  • Disney's NEWSIES to Take SHS Stage
Disney’s NEWSIES to take SHS Stage Students at SHS are hard at work preparing this year’s spring musical, Newsies. The show will be presented in the SHS auditorium on March 12-14 and 19-21 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 1 p.m. Adult tickets are $7 and student and senior (60+) tickets are $5. All tickets are reserved seating only and go on sale at the SHS Box Office on February 20. Box office hours will be 8-11 a.m. weekdays or by phone/voicemail (anytime) at 715-635-0210. Messages can also be left by emailing [email protected] Newsies is rich with history still relevant today. Set in turn-of-the Nineteenth Century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).

  • Newsies Role Descriptions
Newsies Role Descriptions About the accents: Students who watch the movie or listen to the Broadway soundtrack will notice that many characters speak with a New York accent. Actors are welcome to use an accent when they audition, but it is not required. Because the characters in the story can be portrayed as coming from a variety of places in America and beyond, we will decide on each character’s “voice” (including accent) for performance once the roles are cast. About role genders: You will notice that many roles are listed as “male OR female playing male.” The lead roles in this show are overwhelmingly male characters. Because this story is based on an actual historical event, and nearly all newsies were male, we will still be costuming all newsies as “boys,” but most roles (as noted below) are available for performers of any gender. THE NEWSIES JACK KELLY Male, sings solo, many lines, some dancing, stage combat The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an oprhaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his friends and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability. DAVEY male OR female playing male, sings solo, many lines, some dance Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike.

A story of kids taking a stand for their rights against all odds. This musical, with all it’s fun dance numbers and upbeat music, is based on a real life strike that New York’s newsboys had so that they might be treated fairly after a devas- tating war. This show encapsulated that even though you’re young you can still change the world for the better. It’s a show full of grit, heart and the power of our youths’ voices. A truly inspiring tale that still speaks to what our minimum wage workers are still fighting for today, in a fast paced musical package. MIKAYLA SCRAMSTAD Ignite Theatre Director PRODUCER’S MESSAGE At long last, Ignite Theatre is proud to bring to you our recorded live streams of Disney’s NEWSIES, June 18th - 20th. Two years in the making and after a valiant attempt to film our production in a Low- er Mainland theatre this spring to no avail [due to continuing Covid restrictions], we were finally able to bring the theatre to us! Thank you to Wild Coast Productions for creating a box theatre in our gym where we rehearse all year long, which allows us to take you back in time to turn-of-the-century New York City, with Disney’s Newsies.
