Overseas Expert Column by Wally Pyrah Followers of statistics will look no further for the winner than either the Richard Hannon trained NIGHT OF THUNDER or French challenger CHARM SPIRIT. Three-year-olds have provided 20 of the last 29 winners of this race, and seven had previously won the English G1 2000 Guineas over 1,600m at Newmarket. This augurs well for the chances of NIGHT OF THUNDER who won the first English classic of the season back in May – became the only horse ever to defeat the highly-rated KINGMAN – with rival CHARM SPIRIT back in fifth place, beaten four lengths. CHARM SPIRIT narrowly gained his revenge over his rival when winning the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp over 1,600m recently, but the tougher Ascot 1,600m track will be in favour of NIGHT OF THUNDER on this occasion. NIGHT OF THUNDER will also appreciate the probable desperate ground conditions, being a son of DUBAWI – his offspring always excel on soft ground – and having an unblemished record of two wins from two runs when conditions have been soft. Trainer Sir Michael Stoute saddles his stable star INTEGRAL, a filly who has progressed throughout the season. She never looked like getting beaten when dictating the tempo and quickening away from her rivals in the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes over 1,600m at Newmarket a fortnight ago and on that form must enter calculations. A word of warning though. Stoute trained the last filly to win this race back in 1987, and four-year-olds have a poor record – only one winner from the last 23 runners. With ground conditions likely to be a big factor in this contest, highly progressive CUSTOM CUT – seeking his sixth successive victory – will prove popular, having outstayed rival CAPTAIN CAT over 1,600m in a G2 event at Newmarket last month. He boasts a record of ten wins in his career, seven of which were on either soft or heavy ground. A similar comment with regards underfoot conditions, can be made about TOP NOTCH TONTO who loves to get his toes into the ground. This four-year-old caused a surprise when finishing runner-up to OLYMPIC GLORY in this event last season, and recent efforts, notably when runner-up in a red-hot handicap at York, and finishing fourth to BOW CREEK in a G2 event over 1,600m at Leopardstown, suggests he is nearing his best again. It is interesting that Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien relies on KINGSBARNS, a horse that has failed to recapture his early two-year-old form which saw him win the G1 Racing Post Trophy over 1,600m at Doncaster on very soft ground. He did however run well in this event last season when third to OLYMPIC GLORY and TOP NOTCH TONTO, and warmed up for this race again when running over a distance too far, and finishing fifth to RULER OF THE WORLD in the G2 Prix Foy over 2,400m at Longchamp last month. This soft ground specialist shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. BRENDAN BRACKAN Showed very smart form when winning handicap and Group 3 in 2013 and has held form well this time around, winning listed race at Cork in August (1m, soft ground) and close second in Group 3 at Tipperary last time. Much more needed up at this level, however. 2. CAPTAIN CAT Has made giant strides this year, his three wins including Group 3s at Salisbury and Haydock, and supplemented for this race (for £70,000) after finishing second to Custom Cut in the Group 2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket. Work to do to reverse form with that rival though having let himself down with his finishing effort that day, and really testing ground would be an unknown (acts on good to firm and good to soft). 3. CUSTOM CUT Has excelled year after switching to David O’Meara, winning his last five starts in determined fashion, including the Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown and Strensall Stakes (9f) at York in August and Joel Stakes (beat Captain Cat by two and a half lengths) at Newmarket in September. More needed again to land this but clearly in the form of his life (has been supplemented) and acts on heavy ground, so makes the shortlist. 4. GRAPHIC Has won six of last eleven starts, the latest a Group 3 in France in early-July, but well held at that level back on home soil since. Needs the return to testing conditions (won on heavy going) to spark plenty of improvement. 5. KINGSBARNS Won 2012 Racing Post Trophy and, having missed most of the following season finished a very encouraging four lengths third to Olympic Glory in this race. Not matched that form in three starts this time around (including over 1m on testing ground) however, and bit to prove. 6. TOP NOTCH TONTO Rose through the handicap ranks for new yard last term, and ended the campaign with a three and a quarter lengths second in this race. Close to matching the pick of 2013 form when head second to Short Squeeze in valuable handicap at York on penultimate start (almost as good when fourth to Bow Creek in Ireland last time), and should be suited by return to testing conditions, so holds each-way claims. 7. TULLIUS Very smart performer in 2012 and, having raced just three times in 2013, has taken form to next level this term with win in Group 2 Sandown Mile (heavy ground) in April and in-frame efforts in Lockinge, Queen Anne and Joel Stakes (encouraging fourth after three months off) since. Two and a half lengths to make up on Toronado from Royal Ascot race, but could well get much closer now back on soft ground (all wins since maiden success on good ground or softer). 8. CHARM SPIRIT Only defeat in five starts in 2014 came in 2000 Guineas (fifth) and since added Group 3 at Chantilly, Prix Jean Prat there (beat promoted Shifting Power on good to soft ground) and Prix du Moulin at Longchamp (beat Toronado and Night of Thunder in tight finish on good to firm) to his tally. Only just does enough—all wins this year by less than length—so could have even more to offer, though testing ground is an unknown. 9. INTEGRAL Smart form when successful on three of her last four starts, namely in Duke of Cambridge at Royal Meeting here, Falmouth on July course at Newmarket (beat Rizeena two lengths) and Sun Chariot on Rowley course there (made all by length from Miss France). May have even more to offer and Falmouth win came on good to soft ground, but any worse would be a concern as all other outings have come on good or firmer (and dam disappointed only start on soft). 10. NIGHT OF THUNDER Caused a 40/1 upset when winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket (by half a length from Kingman) in May either side of being beaten by that rival in the Greenham and St James’s Palace Stakes, and bounced back from non-staying effort in the Eclipse when close third to Charm Spirit in Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.
