INOUYE, U.S. SENATOR FROM HAWAII The CHAIRMAN. The Internet is one of the great success stories of the 20th century. It has been a key factor in the ability of the United States to steadily improve worker productivity for the past 15 years. Our economy and the quality of our lives have evolved significantly because of this network of networks. The Internet has created an era of transparency, making it even harder for the corporations and governments to escape scrutiny for actions that do not stand up to the light of day. Again, I would sug- gest that, because of this expanded flow of information, our Nation is much stronger. The Internet has also brought together communities of like-mind- ed individuals who share an interest in a hobby, in a unique cul- ture, or in

Kennedy bounded into Studio 6B in 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Tonight Show host Jack Paar had invited Kennedy onto his program as the first presidential candidate to appear on late night television. Paar treated Kennedy with deference and worked to keep his program largely apolitical, focusing mostly on charming banter with the candidate and questions about his personal life. However, despite Paar’s best efforts, the press slammed him for being too political by even having a politician on his program. Fast- forward fifty-six years to 2016. In the exact same studio, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon conducts a similarly friendly interview with controversial presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Once again the host is widely attacked by the presses. But this time the criticism isn’t that Fallon was being too political, it was that he wasn’t being political enough. In this senior thesis I explore what changes occurred over this six-decade span to make Americans expect more from our late night talk show hosts.

    Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective, 2014 Vol. 3, No. 12, 67-83. http://wp.me/p1Bfg0-1LR Visioneering a Better Future: The Hieroglyph Project, STS, and the Future of Science and Technology Joshua Earle, Virginia Tech On October 2nd, 2014 authors, scientists, policy experts and journalists gathered to ask how the future of science and technology intersects with fiction and storytelling. Future Tense—a partnership between the New America Foundation, Arizona State University and Slate magazine—and Issues in Science and Technology hosted “Can We Imagine Our Way to a Better Future” at the National Academies in Washington D.C. Inspired by Neal Stephenson’s 2011 piece “Innovation Starvation” and the resultant Hieroglyph: Stories and Visions for a Better Future anthology, the panelists tackled questions from the ethics of robot babysitters and drones, to who will get to imagine for the human race, how neuroscience might improve lives and the ethics therein, surveillance and privacy concerns, and the place of fiction in tackling wicked problems. I will take you through brief description of the Hieroglyph project, then introduce each of the panels with embedded videos, and then discuss some of the issues raised, some criticism of the discussions (including reactions of some of the people participating in the online discussion during the event), as well as identifying places where Science Technology and Society scholars may have be able to leverage our own expertise to affect some beneficial change. The Hieroglyph Anthology A Hieroglyph is a simple, recognizable symbol, on whose meaning everyone agrees.     The 25TH ANNUAL YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL 25 THE FUTURE OF THEATRE IS HERE Welcome to the 25th Anniversary of The Blank Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival! Wow! Did I really just write that? In Hollywood, nothing stays relevant for 25 years! What did it take to keep this program alive, vital and growing for a quarter of a century? People - exceptional humans who volunteered to give a professional opportunity to the most talented young writers in the nation. Money – generous donors who have supported YPF over the years; from Foundations to individual donors who gave whatever they could, some even children themselves. Love – tons of love, from artists and audiences alike. When you see a play that stirs you, then see the 15-year-old who wrote it, you can’t help but fall in love. And most of all, it took exceptionally talented young people who were brave enough to write a play and submit it to YPF. They are all my heroes, whether they won or not. In 25 years, we have produced 296 plays from 33 states by 166 young women and 142 young men (some plays were by more than 1 writer). Our winning alumni have been honored with: Tony Award for “Best Play”; 3 Grammy Awards; LA Drama Critics Circle Award for “Outstanding New Play” (at age 25); Primus Prize for Playwrighting; 2 Pulitzer Prize Finalist designations; “Best Play”- NY Drama Critics Circle, Obie Awards, NY Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, Drama Desk; Ovation Award nomination (at age 19); NY Outer Critics Circle Gassner Playwriting Award nomination; and many others including Helen Hayes and San Diego Critics Circle nominations.
