GIF ESSAY: Glass 1 Kimber Torres IDS 307T: Digital Writing Matthew Beale Paper 1: GIF Essay February 09, 2020 The Movie: Glass It’s been what seems like forever and now the trilogy will finally be complete. The movie trailer looks unbelievable. The sequel to the Unbreakable and Split has finally happened. This psychological thriller produced by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson that can only get better with the addition of the young Mr. Charles Xavier himself, James McAvoy. The guy is a genius when it comes to his craft. His talent was shining in the first sequel: Split. I couldn’t wait to sit down with a large bowl of popcorn with layered butter and a box of snowcaps at my side to fully enjoy what was about to unfold. The lights fade in the movie theater and the opening credits begin. The trailers play showing the audience some amazing movies coming out in the near future. Looks like I’ll be coming back when some of these movies come out. The room grows pitch black and the first scene opens up with a dark scene, of course. It looks like a large dirty room, maybe a boarded-up factory. Kevin GIF ESSAY: Glass 2 (McAvoy) comes out of the shadows and into the only light in the room. • The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

  • The Nutty Professor – from Julius Kelp to Sherman Klump
THE NUTTY PROFESSOR – FROM JULIUS KELP TO SHERMAN KLUMP: A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF SCIENCE AND SCIENTISTS IN TWO POPULAR FILMS by BEVERLY D. HARVEY (Under the Direction of Jay Hamilton) ABSTRACT This thesis examines the representation of science and scientists in two popular Hollywood films of the same title – The Nutty Professor. One version was released in 1963, starring Jerry Lewis, and the other was released in 1996, with Eddie Murphy. This study is a textual analysis with an emphasis on the “how” of representation within the two films, which serve as cultural artifacts of their respective time periods. In an attempt to gain a more in-depth understanding of the chosen representations of science and scientists in both films, I also study the historical context of the periods surrounding the production and release of each film. One goal of this thesis is to note any changes or similarities in the representation of science and scientists between the two films, which were produced and released more than thirty years apart. • A Bronx Tale
A Bronx Tale Synopsis A Bronx Tale, a new musical set in the early 1960s, is based on the autobiographical play written by Chazz Palminteri. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who finds himself caught between his loving father and a charismatic mob boss. In Act One, Calogero witnesses Sonny, the mob boss, murdering someone right in front of his house on Belmont Avenue; Calogero covers for Sonny when questioned by the NYPD. Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, who is an MTA bus driver, wants to instill a strong sense of right and wrong in his son, but Calogero goes against his father’s wishes. After Sonny is released by the police with no charges against him, he takes Calogero under his wing and helps him get involved with the “glamorous” world of organized crime. Sometime later, Calogero is all grown up and a full prodigy of Sonny, but his father has no idea he has continued to see Sonny. Calogero has also developed a group of Italian- American friends that Sonny thinks is a bad influence over him and encourages Calogero to stick to his schoolwork. Calogero meets an African-American girl, Jane, on Webster Avenue which is a very different side of the Bronx than where Calogero lives. He asks his father for advice on what he should do when he and Jane go on a date. Calogero’s father doesn’t exactly approve of him going out with Jane because he is concerned for his son’s safety, considering the high racial tensions on the time period, but Lorenzo still gives him advice.

The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.
