Tour Summary

Our fantastic set of tours started in the Assamese capital, Guwahati. Our time there saw us visiting Kaziranga and Nameri National Parks, which delivered the goods with great sightings of mammals like Indian Rhinoceros, and some fantastic like the much sought-after White-winged . After our successful pre-tour extension, we ventured into the foothills of the mountainous Kingdom of Bhutan. Travelling west across this fantastic landscape allowed us to experience the proud culture of the Bhutanese people, as well as the incredible fauna and flora on offer there. With arguably some of the best birding in Asia, we had an incredible time. ______

Assam Extension

After meeting one another at our comfortable hotel in the busy Guwahati, we set out on our adventure through Assam, the far north-east state of . Our adventure started at the ‘scenic’ refuse disposal site – after all, no birding tour is complete without visiting a destination like this. The main target here was the increasingly rare . Habitat loss and overpopulation has caused this to drop drastically in numbers, and has forced them to seek out alternative feeding areas. The refuse disposal in Guwahati is now a stronghold for this species. Seeing many of them next to some Lesser Adjutants allowed for good comparison, and we also enjoyed many Black Kites, Great Myna and Striated Grassbird. Continuing out of the city, we made our way to Kaziranga National Park – a World Heritage Site. En route, we managed a great find in the form a Cinnamon . After enjoying a good lunch outside the western section of the park, we made our way in. Our first experience was a fantastic one, as we got close encounters with the first of many Indian Rhinoceros. Waterbirds were abundant and produced the likes of Black-necked , Indian Pond Heron, Eastern Cattle, Intermediate, Little and Great , Grey-headed and Red-wattled , Little Ringed , Green and Wood , Temminck’s Stint and both Common and Spotted Redshanks. Indian Rollers showed us some colour, as did Blue-bearded, Chestnut-headed and Blue- tailed Bee-eaters, and Blossom-headed, Red-breasted, Alexandrine and Rose- ringed Parakeets. A Dusky -Owl was a nice rare addition to close off the day.

We had an early start this morning, as we had our elephant ride planned. Seeing the park from a different perspective was great, as was being able to get closer to the wildlife. After a hearty breakfast, we made Greater Adjutant by Markus Lilje our way to the eastern section of the park.

Whilst driving through the tea plantations, we managed to find a pair of Spotted Owlets and many Green Imperial Pigeons. The eastern section of the park had some great expanses of water, and birds were abundant – including many migrants. Our first encounter was with a flock of Oriental Pied . Waterfowl were a big attraction here, and some good species included Bar-headed , , Cotton Pygmy Goose, , , , Indian Spot-billed Duck, , , and Tufted, Ferruginous and the sought-after Falcated . We had awesome looks at a pair of Great Hornbills on the nest, and a roosting Brown Fish Owl was a good one to get too. were also abundant and included Black-rumped, Grey-headed and Streak-throated. We made a quick stop at our local guide’s home, where he showed us the traditional way of life. Some tasty snacks prepared by his sister were also enjoyed. We followed up lunch with an outing to the central section of the park. Vultures were plentiful and included a single Slender-billed amongst many Himalayan. Both Pallas’s and Grey-headed Fish provided good views too. We spent some time getting good looks at Chestnut-capped and Striated Babblers creeping around the tall elephant grass, before it was time to head out of the park before closing time. Great by Andre Bernon

We started leaving the Kaziranga area this morning, taking our breakfast with us. Our first bit of birding was done in the Haldibari section of Kaziranga, with its steep forested slopes. A coral tree proved rather attractive to the birds, and we ticked off many Chestnut-tailed , Blue-throated and Blue-eared Barbets, Blue Whistling , Greater-necklaced Laughingthrush, Plaintive and Banded Bay and Tickell’s . After breakfast with a view, we started making our way to Nameri. Our rustic yet very enjoyable camp was to be home for the next two nights. After a welcome lunch, we made our way to the Jia Bhorelli River, where we set out on a rafting trip downstream. Our main target here was the fantastic and monotypic Ibisbill. We got superb and close-up looks before also getting good looks at Small and River . The surrounding woodland produced Vernal Hanging as well.

