Match background

In the past three UEFA Champions League campaigns, Chelsea FC have recorded two aggregate victories and one defeat in the Round of 16. Having returned from the Estádio do Dragão with a 1-1 draw they will be confident of making it three wins in four at this stage to scupper FC Porto's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since they were crowned champions in 2004.

• Porto's hopes of matching the achievement of three years ago under José Mourinho and progressing through the knockout rounds were raised when Raul Meireles fired Porto into a 12th-minute first-leg lead. However, Andriy Shevchenko maintained his recent upturn in form with an excellent equaliser to leave honours shared. The teams also matched each other in terms of efforts against the woodwork - Ricardo Quaresma and Didier Drogba the men to be denied.

• So it is all to play for at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea, under Mourinho, have suffered only one reverse in 13 UEFA Champions League outings - to eventual winners FC Barcelona at this stage 12 months ago. It was the only time in their four tilts at Europe's greatest club prize that they had failed to reach the quarter-finals.

• In this season's group campaign that formidable home was underlined as Chelsea won all three games, scoring five goals with none conceded.

• A repeat of their home result against these opponents in the 2004/05 season would delight everyone connected with the London club. It ended 3-1 in Chelsea's favour with Aleksei Smertin and Drogba giving Mourinho's team a comfortable lead before Benni McCarthy replied for the visitors. John Terry then weighed in with the third.

• While that fixture was Chelsea's first against Portuguese opposition in UEFA club competition, their opponents have a more extensive history as far as visits to England are concerned. They may still be searching for their first away win but have reason to travel with confidence because they can point to a number of wins overall.

• They accounted for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in the 1974/75 UEFA Cup first round and Manchester United FC in the second round of the 1977/78 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup after having built three and four-goal leads from the opening legs in Portugal.

• Away defeats against Tottenham Hotspur FC, United and Liverpool FC resulted in Porto's elimination from all three European club competitions during the 1990s and into the 2000/01 season, and they will recall more fondly their visit to Old Trafford in 2003/04 as a last-minute equaliser from Costinha maintained a momentum which took them all the way to the UEFA Champions League final in Gelsenkirchen and ultimate glory against AS Monaco FC.

• Jesualdo Ferreira's team travelled to England for their first away game in Group G on 26 September, going down 2-0 against Arsenal FC. However, they gained maximum points from their next two fixtures out of the country, beating Hamburger SV 3-1 and PFC CSKA Moskva 2-0. Those results helped them finish on eleven points in the section, the same as Arsenal who took top spot through a superior head-to-head record.

• Claude Makelele has the next highest total of UEFA Champions League games with 79 but has made the most appearances in UEFA club competition having played 109 times.

• Ashley Cole's next UEFA Champions League appearance will be his 50th; the left-back has never played in another UEFA club competition.

• Ricardo Carvalho made his 50th UEFA Champions League appearance in the Matchday 1 defeat of Werder Bremen and has since taken his total to 55 games.

• Shevchenko is the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League in the current Chelsea squad with 45 goals to his name. Only Drogba (16 goals), Ballack (12) and Frank Lampard (eleven) have also got into double figures.

• The Matchday 3 game against FC Barcelona at Stamford Bridge was Hilário's first in the UEFA Champions League since his appearance for FC Porto against FC Bayern München on 19 April 2000. Carlo Cudicini appeared in the competition against Bremen on Matchday 5 for the first time since the home match with Real Betis Balompié on 19 October 2005.

• After seven matches Drogba is the joint leading scorer in this season's UEFA Champions League thanks to his hat-trick in Sofia on Matchday 2 and his goal in each game against Barça. • The Ivorian striker has been caught offside on nine occasions, with Mohamed Tchite, no longer involved in the competition, leading that list on 17.

• Ballack has committed 23 fouls, one fewer than Brandão, who is the competition's most penalised player although no longer involved. He has been fouled 14 times. Essien has committed 17 fouls - three more than he has suffered - and Drogba 14.

