Career Mission Statement and Realisation I strategically envisage to creatively bridge the apparent gap between academia and industry in the air transport and tourism sectors. I do so by usi ng an explicitly systemic and synthetic approach to address complexity in the business triangle formed by airlines, airport and tourism destination authorit ies. To realise this vision, I rely on five pillars, namely: I lecture at various academic levels a nd deliver executive courses of added value to senior and middle managers of airlines, airports and tourism destination authorities; I am a great advocate of blending learning methods combining onsite and online (both synchronous and asynchronous) dissemin ation of knowledge to provide an enhanced learner’s experience; I undertake research of high - quality standards (either alone or in collaboration with other academics and PhD candidates) with direct imp lications for air transport and tourism managers as wel l as policymakers at different levels; I participate in consortia bidding for research funding , I ac tively manage projects and I capitalise on consultancy opportunities in air transport and tourism; I engage into networking as keynote/invited speaker and p anellist in major international academic and industry conferences and fora; and I sit on the executi ve boards of academic societies and hopefully soon of air transport and tourism companies. All the a bove pillars are solidly founded on my continuously gro wing experience in research and scholarship; lecturing , supervising and curriculum design; enterpris e activities; as well as management and leadership. If you endorse, share, or just feel inspired by this vision, I am looking forward to working with you! Professor Dr Andr eas P apatheodorou – Extended Curriculum Vitae 4 2 . Printed in Croatia ISSN 1331-5609; UDC: 33+65 Urban Dipoles in Greece: Economic Development Opportunities for Larissa-Volos Dipole in Thessaly Region Theodore Metaxas* Abstract: The article attempts to illustrate the significance of the existence of co-operation and in tandem development of an urban dipole, as well as the impact of such a dipole development on each of the two cities and on the greater region they belong. For this reason, the article focuses on a specific case of two medium size cities in Greece, Larissa and Volos, which activate in the same region by taking development actions complementary to one another. The aim of the article is to define the prospects for economic development of this dipole and examine its dynamic in relation to other cities in Greece, by using original data derived by a recent empirical research conducted among foreign firms of the region which have established in the dipole area the last 15 years. Keywords: urban dipoles, economic development, Greece JEL Classification: R11, R12, R13 Introduction Cities are the most dynamic centres of economic transformations in a global level (Harris 1997). The main argument arises through the analysis of the international practice is that regional competitiveness / attractiveness presupposes the economic development and vigorousness of the regions main cities (Cheshire and Gordon 1998; Cuadrado-Roura and Rubalcaba- Bermejo, 1998; Cuadrado-Roura, 2001). This conclusion is harmonized with the basic principles for the competition between cities, as they referred in the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP, 1999).
