child's development and give them an edge over the competition? In this report I'm going to dispel the myths and share with you a much better way to develop basketball players. Basketball ability and development comes down the three key and equally important areas: 1. Athleticism 2. Basketball skill 3. Mentality Now this is vital -- you'll notice that I said all three areas are equally important!! This is one of the very common mistakes that I see. Parents, players, and coaches neglect one or more of these areas. To reach your potential, maximize performance, and make big improvements, all three areas must be addressed. It is very very rare that I see players effectively working on all three of those areas. And if they do work on all three, they don't do a very good job and/or understand each aspect. Let's talk about how we can improve and develop better players... __________________________________________________________________________________ © Copyright 2010 Breakthrough Basketball, LLC http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com Page | 4 Key #1 - Athleticism What does athleticism really mean? Why is it important? And can you really develop athleticism? Let's start by pointing out that I'm using the term "athleticism" loosely. I like to group a variety of related attributes into one group. I usually refer to that group as "athleticism" or "athletic development". Here's a quick summary of what I like to include into the athletic development category: • Strength (absolute, maximal, explosive, and speed) of the hands, core, legs, shoulders, and arms. • Agility • Foot speed and quickness (forward, backward, side to side, and diagonal) • Hand speed and quickness • Endurance • Jumping • Balance • Motor coordination - gross motor skills, fine motor skills, eye hand coordination, ambidexterity, accuracy/hand accuracy, spatial awareness, rhythm. • Reaction time / mental chronometry • Flexibility • Proprioception and kinesthesia • Form (running and movement technique) If you have played basketball or know anything about basketball, you will quickly realize that all these things are critically important to become a good basketball player. Huge books have been written about strength, agility, endurance and every aspect of athleticism. I don't pretend to understand all aspects of athletic development nor do I expect you to understand. I do, however, believe it's important for you to somewhat understand WHAT each category means and WHY they are important. Once you have a basic understanding you'll be able to use some of the simple techniques I'll give you to help your child develop athletically and even come up with your own ways to help your child improve. So let's jump in and briefly cover each aspect of athletic development and explain why they are important... Strength (Absolute, Maximal, Explosive, and Speed) of the Hands, Core, Legs, Shoulders, and Arms Strength in regards to sports is highly misunderstood and that's why I like to make a point of the "4 types of strength". Basketball players can use their strength in different ways. __________________________________________________________________________________ © Copyright 2010 Breakthrough Basketball, LLC http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com Page | 5 Absolute strength is the amount of force that one can exert under involuntary muscle stimulation. Most people will never undergo involuntary muscle stimulation, so you can ignore this and focus on the next three. Maximal strength is the amount of force that one can exert under voluntary effort. This strength quality is seen during a powerlifting competition. Each athlete tries to lift the greatest amount of weight. Examples of maximal strength training include heavy weight lifting, high-tension isometrics, and strenuous bodyweight movements (ex. one-arm chin-ups). In regards to basketball, positioning yourself in the post and powering up lay ups while getting fouled are examples of maximal strength on the basketball court. Explosive Strength is the ability to express significant tension in minimal time. Explosive strength is considered the strength quality most characteristic of athletic activities. Explosive strength is developed with fast, powerful muscle actions. Jumping as high as you can is an example of explosive strength. Speed Strength is the ability to quickly execute an unloaded movement or a movement against a relatively small external resistance. Making a crisp pass or shooting the basketball from long range are both examples of speed strength. In order to be a GREAT basketball player, you don't need to excel at all 4 types of strength. However you do need to excel (or at least be adequate) in a 2 or more of the areas. Let's take two NBA players to demonstrate why and how these types of strengths can affect your basketball performance... Shaquille O'Neal possesses superior maximal strength and good explosive strength too. This allows him to pass the ball at a high speed and long distance, establish position in the post, and power the ball up for easy baskets in the post. Shaq is a very big and powerful player that uses his "maximal strength" to dominate the competition. Kevin Durant is skinny and lacks raw power. He could barely bench press 120 lbs coming into the NBA. He is NOT strong when it comes to lifting weights and yet he is one of the best players in the league. The reason Kevin Durant is able to be an elite player is because he has explosive strength and speed strength. This allows