• Of the teams left in the competition, only Olympique Lyonnais have commited more fouls (127) than Chelsea and LOSC Lille Métropole (125).

• Only AS Roma, with 19, of the teams still involved have collected more yellow cards than Chelsea and Lille's total of 17.

• Drogba will celebrate his 29th birthday on 11 March, the day after Lassana Diarra turns 22. Magnus Hedman will be 34 on 19 March.

• Petr Čech, Ballack, Makelele and Essien were all booked in the first leg against Porto. Essien is one caution away from a one-match suspension as is Joe Cole.

• Seven of Chelsea's eleven goals this season have come in the second half. They have yet to find the net inside the first 15 minutes of a match.

• On Saturday Chelsea recorded a hard-fought 2-0 Premiership victory away to Portsmouth FC. Drogba scored the opening goal with a volley on 32 minutes before substitute Kalou secured the three points after converting Ashley Cole's assist nine minutes from time.

• Drogba's goal was the Ivorian striker's 29th for Chelsea this season in all competitions and his 18th in the league.

• The victory, coupled with Manchester United FC's win earlier in the day meant that the Premiership champions remained nine points adrift of their rivals at the top of the table.

• Mourinho said: "Our job is to keep winning matches and reduce the gap at the top to six points so the pressure is on them. We have to win all our matches and wait for them to drop some points. It was a big victory today and no injuries. That is almost unique this season."

• The Chelsea starting lineup showed two changes from that which triumphed in the English League Cup final six days earlier with Ashley Cole replacing Wayne Bridge and Arjen Robben also coming into the side as Terry was ommited after suffering a head injury in Cardiff. Mikel was ruled out through suspension following his sending off in that game.

• Ashley Cole was making his first appearance since 31 January because of a knee injury.

• Joe Cole remains on the treatment table as he recovers from a foot operation but Boulahrouz is on the verge of returning from a dislocated shoulder after rejoining training last Thursday.

• Speaking about Chelsea captain Terry, manager José Mourinho said: "John has no chance of playing against Porto. The man is before the player. John is more important than a football result and we won't risk him."

• The victory increased Chelsea's recent unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions. They have won their last eight games in domestic football .

• With the win Chelsea kept up a record of having not lost against Portsmouth in 50 years, since a 3-0 reverse on Boxing Day 1957.

• Chelsea followed-up their draw in Porto by lifting the English League Cup at the Millennium Stadium against Arsenal FC four days later, defeating their London rivals 2-1. Mourinho's side had to come from behind in Cardiff after Theo Walcott's early goal (12) but two efforts by Drogba (20 and 84) clinched victory.

• Chelsea ended the game with ten men following Mikel's sending-off in added time in an incident where Arsenal had Kolo Touré and Emmanuel Adebayor dismissed.

• Mikel was handed a four-game suspension. It was his second red card of the season having also been dismissed against Reading FC on 14 October.

• Terry had to be carried off on a stretcher during the final after being knocked unconscious when accidentally kicked in the face by Arsenal's Abou Diaby. He was taken to hospital but discharged the same day.

• "It was a great game between two teams with two different styles but history will show we have taken the cup home," said Mourinho.

• It was the fourth time Chelsea had won the trophy following previous success in 2005, 1998 and 1965.

• Against Arsenal they are now unbeaten in the sides' last nine meetings. The last time the north London team won was at Stamford Bridge on 21 February 2004.

• Chelsea are unbeaten at home since 22 February 2006 when FC Barcelona won 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League. They have come out on top in their last eight games at Stamford Bridge.

• Drogba was named African Footballer of Year on 1 March, winning the honour for the first time. The 28-year-old received five more votes than three-time winner Samuel Eto'o of Barcelona, with the Cameroonian second and Drogba's Chelsea teammate Essien in third.

• On 1 March the club announced a four-year deal with the Asian Football Confederation under which the club will sponsor and aid the development of the AFC's grassroots programmes in China.

