Jo Barrett camps it up

HAMMER horror meets country house murder mystery was in this wacky production from the Boxford Drama Group, with a large dash of Addams Family dark comedy added for good measure. By setting the tone right from the very beginning, Joe Barrett as Vernon Prewitt was the key to the rest of the play's success. Wandering around in a pinny with feather duster in pink marigold-clad hand, he employed more camp clichés than if he had been auditioning to be the only gay in the village. It was all so outrageous that it gave the rest of the cast licence to take their characters out on a limb. This was a play where nothing was what it seemed and nobody was who they appeared to be. All the players and back room staff are to be congratulated on another excellent production and those responsible for scenery and special effects The Cast, most having come back from the dead. deserve applause for making the whole production work as slickly as it did.

Bildeston, Market Place, opp Clock Tower 0945 The downside of this is the extra time it takes me to reach Chelsworth, The Street, opp The Peacock 0948 my destinations. It’s not just because of the extra distance, Monks Eleigh, The Street, opp The Swan 0951 LBirtetlnet WEleailgdhin, gMfiledledn, Road,A1141 (S/B) 0954 but because the narrowness of the roads and the bends The Street, Swan 1001 concealing oncoming cars means that I have to drive more , The Heath, Post Office 1004 slowly (no bad thing!). Sudbury, Bus Station 1013 The upside, though, for me, has outweighed any slight inconvenience. I have discovered more of the places where parishioners live, as well as new parts of the lovely countryside which surrounds us. I have also seen familiar places from a completely new angle, like the view of Groton church in the distance coming down the lane towards Groton from Castling’s Heath. It was the same thing recently when, on our day off, Rufus and I were thwarted from reaching our destination by a long hold-up on the A14. Our initial reaction was dismay, but we started to look for an alternative route, leaving the A14 by the nearest exit. One of the joys of having Ordnance Survey maps in the car, rather than relying on Sat Nav, is that you can see at a glance the area around you and pick out its interesting features. That meant that we were able to find our way to a pleasant secluded church, just a mile or two away, where we sat in peace to eat our packed lunch. Life throws up many things which block the path we wanted to take – for all kinds of reasons – and that can make us feel, quite naturally, angry, bitter, frustrated or disappointed. But it’s my belief that, if we can hold on to a trust in God, we will find that he is able to open up new paths for us, to show us new vistas, to reveal new insights into the problems which have dogged us. “Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths.” (Psalm 25)