We had an early start this morning, Ibisbill by Markus Lilje with a surprise Great Slaty putting in a brief appearance at breakfast. We crossed the river once more, before going on a great hike through the Nameri Forest Reserve. Our main target here was the extremely rare White- winged Duck. We targeted a small forest pond, secluded in the shade of the massive trees. With no luck early on, we decided to give it a break and try again after an hour or two. We ticked off Small ,

Orange-bellied and Golden-fronted , Barred -Dove, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Velvet-fronted and Chestnut-bellied , Sultan and Slaty-backed Flycatcher in the meantime. Trying our luck at finding the duck once more, we reached the last pond and were extremely lucky to spot a single hiding in the overgrowth. We enjoyed distant yet extended looks before leaving this extremely rare bird in peace, and then made our way back to camp where we enjoyed a superb lunch. The afternoon saw some people heading back into the forest, and highlights included a tree full of Great Hornbills, Pale-chinned Blue Flycatcher, Rufous Woodpecker and a single . The others opted for a leisurely walk near our camp. This also proved successful, with excellent looks at a , Small and Rufous-bellied Niltavas, Spotted Owlet and Greater Flameback.

The last morning in Assam saw us enjoying a short walk around camp to try and locate Siberian Rubythroat by Shailesh Pinto some new species. First up was a stunning male Siberian Rubythroat accompanied by a female. Other new species were Thick-billed Warbler, Bengal Bush and fly-by Greylag Geese. We hit the road after breakfast and made our way to Samdrup Jonkhar, the Bhutanese town on the border. A great lunch at a local “dhaba” saw us on our way and through the border, where we met our Bhutanese hosts. We soon settled down for the evening, enjoying the experience of a new culture and a warm shower. ______

Birding the Buddhist Kingdom

Our main tour commenced with an early breakfast before we made our way out of town using the east- west highway. We spotted some good birds before lunch, which included Greater Racket-tailed , Greater-necklaced Laughingthrush, Wedge-tailed and Pin-tailed Green Pigeons, Rufescent Prinia, Puff- throated Babbler, White-rumped Shama, Dark-rumped and House Swifts, and Hill Myna. Near our ritualistic morning tea break, we found a great pair of Slaty-backed Forktails and more Rufescent Prinias. Our lunch area gave us Rufous-bellied Eagle before we carried on to some great forest near our first camping site, Morong. Some birds en route included Long-tailed Sibia, Great Barbet, Golden and Grey- throated Babblers, and Silver-eared Mesia. We also had fleeting glimpses of Scaly-breasted Cupwing, and Grey- cheeked and Black-faced Warblers before calling it a day.

The Morong camp was a superb location, and was to be our base for the next two nights. The main target in this area was Black-faced Warbler by Markus Lilje certainly the sought-after Beautiful

Nuthatch. This species didn’t disappoint, as we had great looks at four birds on our first morning here. They were seen in a flock consisting of , the ever-present Verditer Flycatcher, Small Niltava and Blyth’s -Babbler. Late morning produced a superb Pygmy Flycatcher in a flock of Yellow- throated Fulvetta and both Short-billed and Grey-chinned Minivets. The area above the campsite provided some new , including Blue-winged and Chestnut- crowned, as well as the glamorous Rufous- necked Hornbill. The areas around camp held Golden Bush Robin, Bhutan Laughingthrush, Rufous-breasted and, eventually, we all got onto the resident yet very shy Large -Cuckoo.

We then pushed onto Trashigang for a one- night stay. En route we had our first Crimson- breasted Woodpecker and Golden-naped , as well as the monotypic Wallcreeper! After lunch, we stopped to pay close attention to a large colony of bees on the Wallcreeper by Rich Lindie cliffs above the roadside. Our efforts paid off with exceptional looks at Yellow-rumped . were in flower and attracted the likes of Whiskered and White-naped Yuhinas. A surprise came in the form of a large flock of Tibetan Serins feeding off an elder tree. A small rice paddy nearby gave us our first Black-tailed Crakes, and some White-crested Laughingthrushes and Hodgson’s were feeding nearby. We reached Trashigang and enjoyed a great look over the valley and the Dzong nearby.

Moving out of the Trashigang region, we managed some Himalayan shortly after leaving. We spent a lot of time birding the Kore La Pass (2,429 m). Here, we had a great sighting of two Yellow- throated Martens! Birds included great-looking Fire-tailed Myzornis, Large Niltava, Yellow-billed Blue , Eurasian and beautiful Green-tailed . We had a nice walk through the town of Mongar, witnessing the Bhutanese way of life whilst ticking off Barn . Our next highlight was near the town of Lingmethang, where we tried our luck at a roosting spot for . We were in luck, as this bird was on exactly the same branch that it was on during our tours last year! Other birds in the area were Black-chinned, Whiskered and Striated Yuhinas, Chestnut-headed , White- throated and Grey . We then took on the windy roads through to Yongkhola, our base for the next three Black-tailed Crake by Rich Lindie nights.

