New Orleans PFLAG Receives Support Award FLAG National is proud to an- nounce that the New Orleans Pchapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) has been awarded the 2007 Chap- ter Award for their outstanding achieve- ments in advocacy on behalf of gay, les- bian, bisexual, transgender and straight ally (GLBTA) support. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, PFLAG New Orleans was able to re- emerge and continue providing support to a community in need. With the help of PFLAGers around the nation they replaced vital equipment and rebuilt the chapter even as many other nonprofit organiza- tions in the area shut down. “That this chapter was able to survive - and even thrive - and continue to support their community is absolutely amazing,” says Jody M. Huckaby, Executive Director of PFLAG National. “I am pleased to present them with this much-deserved Support award that is recognition from all PFLAGers for their great work.” Their accomplishments allowed them to do outstanding work in the face of disaster. They continued to provide tradi- tional PFLAG support to families in need. Members also successfully forged ahead with their scholarship program, support- ing 18 GLBT students seeking aid in pay- ing for their higher education. Chapter members also sponsored their 5th An- nual New Orleans GLBT Prom. Their work wasn’t just focused on PFLAG, however. In addition to their activi- ties, PFLAG New Orleans also extended its support work far into the community by joining with 14 other nonprofit organiza- tions to form the Greater New Orleans Community Coalition in the effort to re- build the city. “Our chapter knows that we have to support our entire community,” said PFLAG New Orleans chapter president, Julie Thompson. “As a founding member of our Community Coalition, we know when everyone’s events are, and we are there for them.” Chapters were nominated by PFLAG dynamic regions through events celebrat- ana Department of Culture, Recreation prints of a special Louisiana culture guide members and winners were selected by ing its history, cuisine, art and more. and Tourism, said the state also offers the which ran in the May issue of Smithsonian the National Awards Committee.
