В оригинальном выпуске песни была строка where Slick Rick sneeringly sings the verse from the song Michelle (1965), but all subsequent reissues removed this line, as the rights to the song were never secured. Originally released as a single, the track was later remixed and included in 1986 Oh, My God! Album. The Show was named best rap single of the year, and in Europe (where it aired on pop stations such as BBC Radio 1) it broke the record for the best-selling rap single of all time. The song peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart in December 1985 and was #8 in Jet's top 20 in the same month. The recording was produced by Dennis Bell and Ollie Cotton for City Slicker Productions. While one critic for Spin in 1985 included the song on the list of stupid music - making fun of Doug E's words. Fresh about his shoes, and calling Slyk Rick's sending of Michelle pathetic - he still came to the conclusion that the single is crap. Billboard refused to take it seriously, declaring it the funniest comedy album of the year. Even when it became only the fourth rap single ever to reach gold album status, the same reviewer stated that it only proved that conversation is not always cheap. The song Legacy song was shown in New Jack City and CB4, but not in none of the movies. Chris Rock, who starred in both of these films, later slicked Rick to perform the song live to present his HBO special Bigger Bigger In response to the song's popularity, Herbie Azor and his female hip-hop band, Super Nature recorded a diss track called The Showstopper. Although not a hit in its own right, it became a breakout track for the band, which would later be known as Sol n Pepa. In 1985, another diss track called No Show by The Symbolic Three was released. The song was briefly selected in De La Soul's Oodles of O's from their 1991 album De La Soul Is Dead. Some lyrics of this song were interpolated by Snoop Doggy Dogg for the chorus of his 1996 song Sixx Minutes. In 1997, The Roots covered the song for the compilation album In tha Beginning... There was a rap. In 2013, the song was interpolated on Eminem's album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 on a track called Rap God. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

HIP-HOP’S DIVERSITY AND MISPERCEPTIONS by Andrew Cashman A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for a Degree with Honors (Anthropology) The Honors College University of Maine August 2020 Advisory Committee: Joline Blais, Associate Professor of New Media, Advisor Kreg Ettenger, Associate Professor of Anthropology Christine Beitl, Associate Professor of Anthropology Sharon Tisher, Lecturer, School of Economics and Honors Stuart Marrs, Professor of Music 2020 Andrew Cashman All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The misperception that hip-hop is a single entity that glorifies wealth and the selling of drugs, and promotes misogynistic attitudes towards women, as well as advocating gang violence is one that supports a mainstream perspective towards the marginalized.1 The prevalence of drug dealing and drug use is not a picture of inherent actions of members in the hip-hop community, but a reflection of economic opportunities that those in poverty see as a means towards living well. Some artists may glorify that, but other artists either decry it or offer it as a tragic reality. In hip-hop trends build off of music and music builds off of trends in a cyclical manner.
