The Life of George Brooks Artist in Stone by Juanita Brooks 1965 Chapter 1 BACKGROUND AND EARLY LIFE For ages the rocky promitory on the north extremity of Wales has jutted out into the sea, to be known by the early inhabitants of the area as “The Point of Ayr.” Surrounded on three sides by water, with a low, gravelly beach at low tide, it became inundated up to several feet at high tide, and a boiling, foaming torrent in storms. It was such a hazard to seafaring men that by 1700 it was marked with a small lighthouse, erected for and supported by the merchants of Chester, far down at the end of the bay, As the city of Liverpool grew in importance, this danger spot became their concern also, for their commerce was constantly threatened by the submerged rocks. During the summer of 1963, the author, her husband, William Brooks, and her daughter, Mrs. Thales A. Derrick, visited the lighthouse here at the point of Ayr and became acquainted with a man who gave them the address of the present owner of the property, Mr. H. F. Lewis. In a letter dated August 27, 1963, he said: “. The Elder Brethren of Trinity House, who did not like privately owned lighthouses, heard of the defaulting of the Port of Chester Authority & petitioned the King in 1815 to have the jurisdiction of the L. H. Placed under their auspices. This was granted by King George III. I have this document as the first of the L. H. Deeds . “Originally the keeper lived ashore at the house still known as the Lighthouse cottage.

Local Matchups Friday LIU at Hofstra, 7:00: After LIU’s fabulous run to the NCAA Tournament last, the Blackbirds have become one of the hottest programs in the NY Metro area. With six of its top eight players back, led by junior forward Julian Boyd the Blackbirds could he a handful for Hofstra. As for the Pride, Mo Cassara’s group could be one of the most underrated in the area. Sure, Charles Jenkins and Greg Washington are gone, but Mike Moore, David Imes, Stevie Mejia, Nathaniel Lester and Shemiye McLendon are all experienced players. It should be a good one in Hempstead. Stony Brook at Indiana, 7:00: Stony Brook and its followers have waited an entire off season for this matchup. With so much talent back and several newcomers expected to create an immediate impact, no one would be shocked to see the Seawolves win this game. Senior guard Bryan Dougher, redshirt junior forward Tommy Brenton and senior Dallis Joyner have been the key elements to Stony Brook’s rise. The Seawolves have had winning seasons two of the last three years and have finished .500 or better in the America East the last three years.

  • BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL
2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL A MESSAGE TO TECH SUPPORTERS This is a very exciting time for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. We look forward to a season that will bring in new faces and new challenges. It should be a season of excitement and of improvement. The thing I have noticed about this group through the summer and the preseason is their willingness to work. I stated often last season that I never had to coach effort and this season, that same spirit has been evident since day one. This group of players shows up ready to do their best, regardless of whether it’s on the court, in the weight room or in the classroom. They are always ready to take a step forward. During the last year, we have made very substantial strides in shaping this program into a group that makes this University proud. We have become more involved in campus and community projects and have comported ourselves in a manner expected of Virginia Tech students and student-athletes. We strive to make this team YOUR team. It has meant so much to the team and me that you stop us on the street, in restaurants and out in public and greet us all so warmly. I believe this partnership has gotten off to a wonderful start and will only grow stronger. The season will begin on Nov. 9 and we will need each and every one of you in Cassell Coliseum, supporting this team.
