The tailed frog, Ascaphus truei, inhabits permanent headwaters, and several US studies suggest that its populations decline following clear-cut logging practices. In British Columbia, this species is considered to be at risk because little is known of its abundance, distribution patterns in the landscape, and habitat needs. We characterized nine logged, buffered and old-growth creeks in each of six watersheds (n 54). Tadpole densities were obtained by area-constrained searches. Despite large natural variation in population size, densities decreased with increasing levels of ®ne sediment (<64 mm diameter), rubble, detritus and wood, and increased with bank width. The parameters that were correlated with lower tadpole densities were found at higher levels in clear-cut creeks than in creeks of other stand types. Tadpole densities were signi®cantly lower in logged streams than in buffered and old-growth creeks; thus, forested buffers along streams appear to maintain natural channel conditions. To prevent direct physical damage and sedimentation of channel beds, we suggest that buffers be retained along permanent headwater creeks. Creeks that display characteristics favoring higher tadpole densities, such as those that have coarse, stable substrates, should have management priority over less favorable creeks. -

Executive Summary In response to the decline in steelhead productivity that has been occurring since the early 1990's, the Thompson Steelhead Technical Subcommittee commissioned the present report to evaluate steelhead status, causes for the decline, effectiveness of management tools and prospects for recovery. The work was motivated by a strong desire among Thompson River First Nations to develop a sound conservation strategy that ensures long-term sustainability and a recovery of the traditional food, social and ceremonial fishery. Thompson River steelhead support a world-class recreational fishery which is managed by the Province of BC. DFO is intimately involved in the management process by developing salmon harvest regulations to mitigate commercial by-catch mortality. First Nations are largely outside of the management process and meaningful consultations have been absent to date. Science and management tools included harvest analysis, juvenile assessment, forecasting procedures, spawner enumeration and enhancement. Conservation thresholds place steelhead numbers in the conservation concern zone in most years. -

Biogeochemical Contributions to the Water Quality of the Skeena River by Solomon Henson INTRODUCTION The Skeena River watershed is about 54,000km2 and extends from central British Columbia to the western coast (figure 1). The river is known for producing tremendous salmon fisheries. Slaymaker (1972) reported that the chemical quality of the Skeena River was high which provides an excellent environment for salmon populations to flourish despite heavy fishing pressures. The Skeena is a diverse watershed that receives water from glacial ablation, snow melt, and precipitation as rain. These hydrologic inputs transport ion species and sediment from the landscape to the river and determine what the overall water quality of the Skeena will be. Figure 1. Henson June 14, 2004 There are three distinct types of tributaries on the Skeena that result from these hydrologic inputs. Those of glacial origin, those that flow clear and are derived from spring water, and those that are tea colored due to high levels of dissolved organic carbon and other organic material. Although the tributaries of the Skeena River have not been extensively studied, this paper will attempt to lay out the possible contributions of these waters to the overall water quality of the main stem. Furthermore, possible mechanisms for these contributions will be considered that include the effects of weathering, temperature, vegetation and soil type on water quality. In 1977 Gibbs laid out three major mechanisms controlling worldwide water chemistry. Atmospheric precipitation dominates in tropical regions where nutrient and organic leaching are high, such that precipitation contains higher solute concentrations than the soil. -

VOTIYO ABS1RACT.-The Gitksan people live along the Skeena River in nonhwest British Columbia, Canada. Gitksan traditional medicine is still practiced as an adjunct to modem allopathic medicine. Medicinal plants are used as decoctions, infusions, poultices, and fumigants, or aTe chewed fur a wide variety of medical conditions. Traditional Gitksan life involved seasonal movement to utilize a wide variety of plant and animal resources. The Gitksan people viewed their environment as a harmonious interacting whole which included people as one of its elements, Maintenance of this balance was crucial to the health of the environment and the survival and health of the people. Shamans, bone setters, midwives and herbalists all contributed to rnainteJ1::mce of h~lth and tT~tment of illness inthe traditional system. Extensive use was made of p)::mt products as medicines. INTRODUCTION AND SEITlNG The Gitksan people of northwestem British Columbia, Canada, live along the Skeena River and its tributaries iFig. 11. The natural environment consists of densely forested wide glacial valleys separated by rugged mountainranges with alpine meadows, glaciers and rocky cliffs at their summits. The region lies in the transition between the Pacific Coast Forest types which extend from Central California to Southeast Alaska and the Boreal Forest which extends across Canada and Central Alaska. The Gitksan culture, too, is transitional, combining coastal fishing strategies with interior hunting and trap ping.lt is part of the North Coast culture area IDrucker 1955, Woooeock 19771 and their language is closely related to Tsimshian IDrucker 1955; Garfield 1939; Duff 1959, 19641. -
