UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA B.Summary of The Novel

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

Literature is a form and result of creative art work whose object is human and life which is delivered using language as its medium. Semi (1998: 8) In other words, a literary work contains various ideas, theories, thoughts and expressions of feelings. This whole aspect comes from its author who has an important role in literature created to entertain and benefit people.

Entertaining means giving a positive pleasure that can enrich the spiritual, while useful is able to make humans wiser in the face of life.

One form of literature is novel. Novel is the result of the imagination of the author. In the novel, an author can pour the life of a character in terms of physical, spiritual, and psychological in accordance with the wishes of the author.

There are several elements of the novel builder that determines the storyline, one element is main characters . In this case Semi (1993: 83) states that the reader will know the picture of the character and philosophy of life of his character through the existing characters. Different characters of each character that will affect the story path. Semi (1993: 34) also states that the character is a central idea from beginning to end of a story. Furthermore, Tarigan (1984: 149) suggests that in order to display the characters in a story, the best way is through actions. It is also said by Suharianto (1982:31) that it is through characterization that the reader can clearly capture the human form of his life which is told by the author.

Main characters in a novel is very important, because through the character is the story begins, walks, and also ends. The flow of a story travel can not be separated from the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA characters in the story. The more interesting the characters in a story, it will also attract the story.

The character of a unique and interesting character can be seen for example in the novel

"The Fault in our Stars" in the novel is about Hazel Grace [] is a 16-year- old teenager who suffered from thyroid cancer since the age of 13 years. Cancer that has been in staduim 4 and increasingly spread to the lungs make this girl hard to breathe so must use respiratory aids in the form of hoses and tubes. It is also a burden to Hazel, because he must always take him wherever he goes. One day, met for children with cancer, Hazel meets a man named Augustus Waters [] who also has cancer. In contrast to the cancer Hazel suffered, this 17-year-old man suffered from osteosarcoma cancer which made him lose a leg.

August, good-looking, always carrying positive energy makes Hazel fall in love with him, and vice versa. Augustus also loves Hazel. The existence of Hazel is severe, making himself not confident to love Augustus, But this handsome man still trying to make Hazel fall in love with her. Augustus always made surprises in his encounter with Hazel. At one point Augustus made a surprise that Hazel was so incredulous. Augustus will take Hazel to Amsterdam to meet with Hazel's favorite author, An Imperial Affliction, named Van Houten. The surprise came to an abrupt halt when the author was not being nice to Augustus and Hazel who had come all the way to Amsterdam. They were disappointed. Incredible events occurred in

Amsterdam. Hazel and Augustust formalize their relationship in the midst of their severe illness. Hazel and Augustus strive to please each other so as to make their days more excited.

Such beautiful happiness unfortunately did not last long. Augustus left Hazel for good.

Novel The Fault in our Stars by John Green is an interesting novel to discuss. The uniqueness of the characters in this novel encourages the writer to discuss the novel more deeply.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1.2 The Problem of the Study

Based on the background of this proposal, the problem of this study is how are the main characters potrayed in The Fault in Our Stars novel .

1.3 The Scope of the Study

There are many aspects can be discussed in this novel, but the writer is interested to focuse finding out of the main characters of Hazel Grace, Augustus Waters and Peter Van

Houten in novel The Fault in Our Stars.

1.4 The Objective of the Study

The object of the study is to know and to describe how are the main characters potrayed

in Jhon Green Novel The Fault in Our Stars.

1.5 The Method of the Study

The writer uses the work of the library method (Library Research) that is by collecting data and read the whole novel to understand the contents of the novel. Then, the writer reads literature books and browses data from internet to support the writer’s idea of the related topic of this paper. The final steps are sorting out the data have been collected and analyze them.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Novel

Novel is basically a story in which it is contained purpose to provide entertainment to readers. As said Burhan ( 2005: 3) Reading the work of fiction is enjoying the story, entertaining itself to gain satisfaction inner. are expressions and images of human life in an age that is faced with various complex life problems can give birth to a conflict and a dispute. Through novel authors can tell all aspects of human life in depth including about various human behaviors in it. Novels contain about human life in the face of life problems, novels can also function to study human life at a certain time.

(Tarigan, 2003: 165) concluded that the novel's features are (1) the novel depends on the character, (2) the novel presents more than one impression, (3) the novel presents more than on effect, and (4) the novel presents more than one emotion.

Wellek and Warren (1990: 280) argue that critics who analyzing novels in general distinguish the novel forming elements into three, namely plot, characterization and background, while the latter is symbolic and in modern theory is called atmosphere and tone.