• Plymouth Argyle FC teenagers Dan Gosling and Luke Summerfield have spent a week training at Chelsea. Gosling, 17, is a right-sided midfielder while 19-year-old Summerfield usually plays in a central midfield role for his club in England's second tier.

Porto

• Seven Porto players have featured in all seven UEFA Champions League matches to date: Helton, Pepe, Bruno Alves, Ricardo Quaresma, Lucho González, Lisandro López and Hélder Postiga. Of those, Helton, Pepe, Bruno Alves and González have played all 630 minutes so far.

• Vítor Baía is by a distance the most experienced member of the Porto squad having played in 56 UEFA Champions League matches and 108 in total in all UEFA club competition. The goalkeeper has not featured so far this season, however, with Brazilian Helton taking his bow both in the UEFA Champions League and European competition against CSKA on Matchday 1 and remaining ever present since then.

• Vítor Baía aside, only Bosingwa and Hélder Postiga of the Porto squad have made 20 or more appearances in Europe's premier cup competition with 32 and 23 to their names from a total of 45 and 38 matches respectively in UEFA club competition. Quaresma reached the 20-game mark against Arsenal FC on Matchday 6.

• Helton was one of five Porto players to make their debut in the UEFA Champions League proper on Matchday 1; the others were Ezequias, Anderson, Tarik Sektioui and Adriano, although Ezequias and Sektioui have now left the club. In addition, coach Jesualdo Ferreira was on the touchline for the first time in a UEFA Champions League group stage match.

• Fucile and made their first appearances in UEFA club competition against Hamburger SV on Matchday 3.

• Hélder Postiga is the top scorer in UEFA club matches in the current Porto squad with seven goals to his name, two more than Tomislav Šokota - who missed the entire group stage through injury - while López and González both have four goals.

• Only four Porto players had scored in the UEFA Champions League before Matchday 3: Pepe, Ricardo Costa, González and López. The latter two then both struck against Hamburg, with Hélder Postiga also on target. González and López also found the net in the reverse fixture in Germany with Bruno Moraes adding a late third before Quaresma and Lucho González earned victory away to PFC CSKA Moskva in the penultimate Group G match. Raul Meireles joined the list with his goal on Matchday 7.

• López and González are two of nine players to have scored three times in the first six games; Didier Drogba, Fernando Morientes, Kaká, Raúl González and Ruud van Nistelrooy lead the way after Matchday 7 with five goals each to their name.

• Quaresma and López have provided two assists to date, three fewer than Juninho Pernambucano, who has set up the most goals.

• Hélder Postiga has had ten shots on goal, three fewer than Kaká who has had the most. Quaresma has managed nine attempts on target, López has eight.

• Quaresma has also missed the target with nine shots, five fewer than Thierry Henry who has had the most efforts wide in the competition. Hélder Postiga and Pepe have both missed the target on seven occasions.

• Hélder Postiga has been caught offside 14 times, three fewer than Mohamed Tchite, who is no longer involved in the competition.

• Paulo Assunção has committed 12 fouls so far, with Brandão the most penalised player having conceded 24 fouls.

• Quaresma is one of the most fouled players in this season's competition having been impeded 20 times. Artem Milevskiy, Ronaldinho and Francesco Totti have each been stopped illegally on 24 occasions, although the former is no longer involved in the competition.

• Porto have conceded just five goals in the competition. Only Olympique Lyonnais (three), and Arsenal FC, AC Milan and AS Roma (all four) have a better record after the first seven matchdays.

• Porto have had 89 shots in total, 12 fewer than LOSC Lille Métropole who have had the most of the teams left in the competition.

• Of the sides in the last 16, only AC Milan with 45 have won more corners than Porto's total of 41.

• López turned 24 last Saturday while Raul Meireles will celebrate the same birthday on 17 March.

• After his booking in the first leg against Chelsea, Pepe is one caution away from a one-match suspension. No other Porto player has been booked more than once in the competition. Of the teams left in the competition, only PSV Eindhoven (five) had fewer cautions than Porto (nine) before Matchday 8.

