Tennis Fleet Donlei Darnell

Asian cuisine was the featured food at the January KYC Tennis Fleet Potluck on January 9. The tables were more tropical looking with the new fleet tablecloths made from fabric donated by Linnea Brooks and made by Donlei Darnell ; black background bark cloth with red and pink flowers. The January tournament had 19 players and was organized by prospective member Richard Le C ler c with seeding done by Greg Siok. It was a beautiful day for tennis and play went on from 8:30 until after N oon. The winners for this first play of the year were Women : 1st - Linnea Brooks, 2nd -Terry Beuret, 3rd - Sherri Phillips and Donlei Darnell. Men : 1st - Rob Rietow and Bob Babyack, 2nd - Richard LeClerc, Harvey Minsky, and Ko Isayama, 3rd - Bob Yoder and Aaron Phillips. Additional players were Steve Brooks, Betsy Denzer, Jean Mark and Mom Fernie, Keegan Giles, JoAnn Goebert, Pam Isayama, Susie Jannuzzi, and Lynn Pease. The Co-Fleet Captains, Rob Rietow and Kit Beuret, have come up with a very fun schedule for the fleet this year. There will be the two annual large tournaments with the Tom Collins in May, and the Clare Lang in September instead of October. Each of those months will have a catered dinner in the evening so players don't have to worry about potluck dishes on those busy days and also encouraging spectators to watch the finals in the late afternoon. Our famous Boil Potluck will again be in August although the location will be at Doug and Margaret Peebles' home. And in June we will have a Courtside Barbe c ue directly following the round robin tournament. December will find us feasting on a catered dinner in the Long House as we usually do. The other months will have a special theme for food and you can read them all on the poster on the bulletin board. Being a member of this very active and fun fleet does not require Bob and Dew Babyack playing tennis, although it is a lot of fun! The dues are $20 a person a year. There are forms in the office you can fill out and leave with your dues. Just ask that they be left in the Tennis Fleet box. You will be welcomed with good companionship, good food and lots of fun…….

She and her Pam, Francine and Barbra...... Three Blonds assistant, Barbra Green, have added prizes awarded for various winners. Each month they will pick a different category to track and award the winners. This month it was total games won.....the winners were Linnea Brooks, 2nd place and Betsy Denzer, 1st place. Introduction to Racing - This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing including, rigging, points of sail, docking and terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Curriculum will focus on performance dinghy handling in El Toros and 420s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic understanding of sailboat racing and tactics. Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Advanced Racing - No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing including racing, tactics, boat handling, and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require attendance at local regattas. El Toro classes will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: There are additional fees for regattas usually around $10.00. Parent participation is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites.
