The sense of loss and loneliness can be even more poignant at this time of year. Chas A Nethercott & Son Ltd would like to offer any relative or friend the opportunity to place a card with a personal message on their memory tree. In the past many of the families we have helped through the year have found this simple act of remembrance a source of comfort. This year Nethercotts are offering this service to all bereaved people in Potters Bar and surrounding area, as a way to express their feelings in a tangible manner. The tree will be displayed in the window of their office in Darkes Lane, Potters Bar from the beginning of December until the end of the Christmas period. For every loved one remembered in this way the company will, as last year, donate £2.00 to charity. This year, the directors have chosen to support Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Noah’s Ark currently supports over 160 children who are seriously unwell, 230 of their siblings and 350 of their parents/guardians. Their dedicated team do this by providing holistic, bespoke care. However, they want to provide more care for more children and their families across North and Central London. The Ark is in the process of being constructed. This will be a state of the art, specialist children’s hospice building and community hub for families. The Ark will be set on a 7.5 acre nature reserve and be a home- from-home for children who are seriously unwell, where they will be given the time and space to be children and not just patients. It will provide an inspiring space for relaxation, adventure and for children and their families to connect with others facing similar challenges. If you would like to help us raise money for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, then memory cards can be collected from Nethercott’s at 150 Darkes Lane, Potters Bar from Thursday 1st November 2018 onwards. Together lets help Noah’s Ark build The Ark.

One of these grants of £15,000 has been awarded to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice based in Barnet, to support their drama and music therapy sessions for 65 seriously ill children with complex individual needs in their own home, hospital or the community. Music Therapy aims to provide children and young people with an improved sense of self and their relationship with others. Noah’s Ark Music Therapists are trained to interpret physical and emotional cues and turn them into music which can be experienced together. The sessions are used to support development goals, and help children process feelings, emotions and experiences. Noah’s Ark Drama and Movement Therapy encourages exploration of feelings and thoughts. Drama and Movement Therapist, Amy Keenan, says: “Drama and play is a natural language and form of self-exploration and expression. For our children, verbal and non-verbal techniques such as role play, puppets and masks with stories can aid and support children through their development and emotional wellbeing.” The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation funding is supporting projects across the UK, from London to Glasgow, as well as further afield in New York. Breaking down barriers to participation in the arts, the Foundation has prioritized projects that engage young people. There are also toilets and a small I started out at the constituency office in Hatfield chatting with Grant’s kitchen. office manager over a range of topics before we were joined by Individual membership costs £20 per year and there are other terms for Grant’s PA, Kat, who doubled as our driver, and then soon the man teams and functions. There are additional small charges per booking himself. He is very personable and easy company – something I (eg £1per hour for the snooker room). already knew having already met him in a social environment. Enquiries should be addressed to the Secretary at 7 Northaw Road West, Grant is promoting an initiative ‘Better Healthcare Locally’ and is Northaw, EN6 4NW, by email to [email protected] or by meeting all the GP practices in the constituency. The practice we phone to 07725 430244. visited was being frustrated by bureaucracy from moving into new premises already owned by the NHS. Grant promised to take it up with the new Health Minister. Often, the intervention of an MP can unblock seemingly intractable blockages in the system. This was followed by a presentation to a retiring teacher at Monks Wood School. A brief chat with the trustees beforehand was informative. Grant made a short, off-the-cuff speech and chatted to pupils and staff. Next, Kings Community Church in Hatfield based in the old town hall offices. Grant spotted a man dropping a piece of litter and called out to him. The guy looked up surprised and retraced his steps. I don’t know if he regularly does this. We had a quick lunch in Simmons whilst remarking on the transformation in the shopping area. We discussed national matters and Grant talked about other projects. The following day a report was issued on Smart Meters and was followed by an op-ed piece in The Sun. Then came photos for the ‘Better Britain Shops Award’ taken with members of Welwyn Hatfield Council and a member of the public buttonholed him for a quick chat. We then returned to the office for a meeting with the founders of Defibrillators in Public Places Charity (DiPPs). As part of the meeting they took us through how a defibrillator is used. The key query here being, whether a way could be found to avoid VAT being payable. The final visit was to the new Tesco HQ at Shire Park where we were able to taste some new products. Kat remarked that Grant has a high workload and rarely switches off. He listens to music while he works, has a Private Pilots Licence and flies himself around where feasible. Unsurprisingly, he is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Aviation. It was a very interesting and informative day.
