La A-League, como se le conoce, fue establecida por la FFA (Federación de Fútbol de Australia) para sustituir al anterior formato que había la NSL (National Soccer League). Es una liga cerrada, sin ascensos ni descensos, aunque se quiera adaptar en un futuro. Competición joven en constante crecimiento año tras año. Esta temporada se ha cambiado el formato de competición, con la llegada de un nuevo club a la liga profesional, (Western United), que será el número once. La temporada pasada fueron 10 equipos. Desde la temporada 2010-2011, la A-League no tenía 11 equipos. Se redujo a diez por desaparición de un equipo por motivos financieros. Actualmente la FFA quiere hacer una expansión a la A-League, pero sin que ocurra lo de años atrás. Entre los equipos que han solicitado la plaza hay clubes de nueva creación y equipos de la liga semiprofesional de Australia (NPL), un escalón por debajo de la A-League. En la temporada 2020-2021 está prevista que se una un equipo más a la A-League (Macarthur FC), para aumentar el número de equipos en la competición. El formato de competición La temporada 2019-2020 comenzará el 11 de Octubre. Esta temporada contará, como novedad, la presencia de 11 equipos y se deberá modificar el calendario con relación a la temporada pasada pasando de 27 a 29 jornadas. Los cambios más importantes serán estos: I. Esta nueva temporada 2019-2020 tendrá 29 jornadas. 26 partidos para cada equipo (13 de local y 13 de visitante). Con jornada de descanso en tres ocasiones para cada equipo a lo largo de la temporada. II. En los descansos tienen preferencia los equipos que vayan a jugar la AFC Champions League en función del calendario de dicha competición. III. Cada club jugará mínimo dos veces con cada rival. Y para cuadrar las 29 jornadas, 26 partidos cada club, se ha establecido un calendario asimétrico en el que cada equipo jugará tres veces contra seis rivales y solo dos con los otros cuatro. Estos seis partidos dependerán de varios factores. - Partidos donde se maximice las audiencias de TV. - Partidos con rivalidad histórica o de la misma ciudad. - Aquellos donde haya buena afluencia de público a los estadios. Lo único que no ha cambiado respecto a años anteriores es el play-off por el título. En la A- League hay posibilidad de ganar dos títulos. Por un lado la Premier League (Campeón temporada regular) y por otro el Campeón de la Gran Final (título A-League). El título de la A- League lo luchan los seis primeros clasificados, 1º y 2º esperan en semifinales, mientras que 3º juega contra el 6º y el 4º contra el 5º clasificado. Perth Glory con 60 puntos se alzó con el título de la temporada regular. Ha sido la primera vez en su historia que el equipo Occidental de Australia consigue ser primero en la clasificación de la A-League. Tony Popovic entrenador del Glory, lo conseguía por segunda vez. La primera fue con el Western Sydney Wanderers. En ambas ocasiones lo consiguió llegando nuevo al cargo de entrenador. Además de ser el equipo menos goleado con 23 goles fue el equipo más goleador de la temporada regular con 56 goles. Solo perdió en tres ocasiones de los 27 partidos disputados. Campeón de la Hyundai A-League Este título se consigue tras los play-off, eliminatorias que se juegan a final de la temporada regular entre los seis primeros clasificados. La temporada 2018-19 el campeón fue Sydney FC. Club que finalizó en segundo lugar en la temporada regular. Al quedar segundo solo tuvo que jugar dos partidos: semifinales donde ganó por un abultado 6-1 al Melbourne Victory y la final donde tuvo que enfrentarse al Perth Glory, partido el cual se decidiría en los penaltis tras el 0-0 inicial. Y algunas de las anécdotas y datos que nos han dejado estos tres lustros de fútbol profesional en Australia son estos: 1. El primer gol que se anotó lo marcó Carl Veart cuando jugaba en el Adelaide United. Tardó en llegar 19 minutos en su encuentro ante Newcastle Jets un 26 de Agosto del 2005. 2. Actualmente hay siete jugadores que aún siguen jugando en la A-League desde sus inicios. Nigel Boogard, Alex Wilkinson, Liam Reddy, Vince Lia, Glen Moss, Tarek Elrich y Andrew Durante. Este último es el jugador con más partidos de la historia de la competición de la A-League, con 313 apariciones. 3. El jugador máximo goleador en la competición es Besart Berisha con 106 goles en 171 partidos. 4. La mayor cantidad de goles que ha anotado un solo equipo en un partido ha sido de ochos goles. Adelaide United (temp 2010-2011), Wellington Phoenix (temp 2018-2019) y Newcastle Jets (temp 2017-2018) los que lo consiguieron. 5. Ernie Merrick es actualmente el entrenador que más partidos ha estado en los banquillos de algún equipo A-League. Ha entrenado a tres diferentes y actualmente sigue entrenando al Newcastle Jets, la próxima temporada será su temporada número 13. 6. Diego Castro, ex jugador del Getafe entre otros, es el jugador español que más goles de la historia de la A-League lleva en la actualidad con 39 goles. Esta temporada seguirá sumando goles en el Perth Glory. 7. Mientras que Isaías Sánchez que abandonó el Adelaide United la pasada temporada es el jugador español con más apariciones en la A-League con un total de 150 partidos, ha llegado a obtener la ciudadanía australiana por sus más de cinco años en el club del Sur de Australia. A total of 737 clubs entered the FFA Cup 2019, a number that has significantly grown from the first edition of the FFA Cup in 2014, when 617 clubs entered. The FFA Cup 2019 started in February with the Preliminary Rounds to determine the 21 clubs from the semi-professional and amateur tiers. These clubs joined ten of the Hyundai A-League clubs (Western United FC will not participate in this edition) and the reigning National Premier Leagues Champions (Campbelltown City SC) in the Final Rounds. The FFA Cup Final 2019 will be played on Wednesday 23 October with the host city to be determined by a live draw. Each cup tie must be decided on the day, with extra time to decide results of matches drawn after 90 minutes, followed by penalties if required. At least one Member Federation club is guaranteed to progress to the Semi Finals. Previous winners of the FFA Cup are Adelaide United (2014 and 2018), Melbourne Victory (2015), Melbourne City FC (2016) and Sydney FC (2017). Broadcast partners – FOX SPORTS FOX SPORTS will again provide comprehensive coverage of the FFA Cup 2019 Final Rounds. The FFA Cup’s official broadcaster will show one LIVE match per match night from the Round of 32 onwards, while providing coverage and updates, as well as live streams, of non-broadcast matches.