• Porto have scored half of their ten goals this season in the last 30 minutes of matches. They are also potent in the first 15 minutes, scoring three times in that period. Only FC Barcelona (five) and Olympique Lyonnais (four) are more dangerous.

• Porto overcame SC Braga 1-0 on Saturday night to reinforce their position at the head of the Liga. The only goal of the game was scored by Adriano in the ninth minute, after a cross from González. The defending champions could have won by more had González not seen his second-half penalty saved by Braga goalkeeper Paulo Santos.

• Coach Jesualdo Ferreira opted to include Brazilian striker Adriano in his starting eleven in place of Postiga, who started on the bench. Full-back Marek Čech was absent after complaining of sickness the morning of the match and was replaced by Bosingwa, although the latter had to be withdrawn early in the second half with a thigh problem that will keep him out of the Chelsea game. González was also taken off injured midway through the second half but will be fit to travel to London.

• Postiga remains Porto's top scorer in the league with nine goals.

• The striker's goals have contributed to Porto's record of being the most potent side in front of goal in the Liga. The northern team have scored a total of 44 goals in the league this season.

• The Dragons have the best defence too, conceding only ten goals this season in the league.

• "My team was not at their best today," said Ferreira. "We had a good first 15 minutes and scored a goal. However, we stopped pressing and the team became defensive. In the second half we missed the opportunity to kill the match by missing the penalty, but continued to control the game."

• In the game with Braga, two former Porto players returned to the club - coach Jorge Costa and his assistant Aloísio - and also pitted home coach Ferreira against the side he coached from 2003 to 2006.

• Porto got an impressive 5-0 win at struggling SC Beira-Mar on 25 February. Argentinian forward López (18) gave Ferreira's side the lead in Aveiro but they had to wait until the 70th minute to score again, through López's countryman González. Further efforts by Raul Meireles (74), Alan (76) and an Adriano penalty (87) rounded off the victory.

• Ferreira made just one change to the team that drew against Chelsea with Čech being deployed at left-back in place of Fucile.

• Porto were still without Pedro Emanuel after the central defender was forced to undergo a second operation on the achilles injury that has kept him sidelined since August. Meanwhile, Anderson is still recovering from the broken leg he suffered in October and Jorginho did not travel to Aveiro due to an achilles problem.

• Porto's victory against Beira-Mar was the Dragons' best of the season, eclipsing four-goal hauls against Hamburger SV, FC Paços de Ferreira and A. Naval 1º de Maio.

• Brazilian winger Alan's goal against Beira-Mar was his first of the campaign. The only other time he has found the net for Porto was on 10 September 2005 against Rio Ave FC.

• Brazilian midfielder Léo Lima, who was loaned by Porto to Grêmio FPA until June 2007, has left the Porto Alegre club to join CR Flamengo on a similar contract.

Head coach profiles

Chelsea FC: José Mourinho Date of birth: 26 January 1963 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: SL Benfica, UD Leiria, FC Porto, Chelsea FC

Tactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has carved a reputation as the best and most scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguese citizen, recognising his achievements as manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Mourinho started working life as a teacher before being lured into football by Sir Bobby Robson as part of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After a brief nine-game spell at SL Benfica and a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Porto coach in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next year Porto retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.

Replacing Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridge on 2 June 2004 and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a record points total and just one loss, adding the League Cup. The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contract in May 2005. Twelve months later, he was celebrating a second successive Premiership title although, after seeing Chelsea again fall short in the UEFA Champions League, it is Europe which will take much of his focus in 2006/07. FC Porto: Jesualdo Ferreira Date of birth: 6 June 1946 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: A. Académica de Coimbra, CF Estrela da Amadora, FAR Rabat, Portuguese Football Association (youth coach), FC Alverca, SL Benfica, SC Braga, Boavista FC, FC Porto

Manuel Jesualdo Ferreira has come a long way before arriving at FC Porto prior in summer 2006 at the age of 60. Despite a low-key playing career, it gave him a valuable grounding and he was quick to put those lessons into practice as a coach at A. Académica de Coimbra and CF Estrela da Amadora. His career took a step forward as assistant to António Oliveira at SL Benfica, and he was part of the coaching set-up that brought the Portuguese title to the Lisbon club in 1993/94. He then moved abroad to take charge of Moroccan outfit FAR Rabat.