The element of the intrinsic found in the novel is: theme, characterization, background, mandate. (Tarigan, 2003: 87). Another opinion, Burhan Nurgiyantoro (2005: 4) mentions that the novel as a work of fiction offering a world that contains the ideal life model. World imaginative that is built through various intrinsic elements such as events, plot, character (and characterization), background, point of view, and others that all of course imaginative.

Novels as works of fiction are built by some elements of its formation from the theme, characterization, plot, background, mandate, and point of view.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA From the above explanation can be concluded that the novel is a literary work that is a fictional story and seeks to illustrate life of a character through the background. The novel has the intrinsic elements contained therein, below which the author will describe one by one.

2.1.1 Elements Instrinsic of Novel

2.1.1.1 Theme

Theme is something on which to base a story, something that animates the story, something that animates the story, or something that is the main problem in the story. Theme is the soul of the whole story. Therefore, the theme become the basis of the development of the whole story. Theme in many ways is “binding” the presence or absence of events, conflicts and circumstances, including the various other intrinsic elements.

2.1.1.2 Setting

Setting is a description of the time, place, and atmosphere of the events in the story.

The characters in the story live on a certain place and time (period). Therefore the events experienced by the characters of the story occur at a certain time and place also. So, where it happened and when it happened it was called setting.

2.1.1.3 Plot

Plot is a series of events in the novel. Plot is divided into 2 parts; the plot forward

(progressive) is if the event is gradually moving towards the chronological order of the story line. While the backward flow (flash back progressive) is going to do with the ongoing events

(Paul Tukan, S. Pd).

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2.1.1.4 Point of View

The point of view is the way in which the author of the story puts itself in the story, or from the point where the author of the story looks at the story he is making. The point of view can be said also as a technique or a deliberate ploy done by the author to convey his story.

Hence the viewpoint may affect the presentation of a story and its plot.

2.2 Characters

One of the most important aspect in a novel is the Main of Characters.

Character in a novel is not as puzzling as character in real life; a novel is short: it is a work of art, so it's selective character in novel rather as we do in real life.

Roberts and Jacobs (1995:4) say that character may be deifined as a verbal representation of human being. Through action. Character is a person who is responsible for the thoughts and action within a story, poem, or other literature. Characters are extremly important because they are the medium through which a reader interacts with a piece of literature. Every character has his or her own personality, which a creative author uses to assist in forming the plot of a story ir creating a mood. The diffrent attitudes, mannerisms, and even appearances of characters can greatly influencetthe other major elements in a literary work, such as theme, setting and tone. With this understanding of the character, a reader cant become more aware of other aspect of literature, suck as symbolism, giving the reader a more complete understanding of the work. The round character usually the main figure in a story profits from experience and undergoes a change or alterration, which may be shown in an action or actions, the realization of the new strength and therefore the affirmation of previous decisions, the acceptance of a new condition, or the discovery of unrecognized truths. The flat character doesn’t grow.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA They remain the same because they may be stupid or intensive or lacking in knowledge or insight. They end where they begin and are static not dynamic. But flat character are not therefore worthless, for they usually hight the development of theround characters.

The characters are part of a border pattern: they are members of society, and the author's distinctiveview how people related to society will be reaflected in the presentation of every character.

2.2.1 Main Character and Peripheral Character

When reading a novel, we usually face several characters that appeared in the story.

However, each characters has different role. We can see from the role point of view or the level of importance of the character in the story, there is character that only appeared once in the story. The character that called first is central character or main character,. Whereas the second is peripheral character.

Main character is the character that often appeared in the almost each event is the important and the special character, so that we feel, is so dominates the story. In certain novel, the main character always appeared in almost each event and can be found in each page of novel. Nurgiyantoro said (2005: 176-177) "The main character is a figure who takes his story in the related novel He is the most widely told figure, Either as the perpetrator of the incident or who is known to experience the incident ". Usually, a synopsis made for the main character. The main characters in a novel can more than one person.

On the other hand, there are characters that appeared once or several times in the story, and may be relatively short, which is called peripheral character.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2.2.2 Protagonist and Antagonist Character

Wahyudi Siswanto (2011: 144) says, "The protagonist is a character whose character the reader likes. Usually, the character of this character is a good character, and positive

".The protagonist is the first role in the initiative, first having problems, moving the story and engaging in the problem, Holman (1980: 25). The reader always gives sympathy and emphasis by the protagonist character.

