Tentative Itinerary

DAY 1 – Sat, Aug 6 - Depart Charlotte @ 6:10pm on American Airlines overnight direct flight to Dublin.

DAY 2 – Sun, Aug 7 - On arrival in Dublin we’ll be met by Owen Mohen, our knowledgeable and entertaining Irish driver/guide. The early arrival provides a full day to begin our Irish experience, taking in the culture, history, and music of The Emerald Isle. Ancient Ireland is a place of great antiquity, great fun and, you’ll discover, home to wonderful Irish hospitality. We stop for tea & scones before arriving in the lovely town of Trim in . Trim is perfectly picturesque and it’s no wonder the creators of the movie ‘Braveheart’ chose Trim and its surroundings as the location for their epic film. One look at Trim Castle’s stony outline against a dramatic Irish sky and images of valiant warriors and timid monks spring to life. We’ll tour Trim Castle before returning to our hotel for dinner this evening and our “Welcome to Ireland” music session. Overnight: Trim Castle Hotel, Trim (D)

DAY 3 – Mon, Aug 8 - After enjoying a full Irish breakfast we will embark on a tour of Co. Meath. With fascinating remnants of human inhabitation from 5000 years ago, the area is known as Royal Meath, a reference to the home of the high king of all four provinces of Ireland. The high king resided at Tara and we will visit that historic hill and learn of its significance. We’ll also see the Hill of Slane, where St Patrick himself lit the paschal fire, which assured him a visit to Tara where the pagan King of Ireland was soon converted to Christianity. Then it’s on to the ancient city of Drogheda where we’ll enjoy a walkabout to take in the sights. We’ll return to our hotel in Trim for the night. Overnight: Trim Castle Hotel, Trim (B, D)

DAY 4 – Tues, Aug 9 - Following breakfast, we make our way toward the western Atlantic coast and the beautiful town of Westport on Clew Bay. Along the way we’ll stop at the holy Marian shrine at Knock, where the Mother Mary is said to have appeared in August of 1879 to fifteen villagers, who each saw the “apparition”. This is a good place to light a candle. Following check in, we’ll enjoy time on your own to discover why The Irish Times in 2012 voted Westport “Best Place to Live” in Ireland. Tonight, we’re on our own for dinner and to catch the local music sessions in this lovely harbor town. Overnight: The Wyatt Hotel, Westport (B)

DAY 5 – Wed, Aug 10 - After a lively night on the town we’ll take a quiet morning today to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we travel to spectacular Achill Island where every turn reveals another “Kodak Moment”. We’ll see the Deserted Village, an archeological gem long since abandoned by the ancient people who once inhabited it. We’ll learn of the hard scrabble existence of the earliest inhabitants on this remote island. Then we’ll return to the hotel for fine dining and a fun-filled evening of music. Overnight: The Wyatt Hotel, Westport (B, D)

DAY 6 – Thurs, Aug 11 -. Today we travel south with Galway City in our sights but first a stop at the legendary Kylemore Abbey, a stunning lakeside property and the most photographed spot in Ireland. This former private residence (believe it or not), later served as an abbey, then a girl’s boarding school. There are formal gardens and a picture postcard setting not to be missed. We’ll arrive in Galway, City of Tribes - in time for a night of music and pubbing and good “craic” in this lively bohemian town. Overnight: Park House Hotel, Galway (B)

DAY 7 – Fri, Aug 12 -After breakfast, we’ll journey southward along the coast of Clare and stop for a refreshing walk along the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher that stand 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the scenery of Connemara and the Burren with photo stops along the way. We’ll stop for lunch in the picturesque town of Adare. It’s perhaps the prettiest little thatched roof cottage town you’ll find. Then on to the popular town of Killarney in time for a look about. We’ll have dinner at our hotel and another music session there. Overnight: Malton Hotel, Killarney (B, D)

DAY 8 – Sat, Aug 13 – Today, we’ll take a leisurely drive westward to see the famed . Adjacent to and much like the famed Ring of Kerry, it is no less stunning. One stop we’ll make is to see the sheep dog demonstration. It really is an amazing exhibition to see. Our return route through the Killarney National Forest is a beautiful drive with waterfalls, lakes, and mountains. We’re on our own tonight to explore one of the many lively pubs or restaurants of this very popular town. Overnight: Malton Hotel, Killarney (B)

DAY 9 – Sun, Aug 14 – Today, we’ll journey to Dublin City arriving with ample daylight to explore the Capital city this afternoon and into the night. We’ll visit the Guinness Storehouse upon arrival in the city. Tonight, we visit Temple Bar, which is the pub district right on the Liffey River and near our hotel. There is a “Temple Bar” there, but this entire visitor’s district bears that name. Overnight:Cassidys Hotel, Dublin (B)

DAY 10 – Mon, Aug 15 - Following breakfast you will enjoy a guided driving tour of this fascinating city, once occupied by the Vikings. Drive by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, final resting place of Jonathan Swift, as well as many other famous landmarks. One “must” stop will be Dublin Castle. Later, on your own, you can see the world-renowned 9th century Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript with meticulous artwork around the borders. When the tour concludes there will be time to visit sights such as the Old Jameson Distillery, Kilmainham Gaol, or perhaps a bit of shopping on Grafton Street. Final music session tonight at our hotel. Overnight: Cassidys Hotel, Dublin (B, D)

DAY 11 – Tue, Aug 16 – This morning, we’re away early to the Dublin Airport and bid a fond farewell to the Emerald Isle. Our return flight is direct to Charlotte.