He returned to his homeland within a year to work with the Portuguese Football Association between 1996 and 2000, including an assistant role in the senior set-up and responsibility for the Under-21 side. He then had a brief spell at FC Alverca before returning to Benfica but failed to make an impact after taking full control of first-team affairs and left in April 2003. Success with SC Braga was just around the corner, however, whom he guided to fifth place in 2003/04 and fourth in each of the following two seasons.

He was naturally a coach in demand and in May 2006 was given the reins at Boavista FC, only to leave without taking charge of a single competitive match. The vacancy at cross-city rivals Porto was too good to resist the following August and he did not hesitate in signing a one-year contract with the 2004 UEFA Champions League winners. He then earned a further year in signing an extension in November 2006. Having taken unfashionable Braga into the UEFA Cup three seasons running, including the 2006/07 campaign, Ferreira has a chance for glory in the finest club competition of all.

Having been assigned to various UEFA youth and club competition fixtures, Rosetti also took charge of FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures before ahead of his selection by the world governing body for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Last season was something of a watershed as he stepped up to the UEFA Champions League group stage – handling two games – before being named as one of nine European referees for the FIFA World Cup. Rosetti, at 1.9m the tallest referee in Germany, was in the middle for four matches culminating in Spain's knockout defeat by France. His appointment on Matchday 3 meant he was the only official to have worked on the first three matchdays of the 2006/07 edition, although he sat out on Matchday 4. When relaxing away from sport, he enjoys reading, watching movies and playing tennis.

UEFA information

Manchester celebration Preparations are continuing for the celebration match between Manchester United FC and a Europe XI, coached by Marcello Lippi, at Old Trafford, Manchester on Tuesday 13 March. The game, which kicks off at 20.00 local time (21.00CET), will mark two jubilees: Manchester United FC's half-century in European competitions, and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which laid the foundations for the modern-day European Union.

The celebration is being staged by the Manchester United Foundation in cooperation with UEFA, with support from the European Union. All proceeds will go to charity. German referee Markus Merk will take charge of the match which will feature a host of top players including Ronaldinho and David Beckham.

Regarding accreditation requests, these will be processed by Manchester United. The deadline is 12.00CET on Tuesday 6 March. Requests should be sent by fax - on paper bearing your company's letterhead - to Leanne Bartram, using the following number in the UK: (+44) 161 868 8804. The city code from within the UK is 0161. In case of enquiries, Leanne Bartram can also be reached via email on [email protected]

Trophy tour The UEFA Champions League trophy is touring Asia for the first time over the next six weeks, visiting five countries to celebrate Europe's premier club competition - while also highlighting the huge interest in football in that region. The UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour - presented by sponsors Heineken - kicked off in the Japanese capital Tokyo and moved on to Jakarta, Indonesia until last Sunday. The next dates will be: Hong Kong (China, 16-18 March), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 22-25 March), and the Thai cities of Bangkok (30 March-1 April) and Pattaya (6-8 April).

"By creating initiatives like the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour, we are making the UEFA Champions League experience more accessible to local football fans and enabling them to share in the magic of Europe's best club competition," explained Michele Centenaro, UEFA's head of club competitions. "It builds on the UEFA Champions Gallery and UEFA Young Champions tournament to bring fans across the world closer to the passion and excitement of our competition."

Draw/match dates The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League first knockout round draw was held on 15 December at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The eight group winners were drawn against the eight runners-up into two-legged ties to be played on 20/21 February and 6/7 March. Clubs from the same country could not be drawn against each other while teams who met in the group stage were also kept apart. Group runners-up play the first leg at home. The quarter-finals will follow on 3/4 and 10/11 April, with the semi-finals on 24/25 April and 1/2 May. The draw for these rounds will be held on 9 March in Athens.