On the other hand, the protagonist is, it should be pointed out, not always the hero of the story. Many authors have chosen to unfold a story from the point of view of a character that, while not central to the action of the story to be the protagonist; even if the protagonist’s actions are not heroic, the are nonetheless usually vital to the progress of the story. Neither should be the protagonist be confused with the narrator, they may be same, but even first person narrator doesn’t need to be the protagonist. As they may simply be recalling the event while not living through it as the audience is.

The antagonist is the character of the story that presents the opposition against which the heroes or protagonist must contend. presents the opposition against whom the hero or protagonist has to compete. Wahyudi Siswanto (2011: 144) says, "An antagonist is a character whose character is hated by the reader. Antagonist is a character who opposes the protagonist and causes of the problem on particular situation, Robert and Jacobs (1986: 139).

This figure is usually portrayed as a character of bad character and negative " In the classic style of the story where in the action consist of a hero fighting a villain; the two can be regarded as protagonist and antagonist, respectively. However, authors have often created situations that are more complex. In some instance, the story is told from the villain’s point of view, in such a story, the hero is regarded as the chief antagonist of the story.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2.2.3 Simple Character and Complex Character

Forster in Prihatmi (1990: 12) said: Flat figure is a figure that shows only one facet, for example, if only good or bad,so that the role tends to black and white. Flat characters will not change as long as stories like evil character will remain evil, and good figures will stay good. A simple figure in the original form is character who has only one particular personal quality (having a certain character only) as a human figure, he’s not revealed the possibilities of the side of his life. He doesn’t have the behavior that can provide a shock effect for the reader, the character and behavior of a simple figure is flat, monotonous because it only reflects a particular character only.

A complex figure is a character who has more than one trait. In Nurgiyantoro (2007:

183) round figures or complex figures are figures that can be seen all sides of his life, the personality and identity. He may have a certain character that can be formulated, but he can also desplay the character and behavior various, perhaps even as contradictory and dificult to pradict. Therefore, its the character generaly dificult to describe precisely. Compared to a simple character, a round person more like a real human life, because in adition to having a variety of possible attitudes and actions, he also often provide surprises.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3. THE DESCRIPTION

3.1 Hazel Grace Lancaster

Hazel Grace Lancaster is the protagonist character in the novel The Fault in Our

There will be no left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Eveything that we did and built, wrote and discovered will be forgotten all of this” (Green,2012:12)

And after that they know each other. Hazel is friendly and easy going person. She and

Augustus make friend easily.

I enjoy looking at beautifull people, and i decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasure of existence”Hazel still trying to be calm. A brief awkward silence ensued. Augustust plowed through: “i mean, particularly given that, as you so deliciously pointed out, all of this will end in oblivion and everything. (Green,2012:16)

. She is a simple woman who doesn’t concern too much to her clothes, her hair, and her make-up. She tends to shows her inside beauty than outside beauty, because inside beauty

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA is the real beauty. Inside beauty refers to a good heart, which her action suitable with her heart. She said :

I was wearing old jeans , which had once been tight but now sagged in weird places, and a yellow T-shirt advertising a band I didn't even like anymore . Also my hair: I had this pageboy haircut, and I hadn't even bothered to,like brush it. I looked like a normally proportioned person with a balloon for a head.-I cut a glance to him , and his eyes were stiil on me. It occured to me why they call it eye contact. (Green,2012: 9)

Hazel is smart and care. When Augustust flip his mouth with cigarette but not light it, she told him is not good for the people who have cancer like them and explain what are the consequences. She hate every people who not care their body. She hates the smoker.

"Are you serious?" I asked." You think that's cool ?Oh, my God, you just ruined the whole thing." (Green,2012:19) but of course there is always a hamartia is that oh, my God , even I asked. "You think that's though you HAD FREAKING CANCER you give money to a company in exchange for the chance to acquire YET MORE CANCER. Oh, my God. Let me just assure you that not being able to breathe? SUCKS. Totally disappointing. Totally.(Green,2012:20)

Hazel is ambitious person, she is always want to know about what she loves. Like about the novel story which according to her its can’t call the end. And she always send e- mail for the Author, Peter Van Houten. But he never replies. But, one day Peter Van Houten reply her email. And her favorite author want to find him in Amsterdam.

And she is so happy, really really happy. And before she died she want go to

Amsterdam. But, something going happen with Hazel. When her doctor said she cant go to

Amsterdam with her mom and Augustust because her lungs full of something like liquid.