Yongkhola is a great base from which to visit the fantastic and extensive Phrumsengla National Park. We spent a lot of time sifting through the many mixed flocks encountered here, as well as targeting some very habitat specific birds. Some highlights in this area included Himalayan Cutia, White-breasted and

Grey-headed Parrotbills, Grey-sided, Rufous-necked, Rufous-chinned and Striated Laughingthrushes, Rusty-cheeked, Coral-billed and Streak-breasted Scimitar Babblers, Rufous-fronted and Black-throated Bushtits, Alpine Thrush on migration, the outrageous Scarlet Finch, stunning Rufous-necked Hornbills and . Some cryptic species included Pygmy Cupwing, and Long-billed and Rufous- throated -Babblers. The Namling area (2,250 m) held some more specials, like the sought-after Ward’s Trogon, , Golden-breasted and White-browed Fulvettas, Black-throated Parrotbill and even Little Forktail. We even enjoyed a great night excursion here, which produced a quick female Hodgson’s Frogmouth, as well as the best views imaginable of Hodgson’s Giant Flying Squirrel!

From here, our next destination was past Namling, over Lathong La (2,744 m) and onto the small town of Sengor (2,950 m). Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler by Glen Valentine Lathong La produced some great birding around the flowering Rhododendrons, with us finding species like Fire-tailed Myzornis, Fire-tailed , Red-headed and Brown Bullfinches and Black-faced Laughingthrush. Situated in the alpine zone, Sengor was host to a whole different array of bird species. Of special mention here were Snow Pigeon, Spotted Laughingthrush, Red-billed , Himalayan Owl, Green Shrike-Babbler, White-collared Blackbird and a confiding Bar-winged Wren-Babbler. The Thrumshingla Pass (3,723 m), past Sengor, had some snow as a result of the late winter experienced this season. Here, we got many Blood , both White-browed and Rufous-breasted Bush Robins, White-throated , Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch, , Coal, Rufous-vented and Grey-crested Tits, and .

We moved over the Thrumshingla Pass and into the Bumthang Valley; having more good looks at some species seen before, like White-throated Redstart. The Ura Valley (3,071 m) produced a rare find in the form of a single Solitary , as well as both Red- throated and Black-throated Thrushes, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch, Plain Mountain Finch and the newly split Black- rumped Magpie. We eventually neared the town of Jakar, where the Chakar Chu River produced our first Ibisbill in Bhutan!

After a pleasant night’s stay, we filled our bellies with some Swiss cheese and made our way east. Some birding along the river White-throated Redstart by David Hoddinott gave us some good looks at Brown , as well as White-capped and Plumbeous Water Redstarts. Some retail therapy was in order in the small town of Chumey, before we continued onto Yatong La (3,410 m). Here, we got Mrs Gould’s Sunbird,

Hoary-throated Barwing, another and a Scaly Thrush that had been knocked by a vehicle. We then made our way, in the rain, to the historical capital – Trongsa. A visit to Bhutan’s largest Dzong was enjoyed in the afternoon. Our very comfortable hotel provided a very welcomed view of the Dzong, followed by dinner and recuperation before heading down for our last camping spot near Tingtibi in the Zhemgang district.

Tingtibi was much warmer than what we had been experiencing, since it is situated as low as 725 metres above sea level. Some birding in the forest below Trongsa gave us some great looks at Crimson- breasted Woodpecker, Fire-capped Tit, Crimson and Black-throated Sunbirds, Blyth’s and Black-eared Shrike-Babblers and a superb Broad-billed Warbler. Our tea-break also produced a stunning Grey- sided Bush Warbler. A perfect spot overlooking the Mangdue Chu River was our spot for lunch, before we ventured further down the valley. After ‘checking in’ to our campsite, we tried our luck at finding one of the world’s rarest birds – Mrs Gould’s Sunbird by Paul Ellis White-bellied Heron. We struck gold, spotting a single bird down the river, standing still and waiting for a tasty fish to swim close enough to become dinner. We rounded off the day with great looks at a pair of Common Green . A Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl haunted us during dinner. It proved to be just out of our reach on the other side of the river for the remainder of our stay here. The bamboo zone, inside Manas National Park on the edge of the Black Mountains, was the focus of a lot of our time. We got many new birds here, such as White-hooded Babbler, Pale-billed Parrotbill, Yellow-bellied and Rufous- faced Warblers, Common Emerald Dove, Barred Cuckoo-Dove, Pale-headed Woodpecker and both White-browed and Coral-billed Scimitar Babblers. A new mammal was also seen here, the Golden Langur.