  • Basketball Teams As Strategic Networks
Basketball Teams as Strategic Networks Jennifer H. Fewell1,3*, Dieter Armbruster2,3, John Ingraham2, Alexander Petersen2, James S. Waters1 1 School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, United States of America, 2 School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, United States of America, 3 Center for Social Dynamics and Complexity, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, United States of America Abstract We asked how team dynamics can be captured in relation to function by considering games in the first round of the NBA 2010 play-offs as networks. Defining players as nodes and ball movements as links, we analyzed the network properties of degree centrality, clustering, entropy and flow centrality across teams and positions, to characterize the game from a network perspective and to determine whether we can assess differences in team offensive strategy by their network properties. The compiled network structure across teams reflected a fundamental attribute of basketball strategy. They primarily showed a centralized ball distribution pattern with the point guard in a leadership role. However, individual play- off teams showed variation in their relative involvement of other players/positions in ball distribution, reflected quantitatively by differences in clustering and degree centrality. We also characterized two potential alternate offensive strategies by associated variation in network structure: (1) whether teams consistently moved the ball towards their shooting specialists, measured as ‘‘uphill/downhill’’ flux, and (2) whether they distributed the ball in a way that reduced predictability, measured as team entropy. These network metrics quantified different aspects of team strategy, with no single metric wholly predictive of success.

Yancosek 2010 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION INJURY-INDUCED HAND DOMINANCE TRANSFER Hand dominance is the preferential use of one hand over the other for motor tasks. 90% of people are right-hand dominant, and the majority of injuries (acute and cumulative trauma) occur to the dominant limb, creating a double-impact injury whereby a person is left in a functional state of single-handedness and must rely on the less- dexterous, non-dominant hand. When loss of dominant hand function is permanent, a forced shift of dominance is termed injury-induced hand dominance transfer (I-IHDT).

1 Ranking the Greatest NBA Players: An Analytics Analysis An Honors Thesis by Jeremy Mertz Thesis Advisor Dr. Lawrence Judge Ball State University Muncie, Indiana July 2015 Expected Date of Graduation May 2015 1-' ,II L II/du, t,- i II/em' /.. 2 ?t; q ·7t./ 2 (11 S Ranking the Greatest NBA Players: An Analytics Analysis . Iv/If 7 Abstract The purpose of this investigation was to present a statistical model to help rank top National Basketball Association (NBA) players of all time. As the sport of basketball evolves, the debate on who is the greatest player of all-time in the NBA never seems to reach consensus. This ongoing debate can sometimes become emotional and personal, leading to arguments and in extreme cases resulting in violence and subsequent arrest. Creating a statistical model to rank players may also help coaches determine important variables for player development and aid in future approaches to the game via key data-driven performance indicators. However, computing this type of model is extremely difficult due to the many individual player statistics and achievements to consider, as well as the impact of changes to the game over time on individual player performance analysis. This study used linear regression to create an accurate model for the top 150 player rankings. The variables computed included: points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, win shares per 48 minutes, and number ofNBA championships won. The results revealed that points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, and NBA championships were all necessary for an accurate model and win shares per 48 minutes were not significant.

  • Improving Your Youth Basketball Team: Five Simple Skills by Brian Mccormick
Improving Your Youth Basketball Team: Five Simple Skills by Brian McCormick As a basketball consultant and personal trainer, I work with numerous youth, high school and college basketball teams and players every year. At every practice, players are deficient in at least one of these five simple skills, ultimately decreasing the team's offensive efficiency. While none will automatically make someone a great basketball player or turn a team into a championship contender, every player must possess these skills so his/her team's offense runs smoothly. These are simple skills which can easily be introduced and reinforced through everyday drills that require little practice time. However, these skills must be emphasized. 1. Left-handed Lay-ups. At an "elite" camp last summer, a high school freshman informed me she did not have to practice using her right hand (she was left-handed) because her coach never put her on the right side of the floor. Every good player possesses the ability to use either right or left hand. I am not an old-school coach (like my father) who believes a player should always use the outside hand on the dribble or a lay-up. However, players must possess the ability to use either hand and must use the correct hand based on the situation. Watching Manu Ginobili and Steve Nash during the play-offs should only serve to reinforce the importance of ambidexterity around the basket. 2. The Box. Youth basketball's biggest detraction is the number of jump balls; while some see jump balls as great defense and hustle, many result from weak offensive play, and the constant barrage of whistles slows the game's tempo.

The absence of any single authoritative work and extensiveness of existing material make necessary for a full appreciation of the problem a study more prolonged than the average interested person is willing or able to make. The present work, presenting as it does both an attempt at critical evaluation of previous investigations and an original study of laterality characteristics in a group of normal children, will it is hoped satisfy a need for a comprehensive report on the subject. The practical problems confronting teachers and parents dealing with left-handed children have been kept in the forefront through out, in the hope that the information contained herein may make some contribution towards a better understanding of left-handedness and may even lead to a more tolerant attitude towards the * sinister minority*, to which the author herself belongs.

The study demonstrates how similar decision-making situations can be perceived differently: where one decision- maker may identify a challenge, another may find a way to channel tensions toward creative purposes. The two distinct yet interrelated literature streams of dualities and organizational ambidexterity have recognized the need for managers to respond to conflicting internal and external demands, which exposes them to a myriad of cognitive challenges.