Player registration The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League regulations confirm that for all matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club was allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration had to be completed by 1 February. One player from the above quota of three who has played in UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may have been exceptionally registered, provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club and/or for another club that is currently in the same competition.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 16 occasions. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when the Spanish club fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Twelve ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Last season, Villarreal CF beat Rangers FC and FC Internazionale Milano by this method in the first knockout round and quarter-finals respectively.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC Porto in the 1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only five ties have gone to penalties. Four of these have come in finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The only two-legged tie to be decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, ten ties have required extra-time. Along with the five ties mentioned above, four quarter-finals and one first knockout round encounter have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• No new countries are represented in the knockout phase of this season's competition but 17 nations have had teams participate at least once since 1992/93. Three clubs - AS Roma, Celtic FC and LOSC Lille Métropole - are all appearing for the first time.

• Real Madrid CF have set a new record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. This is the tenth straight season since 1997/98 that they have made it to this stage, moving them ahead of Manchester United, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stage eleven times, one more than United and FC Bayern München.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals over its two legs than any previous tie – a total of 12 as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• There has never been a tie ending goalless after two legs. Seven have finished 1-0 on aggregate, Arsenal FC featured in two of them in 2005/06 as they overcame Madrid and Villarreal on their way to the final.

• Athens was awarded the 23 May 2007 final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League showpiece of 1993/94, when Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Prior to 1994, Athens also saw the European Champion Clubs' Cup lifted in 1982/83, the year after the venue was first inaugurated. On that occasion, Hamburger SV beat Juventus FC 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFC Ajax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.

Team facts

Chelsea FC

UEFA club competition milestones • Although having emerged as a major force in recent years, success in the European Champion Clubs' Cup has eluded Chelsea. Their best campaigns to date in the UEFA Champions League came when they reached the 2003/04 and 2004/05 semi-finals, although the club have won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup on two occasions.

• Their first victory came at the end of the 1970/71 season where they defeated Real Madrid CF 2-1 in a final replay in Athens after the sides had shared a 1-1 draw. Chelsea will hope for similar success in the Greek capital in May 2007. Chelsea won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup again 27 years later when overcoming VfB Stuttgart 1-0, thanks to Gianfranco Zola's 70th-minute goal in Stockholm.

UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1970/71, 1997/98 • UEFA Super Cup: 1998

Ten-year record (includng current season) • Chelsea are competing in their fourth successive UEFA Champions League campaign having reached the semi-final stage in the first two seasons of that run. Overall, this is Chelsea's fifth time in the competition, and to date, every appearance has resulted in qualification for the knockout stages. This season, four victories and a draw from their six outings provided a first-placed finish in their group, two points clear of last season's European Champion Clubs' Cup winners, FC Barcelona.

European record: Chelsea finished behind Liverpool FC in their group after a 1-0 defeat by Real Betis Balompié. It meant they played a group winner in the first knockout round, namely eventual winners FC Barcelona. After a 2-1 home defeat, they went out after a 1-1 away draw - their 50th European Champion Clubs' Cup match.

UEFA club competition milestones • Porto have twice been crowned continental champions. The first European Champion Clubs' Cup success came in the 1986/87 final at the expense of FC Bayern München following a 2-1 win in Vienna. Ludwig Kögl opened the scoring for the Bavarian side after 25 minutes only for Porto to hit back through Rabah Madjer (77) and Juary (80).

• The club also lifted the 2002/03 UEFA Cup with a 3-2 victory at Celtic FC's expense in Sevilla before claiming the ultimate prize for a second time 12 months later with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC with goals from Carlos Alberto (39), Deco (71) and Dmitri Alenichev (75).

• Porto have also appeared in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final, losing 2-1 to Juventus in Basle.

Ten-year record (including current season) • Porto are involved in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign in 12 seasons and their fourth in a row. In this season's group stage, Porto and Arsenal FC both recorded three victories and two draws from their six outings in the group stage, but the English side topped the standings due to their better head-to-head record against their Portuguese opponents (a 2-0 victory followed by a scoreless draw).