Our last camping expedition had unfortunately come to an end, so we set out on our way back to Trongsa, taking the scenic way back via the town of Zhemgang. The birding was great, and provided us with good looks at Rufous Woodpecker, White-bellied Erpornis and Blue-winged Minla amongst the myriad species already seen. We eventually reached Trongsa for another one-night stay, ticking some confiding Spot-winged White-bellied Heron by Paul Ellis Starlings en route.

We then made our way to another historic capital, Punakha. En route we did some birding along Pele La (3,402 m) and found many Himalayan Vultures, Dark-breasted and Dark-rumped Rosefinches, Hoary-

throated Barwing and Fire-capped Tits. We said our goodbyes to our camping team and made our way down the pass towards the warmer Punakha Valley. As we reached the Puna Tshang Chu Valley, the effects of the recent weather system that devastated were quickly evident. Many migrants had been forced down into this valley to recuperate, and we even found a new bird for the country – . It was found in some scrub near Wangdue Phodrang, and was accompanied by Little , Bluethroat, , and a single .

The next morning, we visited the great Jigme Dorji National Park. Unfortunately, rain dampened the surroundings, but some did manage our first looks at the sought-after and monotypic Spotted Elachura. Other great birds here were a stunning Tawny Fish Owl sulking in the rain, Bay Woodpecker and Yellow-vented Warbler. We left the rain and made our way back to Punakha Golden Langurs by David Hoddinott for a great lunch. A short break was followed by a visit to one of Bhutan’s most visited tourist attractions – the fantastic Punakha Dzong. A stint along the river afterwards gave us a huge flock consisting of fifty- one Pallas’s with a single Caspian-type amongst them. Other birds here included Little Ringed Plover, Common and Green Sandpipers, Common and Ruddy Shelducks, Common Merganser and Great-crested .

We woke to a sunny morning and made our way back to the national park to try our luck at the Spotted Elachura again. We were unsuccessful. Afterwards, we went to the outskirts of town to look for Slender-billed Oriole; a range-restricted bird in Bhutan. We found a pair of these birds and had great looks before heading on. Dochu La was our next birding stop, and produced a great looking Scaly- breasted Cupwing, Brown-flanked Bush Warbler, Chestnut-crowned Warbler and a prized Spotted Elachura! We then visited the Royal Botanical Gardens and had a great time here spotting many birds, such as Rufous-bellied and Darjeeling Woodpeckers, Hill , Tawny Fish Owl by Glen Valentine Grey-sided Laughingthrush, Red-billed Leiothrix, Golden Bush Robin and Brown Parrotbill! We then reached , Bhutan’s capital city, and the only capital city in the world without a single traffic light! This evening was a special one, as we were treated to a fantastic dinner by our Bhutanese hosts, and it was special to meet some of the people that made all of this possible.

The time had come to leave the busy yet eye-pleasing Thimphu. Before we left, we made a quick visit to a monastery that breeds Bhutan’s national mammal, the Takin, and enjoyed great looks at this bizarre creature which is otherwise not seen by people. We made our way to Paro and had a great demonstration of a commercial plane landing at the infamous Paro International Airport. We eventually reached the world-renowned Tiger’s Nest and set off on our hike. This famous monastery is nestled high up on a sheer cliff-face, and it took us the remainder of the day to hike to and from. A great accomplishment by all!

Our last full day in Bhutan had unfortunately arrived, and sent us on our way at four in the morning! The reason was to locate our last pheasant species, and we needed to be there as light started to peek over the mountain tops. We struck gold, with absolutely amazing looks at a pair of Brown Parrotbill by Paul Ellis Himalayan . The male continued to feed at close quarters in perfect light, showing off the amazing shine in its plumage! Other good birds seen were White-winged Grosbeak, Himalayan Bluetail, Spotted and more Himalayan White-browed Rosefinches. The afternoon gave us some good looks at Black-tailed Crakes before we retired for the day, slowly winding down and getting ready for our travels back home after a fantastic experience to this unique part of the world!
