Query approximation in the case of incompletely aligned datasets Ana I. Clouds of Linked Open Data about the same domain pro- mote the formulation of a query over a source dataset and then try to process the same query over different target datasets, one after another, in order to obtain a broader set of answers. However, heterogeneity of vocabularies used in the datasets and the scarce number of alignments among those datasets makes that querying task extremely difficult. This paper presents a proposal that allows on demand transformations of queries by using a set of transformation rules that are able to rewrite a query formulated over a source dataset into another query adequate for a target dataset, which approximates the original one. The approach relieves users from knowing the vocabulary used in the targeted datasets and even more it considers situations where alignments do not exist or they are not suitable for the formulated query. Therefore, in order to favor the possibility of getting answers, sometimes there is no guaran- tee of obtaining a semantically equivalent translation. Experiments with benchmark queries validate the feasibility of the proposal. 1 Introduction So called Web of Data can be considered one of the major global reposito- ries in which the number of available linked datasets is continuously increasing, mainly promoted by initiatives such as Linked Open Data, Open Government and Linked Life Data. As a result a growing number of Linked Open Data sources (from diverse provenance and about different domains) are made available which can be freely browsed and searched to find and extract useful information. -

Saturday, July 6, 2002 Her Family Grown, Jill Clayburgh Is Starting Over Page: 1 July 7, 2002 Her Family Grown, Jill Clayburgh Is Starting Over By JENNET CONANT ÊWOMAN came up to me after one of the screenings the other day with tears pouring down her face and sobbed, 'My God, you've defined my entire life for me on the screen,' " said Jill Clayburgh, shaking her head with the wide-eyed look of amazement that has been her trademark since her breakout role in Paul Mazursky's 1978 hit, "An Unmarried Woman." "I don't exactly know why, but people always seem to see echoes of their own lives in my films. They really feel for me." It's about to get worse. Audiences who identified with Ms. Clayburgh's hilariously neurotic New York divorc*e in "An Unmarried Woman," and rooted for her as the mousy school teacher who has to compete with Candice Bergen to win Burt Reynolds's affections in Alan Pakula's 1979 romantic comedy "Starting Over," will find it hard not to share her pain at the prospect of re-entering the dating scene at middle age in "Never Again," which opens on Friday in New York and Los Angeles and in other cities July 19. Ms. Clayburgh, who earned consecutive best-actress Oscar nominations for those early star turns, admits the appeal of doing another romantic comedy is that it completes a kind of cinematic triptych, bringing back her familiar discombobulated but determined heroine. When her character loses it in an early scene in "Never Again" Ñ humiliating herself and embarrassing those around her Ñ it is an instant reminder that few actresses play single, emotionally frayed women as well as she does. -

This controversial cycle, which was initiated by the success of films like Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society, participated in the period’s broad cultural debates about race, class, crime and youth. As film cycles are strongly shaped by audience desire, financial viability, current events and studio whims, I argue that they retain the marks of their historical, socioeconomic and generic contexts more precisely than genres, which, because of their longevity and heterogeneity, can be unwieldy objects of study. -

Specifically, the project evaluates women’s labor in the cinematic paradigm of second wave exploitation films—films produced under the exploitation style from 1960 to 1980—and utilizes a case study of director Stephanie Rothman to articulate the lack of industrial, disciplinary, and archival attention paid to women’s directorial labor and the reverberations of this absence on gendered labor parity in the contemporary film industry. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation would not be possible without the unfailing support of my doctoral committee. Capino Professor Jinsoo An, University of California at Berkeley ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on cinematic representations of prostitute women in South Korean Hostess (ho-sŭ-t'e-sŭ’: a euphemism for prostitutes or bar girls in the Korean context of the 1970s and 1980s) films. This body of films is not only characterized for the exploitive employment of female sexuality but more importantly for the theme of women’s extreme and perpetual sacrificial. Previous South Korean film scholarship has argued that the Park’s state censorship operation critically influenced the formation and thriving of these hostess films, because the state censors condoned sexual materials in films to drive away the public attention from politics as well as to please producers and directors who were increasingly becoming critical with strict military censorship (Chung, H.,2005; Yu, S.,2004; Kim, S.,2000; Park, J.,2008). While this scholarly account seems to be coherent that the genre is affected by the force of the state censorship, it does not fully explain how these films of, particularly, ‘prostitutes’ and their recurring theme of female sacrifice were constructed and canonized. My dissertation necessarily delves into this detail because hostess films were pioneered and thrived by some key directors of the 1970s.