Charlie Haylock, who is one of Suffolk's leading entertainers, put on an informative and hilarious show He managed to reduce the audience at Groton Village Hall on Saturday 9th April to tears of laughter with his story telling during his one man show "An Eccentric Look At Suffolk". But he had a serious side and also gave a highly informative talk about the history of the English language and the importance of the Suffolk dialect. It was a great Saturday evening out and we enjoyed some great refreshments during the interval. Groton PCC made about £300, towards the Church funds thanks to Charlie’s generosity. Anyone can attend these sessions. Although primarily aimed at the over 50 age group, there are men and women of all ages and abilities who attend. The exercises are done at a pace to suit everyone and can be adapted for special needs. The sessions may help to increase or maintain independence, help with strength and balance, and most importantly aid with activities of daily living. In addition to the physical health benefits, the groups are a great social opportunity to meet with others and have a chat while exercising. I am not looking to earn any money from running the classes so would not intend to charge beyond a small contribution to the costs. If you think you might be interested in taking part in a class, or know somebody that might, please give me a call on 210439 or email: [email protected] and I’ll take down your details. If you have any specific medical concerns however, you would need to speak to your practice nurse or GP about your thoughts on attending. I am currently running a class at the Kingfisher in Sudbury at 2.00pm on Thursdays. The admission the fee Kingfisher are charging at the moment is £2.80. All are welcome, so if you’d like to see what it’s all about, come along, I’d love to see you. PC Garrod, Cllr J Antill and one member of the public. Declarations of Interest: None. Police Matters: PC Chris Garrod confirmed there had been 2 reported crimes since the last meeting – the theft of heating oil and items from vehicles at one property, and the further theft of heating oil to the value of £300 from a second property. PC Garrod requested that everyone remain vigilant for unknown vehicles and callers. The priorities of the SNT were discussed, as were oil tank security measures. Members of the SNT are always available to call and advise on security measures that householders can take. Minutes of the last Meeting: These were agreed as a true record and signed by the Chairman. Matters Arising: A ‘village event’ is likely to be held during 2012, as the flower festival is taking place this September and other organisations also have several events already organised. The next meeting of the organisations representatives is due to be held in October. Following the withdrawal of the subsidised bus service in April we have received notification that Beestons will be providing a Saturday service. Leaflets about the Cosford Link have been circulated throughout the village. It is hoped that ‘Go Start’ may be able to partly fill the gap in bus provision, but as this service is provided by volunteers it needs to attract funding. The provision of a footpath to/from the Lavenham Road must be actively pursued if villagers are obliged to walk down there to catch a bus to Sudbury, Lavenham or Bury St Edmunds. Sir Spring is in the air, AND in my feet! Spring is with us and with luck summer not far behind, although the recent warm weather would suggest it has already arrived. Either way good news for me as it makes my recuperation a little easier, and with it further improvement, which I must say is becoming more apparent, as time passes by. I recently completed for the first time an exercise at ICANHO which involved emptying a small basket of toddlers’ toys and putting them all into another plastic basket. This might not seem, at first glance, like a particularly significant event, but bearing in mind that I did this with my left hand which has hitherto been pretty much disabled for the past year and a half and that when I first attempted this a year ago I couldn’t lift a thing, this was no mean achievement. I now make sure that I repeat this exercise every time I go to my Saebo Clinic at ICANHO. In March I had an angiogram at Queen’s Hospital Romford which I must say was an altogether different experience. As a procedure it was fine, but what struck me most was that the room in which it all took place more resembled the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, with banks of computer monitors showing various angles of my head from the inside. The upshot of this is that I do not have to go back for any further procedures. I just continue my ongoing ‘repair and maintenance’. Talking of which, taking those first tentative steps outside of established comfort zones can present real challenges, but conquer them one must. Having been a business facilitator, I now have certain friends of mine who are asking me, not if, but when am I going to host another business Networking Dinner. Had I been asked that question a year ago I would have said a resounding ‘No’, Making your will as the thought of then standing up in front of 200 odd people filled me with total dread! The building itself, I am sure you will agree, fits in very nicely with the surroundings and will be a real asset to local children and families. Over the past few months we have become involved in the Let’s Get Cooking initiative aimed at teaching young children and families the art of cooking. Last week our pupils were involved in the ‘Let’s Get Cooking BIG Cookathon competition which is aimed at getting as many people as possible to cook a healthy dish on April 5th. We managed to make nearly three hundred apple crumbles!! A couple of weeks ago we joined in with the Red Nose Day charity event with ‘Wear Something Funny for Money’. We raised around £200 for this excellent charity so well done and thankyou to all. Earlier this term some of our Year 4 boys and girls attended the Great Cornard Pyramid Schools Football Tournament. Both our teams did very well and were a whisper away from winning the trophy losing 1-0 in their final game. Nonetheless they played very well and in a sporting yet competitive manner and Mr Hood was very proud of them. Well done. On Saturday Mr Hood and I will be taking a group of children to Ipswich Town FC to see them play Crystal Palace. It promises to be a good game with Crystal Palace desperately trying to avoid relegation to the third tier of English football. In the evening three teams from Boxford will be taking part in the annual Swimathon at the Hadleigh Swimming Pool. I am sure you will join me in wishing them every success as they attempt to swim 1,000 metres in aid of the Marie Curie cancer Charity. Finally may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very restful and enjoyable Easter Break.