It meant they again would progress directly to the UEFA Champions League group stage. They also secured the double by winning the Portuguese Cup with a 1-0 defeat of Vitória FC.

European record: Porto disappointed in the group stage last season, being undermined by successive 3-2 defeats by Rangers FC and FC Artmedia. They then defeated FC Internazionale Milano 2-0 but a defeat in the Inter return and draws against Rangers and Artmedia left the club bottom of the section.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals rule: For ties in the first knockout round, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

Quaresma plots Chelsea exit Had Ricardo Quaresma aimed just a fraction lower two weeks ago at the Estádio do Dragão then FC Porto would be defending a 2-1 lead at Stamford Bridge instead of having to plot a route past Chelsea FC and their masterful goalkeeper Petr Čech.

'Great goalkeeper' Chelsea manager José Mourinho said on Monday that his No1 has returned from a serious head injury showing even better form than before, yet Quaresma remains undaunted by the task facing the Portuguese champions in the second leg of their first knockout round tie. "He is a great goalkeeper but he has let goals in before," said the talented winger, who beat the Czech international, if not the crossbar, with a stunning strike using the outside of his boot a fortnight ago.

'No advantage' "We'll do the best we can to get the ball past Čech," Quaresma continued. "Winning any game brings great joy and it would bring even more this time if we're able to beat Chelsea. They are a good team with very strong players and they also have a great manager. The fact that John Terry is not fit gives us no advantage because Chelsea have other good players they can bring in."

Close marking The quality the 23-year-old has demonstrated this season guarantees him close attention wherever he goes, and it is certain Mourinho will have reminded his team of the danger Quaresma poses. Close marking, however, is not something that concerns the Portuguese international. "Every game I've got a marker up against me, and it doesn't worry me," he said. "All that concerns me is playing the game and doing the best we can. This game gives us the opportunity to show we are a good team. We have good players and we can do very well here."

Drogba thirsty for trophies With another three crucial goals to his name since he was last involved in the UEFA Champions League, Didier Drogba has thrust himself to the front of the queue in England for the prestigious Footballer of the Year award.

Team spirit It would be a coveted prize to stand beside his new accolade as African Player of the Year. However, ahead of Tuesday's first knockout round second leg at home to FC Porto, the Chelsea FC striker insists collecting individual honours means nothing if his team are not on the podium picking up trophies.

Trophies wanted "I want my team to win and for everyone to be happy," said Drogba. "And there is no interest for me in scoring if we don't win. If I don't score again this season, it is not a problem if the team wins the Champions League, the Premiership title and the FA Cup."

Porto encounter To lift all three remaining trophies following the English League Cup they claimed four days after returning from Portugal with a 1-1 first-leg draw, is a huge ask. But make no mistake: Chelsea believe it is within their capabilities. And Drogba says they are not feeling any undue pressure as the season enters its critical last phase.

League Cup success He scored twice at the Millennium Stadium to dash Arsenal FC's hopes of landing the League Cup after they had seized the lead. Then, at the weekend, his shot from a tight angle put Chelsea ahead against Portsmouth FC in a game they eventually won 2-0 to remain within nine points of Premiership leaders Manchester United FC.

Goal tally It raised his tally to 29 goals for the campaign and he is about to become the first Chelsea marksman to break the 30-barrier since Kerry Dixon 22 years ago. Two more and he will equal the best achieved by another Chelsea legend, Peter Osgood, in a single season. And he has achieved all this without the advantage of taking penalties.

Mourinho tribute It is a remarkable season's work by a player who will celebrate his 29th birthday at the weekend, and manager José Mourinho paid him another fulsome tribute. "It is different for a striker to play in England compared to other countries," said Mourinho. "They need time to adapt. When we bought Didier we knew he had the qualities to enable him to play in England and he has improved year after year, step by step. He is now at the top of his game."
