COQUILLE — High school seniors have a new reason to be careful about their sexual choices: jail. An 18-year-old Coquille man spent part of the weekend at the Coos County jail after police caught him having consensual sex with his 17- year-old girlfriend early Sunday. A Coquille police officer spotted the couple having sex in a car at a park behind a local school. The man was arrested around 2:20 a.m. and was released around 11 a.m. Monday on his own recognizance. Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier said his office will decline to file charges because the man was within three years of age to the girl. I spend a good deal of time in Coos County for my job, and I’ve worked with Ms. Cribbins for many years. I have seen her repeatedly demonstrate her compassion and her smarts for problem solving. Her work in the juvenile court system has given her a unique insight and understanding into the issues and challenges facing some of our most vulnerable citizens — abused and neglected children. In her work for the Coquille Indian Tribe, she has demonstrated a unique ability to work through complex governmental issues and present clear, common-sense solutions. It sharply increases pressure on political groups from Bahrain’s Shiite Muslim majority, which has led the protests seeking a greater political voice in the Sunni Muslim-ruled nation. Tougher steps against opposition groups could raise complications for Washing- ton and other Western allies that have stood by Bahrain’s monarchy during more than 20 months of unrest. The U.S. has important military bonds with Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, but it also has called for increased efforts at dialogue to ease the tensions. Shiites comprise about 70 percent of Bahrain’s 525,000 citizens, but claim they face systematic discrimination such as being denied top political and security posts. The Sunni monarchy has made a series of concessions but opposition groups say the reforms do little to loosen the ruling family’s hold on power.

What’s your opinion? Assignment: Should kids be allowed to vote? Why or why not?

Kristina., a student at Hillcrest Elementary School, North Bend, will receive a prize for her sub- mission on this topic: First, kids would be more interest in our coun- try. Second, more kids would watch the news. Third, kids would most likely know what’s going on in our country. Lastly, teachers would be able to talk about the election and they would know what their teacher is talking about. That is why I think kids shold vote. HILLCREST ELEMENTARY Fourth grade

Kids should never, not in a mil- lions years should a kid be able to vote. First of all we are to young to vote. Kids don’t know enough about the presidents. Some kids might not no what the president is going to do to the country. Most good kids might vote somebody in for good looks. (Sound like me.) Now I have gave you for reasons to not let a kid vote! Now I want to vote. Cutter Yes kids should be able to vote Most kids have enough knowledge to vote. Like the kids in my school they’re smart enough to vote. Shouldn’t kids have a saying too. We all want to vote who is president, or we want to vote on new laws. Let us vote too. Voting ages should at least be to 9 years old so they at least understand. We know what voting is. Most of us don’t care if our vote doesn’t get picked. Lots of people think kids should have a saying too. Kylie Hall yes kids should be allowed to vote! Kids should be allowed to vote so they can have the presedent they love and want. Kids should be allowed to vote because parent can vote. Kids should be allowed to vote because kids have the best apinyon. Kids should be allowed to vote becaus they have the best tast. Kyley C. Yes, kids should be able to vote. Kids should be able to vote because there will be more voters. Another reason kids should be able to vote is kids study about the president. Also, since they study about an unknown president has better chances on win- ning. the last reason kids should vote is kids are awesome that is why kids should be able to vote for president. Dylan No, kids shouldn’t be allowed to vote. We don’t know who to vote for. We can’t just guess because we might choose a bad president. Kids can’t vote because the would beed to know every bit about voting. They would have to know all about the president they are voting for. Abby Brown No kids shouldn’t be able to vote First, Why I think is because they might pick the wrong guy. Second, They might not under stand. third, They might get made fun of for pick- ing that guy. Lastly, They might get made fun of by thier friends. That’s why I think kids can’t vote. Coleman I really think don’t teens should vote! One they may not know enough about the candidates. Also, they may not be smart enough to vote. Som do not understand the high priviledges of voting. Lastly teen’s are to wild these day’s to be let to vote. That’s why I think teen’s shouldn’t vote! Liam Kids should not be allowed to vote! The first reason is because they are too young. The second reason is because they don’t have enough knowledge. The last reason is because they are not experienced enough. I hope kids will never be allowed to vote! Samantha Sherman No kids should not be allowed to vote. They should vote because they are too young. Also, they do not know eough. It would be to much work, also! Lastly the do not know any- thing about it. I do not think kids should be alowd to vote. Ashley Kids shouldn’t be allowed to vote. First of all they are to young. Also, there’s too much to remember. Another reason is they don’t like pol- itics. Lastly, they don’t like voting. I think kids shouldn’t be allowed to vote! Daylen Yes kids should be allowed to vote. The age limit should be ten and older. Some kids like some presi- dents. We kids should be able to pick which president we like. It’s not fair that just teens and adults should be allowed to vote. If I was allowed to vote, I’d vote for Obama my self. Sebastian

Contributed Photos by Katherine Randall Dan and Katherine Randall, Coos Bay residents, recently enjoyed a trans-Atlantic cruise on the Emerald Princess. One of the stops was in Scotland. One picture shows Dan outside Waxy O’Connors Pub in downtown Glasgow. There they had a pub lunch of “Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties,”with whisky gravy and Scottish oat bread (below). Translation: A hash of miscel- laneous sheep parts, with mashed sweet and white potatoes. Of course, this was accompanied with a fine Scottish ale. It was a tasty traditional Scottish meal that was reasonably priced and thoroughly enjoyed.

I am a huge fan of the Internet, for thousands of reasons. And right up there at the top: reviews. However, if there are 27 reviews averaging 4-stars plus the one you think might be bogus, that’s a rec- ommendation you should take seriously.
