Movie Clips from “North and South” Ms. Kizlyk – English 3B Viewing Guide for Band of Brothers & The Pacific Directions: We will be watching two episodes from the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Decide on our motif, and, using the back of this paper, write down 3 – 4 examples of scenes where your motif is evident. You will use these descriptions for your WWII project. Leadership is everything The power of friendship of the soldiers Coping with fear and loneliness The violence and brutality of war Transformations - how men are affected by war (during & after the war). Patriotism/Determinism – how the men will do anything to win the war for their country. Heroism in the war - can be shown in small or big ways Escapism – how did soldiers physically or mentally escape during the war? Physical difficulties during war – climate, lack of water, injuries, etc. Survival – people will do anything to survive Band of Brothers, Episode #7: “The Breaking Point” Band of Brothers is a 2001 HBO 12 part miniseries featuring the true story of "E" Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their initial training starting in 1942 to the end of World War II. The episode that you will be watching is Part 7. This episode focuses on Colonel Carwood Lipton as he narrates the story. Having thwarted the Germans at Bastogne, the exhausted Easy Company must now take the nearby town of Foy from the enemy. Several are killed and wounded in fierce shelling, an event compounded by the incompetence of their commander, Lt. Dike. Easy Company takes Foy, but at an enormous cost. Characters: TSgt. Alex Penkala The Pacific, Episodes 5 (last half): “Peleliu Landing” & 6: “Peleliu Airfield” The Pacific is a 2010 HBO 12 part miniseries telling the intertwined stories of three Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. You will first watch the last half of Part 5. In this episode PFC Eugene Sledge has just joined the 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He then gets his first taste of combat as he, PFC Robert Leckie, and the rest of the 1st Marine Division meet fierce Japanese resistance while landing on the intricately and heavily defended coral island of Peleliu. Next, you will watch Part 6 of the series. In this episode Sledge, Leckie, and the other Marines suffer from the suffocating 115-degree heat and a lack of clean drinking water. They confront the highly fortified enemy as they attempt to capture the Peleliu airfield. After seeing his comrades badly injured, Leckie himself is wounded and evacuated from the island. Sledge witnesses the shocking truth as to what is sometimes required to survive and fight another day. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. The second episode focuses on the Normandy invasion and Easy Company’s assignment to take out a German artillery installation. On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied paratroopers dropped from the sky to begin one of the most audacious military campaigns of the war—and one of the most crucial. However, careful planning notwithstanding, most of the members of Easy Company miss their designated drop zones and had to begin the invasion by dealing with their extreme disorientation (heightened for many by the anti-nausea medication the soldiers were instructed to take). With Richard Winters as the company’s commanding officer, Easy Company successfully executes its first assignment in the field, destroying a German artillery installation firing on Allied infantry trying to come ashore. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. In the sixth episode, Easy Company is in the Ardennes Forest, outside of Bastogne, Belgium, trying to defend the Allied line against a German counterattack in December 1944. This contest, popularly known as the Battle of the Bulge, sees the Allies face a bitter winter with inadequate supplies of ammunition, food, and medical goods for the long, entrenched battle. The Axis counterattack was ultimately rebuffed, but not without the Allies suffering some 77,000 casualties. This episode is particularly effective in depicting the harsh physical conditions of the war (and might be compared to the German’s struggle to take Stalingrad, in which the losses were much higher). Fighting frostbite and hunger in the foxholes, Easy Company’s trials demonstrate the experience of isolation and boredom of battle. Here the story of Easy Company is connected with the broader narrative of the war—the ideology of the Third Reich and Hitler’s plan to exterminate the Jews. Sledge was already a combat veteran by this time, having received his baptism of fire on Peleliu in September and October 1944. He was 21 years old. Years later, Sledge described the fighting on Okinawa in mid-May 1945 and the recurring nightmares that it inspired. “The increasing dread of going back into action obsessed me,” he wrote. “It became the subject of the most tortuous and persistent of all the ghastly war nightmares that have haunted me for many, many years. The dream is always the same, going back up to the lines during the bloody, muddy month of May on Okinawa. It remains blurred and vague, but oc- casionally still comes, even after the nightmares about the shock and violence of Peleliu have faded and been lifted from me like a curse.” Nightmares haunted Sledge for decades after the war: as a com- bat veteran and student attending Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) on the G.I.     Short Documentaries on War in the Pacific • The Pacific: Historical Background Part 1 (HBO) • The Pacific: Anatomy of a War (HBO) Japanese Aggression Builds • In the early 1900s Japan had a severe lack of natural resources. • Their plan was to invade and conquer neighboring lands that had the natural resources that they wanted. • Japanese expansion in East Asia began in 1931 with the invasion of Manchuria and continued in 1937 with a brutal attack on China. • On September 27, 1940, Japan signed a pact with Germany and Italy, thus entering the military alliance known as the “Axis Powers.” • The United States wanted to curb Japan Vs. the Japan’s aggressive actions. • They also wanted to force a United States withdrawal of Japanese forces from Manchuria and China. • So, the United States imposed economic sanctions on Japan. • Japan now faced severe shortages of oil, along with their shortage of other natural resources. • The Japanese were also driven by the ambition to displace the United States as the dominant Pacific power. • To solve these issues, Japan decided to attack the United States and British forces in Asia and seize the resources of Southeast Asia. Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor • However, because America is bigger and more powerful than Japan, a surprise assault is the only realistic way to defeat the U.S. • Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands on December 7, 1941. • When the first Japanese bombs struck Pearl Harbor shortly before eight in the morning, the American forces were utterly unprepared. • Anchored ships, such as the Nevada, the Utah, and the Arizona, provided easy targets for bombs and torpedoes.