When the doctor say can’t go to Amsterdam because her cancer has 4 stadium and she want a lung trasnsplant. And she knows she afraid to do that.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “Can i just get like a lung transplant or something ?” I asked. (Green,2012:116)

Hazel is Never give up and be brave. Living life as a girl with cancer, not making

Hazel despairing, he lives his life with practical and logical as well as brave and never give up against the reality of life and cancer.

"I just want to say that there’s gonna come a time when all of us are dead. There was a time before humans and there’s gonna be a time after. It could be tomorrow, it could be a million years from now . And when it does there will be no one left to remember like Cleopatra ,Muhammad Ali or Mozart. Oblivion’s inevitable, and if that scares you, then I suggest youy Ignore it. God knows it’s what everyone else does.(Green,2012: 117)

Hazel is also described as a creative girl in thinking, she's a girl Intelligent view of things through a more critical eye than other people.

“I kept thinking that it sounded like a dragon breathing in time with me, like I had this pet dragon who was cuddled up next to me and cared enough about me to time his breaths to mine. I was thinking about that as I sank into sleep.” (Green 2012: 163)

Hazel Grace as a character who has a good character, described when Hazel was enjoying the time reading her favorite book , then approached by a girl small. The goodness of Hazel is seen by what he does in the quotation Beside :

Well," I said, "I wish I could give you my cannula but I kind of really need the help. "I already felt the loss. I focused on my breathing as Jackie handed the tubes back to me. I got them a quick swipe with my T-shirt, laced the tubes behind my ears, and put the nubbins back in place."Thanks for letting me try it," she said."No problem." (Green,2012: 67)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3.2 Augustust Waters

Augustust Waters, he is 17 years old. He had a little touch of osteosarcoma. He lost his right foot because his disease. He had mahogany hair, straight, and short. He has smokey voice. He is Hazel boyfriend. Augustust is a cool man and kindness like a normal boy. He likes see the beautiful girl. One of on his list is Hazel. Augustust join on Support Group because his Friend, Issac. A place that brings him with Hazel. When Augustust meet Hazel, he is always looking at her. Because for him, she is beautiful and he is enjoyed to see her.

- Positive One of the qualities that Augustus possesses is positive, by this character Augustus was finally able to change Hazel Grace's sarcastic glance life. "Without Pain, How Could We Know Joy?" (Green,2012:52)

- Patient When she spends her time with her ex-girlfriend Caroline, girlrain cancer sufferers who turn Caroline into a monster that does not have the filter between his mind and his grim, unpleasant and words painful, but Augustus patiently was beside the girl, accepting any other annoying and hurtful words from Caroline.

"It takes forever. It took almost a year, and it was a year of me hanging out with this girl who would, like, just start laughing out of nowhere and point at my prosthetic and call me Stumpy. "(Green,2012: 237)

- Smart

Augustus Waters is described as the figure of a smart guy and likes to use

metafora.

"The cigarette dangled unlit from the unsmiling corner of his mouth."They do not kill you unless you light them, and I've never lit one. It's a metaphor, see:

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you do not give it the power to do its killing. (Green,2012 :20)

- Handsome and sexy His good looks were said by Hazel's mother when Augustus picked up Hazel to dinner at a restaurant in Amsterdam before their meeting with Peter Van Houten.

"Augustus," my mom said behind me, "you look extremely handsome."(Green,2012: 216) Hazel thought Augustus was sexy, even just by observing it. In below are some of

Hazel's quotes that Augustus is sexy:

Look, let me just say it: He was hot. You're sure he's hot?" She asked when I was finished. "Pretty sure," I said (Green,2012: 9) - Funny and like Joking Seen when Augustus took Hazel to his house and managed to make his father was instantly annoyed with his joke about his father and mother's habits who likes to make placards on every occasion and in every piece of furniture they house.

"That's exactly what we found at the Memorial when we were in the thick of it with Gus's treatment, "his dad said. "Everybody was so kind. Strong, too. In the darkest days, the Lord puts the best people into your life."I like the freaking Encouragements. I really do. I just can not admit it because I'm a teenager. "His dad rolled his eyes. (Green 2012: 42) The funny character of Augustus is also evident from Isaac's explanation of the day of his funeral said in the following quote:

“Other people will be able to tell you funny stories about Gus, because he was a funny guy,” "(Green,2012: 364)

- Romantic

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The romantic side of Augustus can be seen when he always expresses his love in the same way openly to Hazel Grace, through romantic words, sometimes leaving Hazel silent, and holding her breath, as seen in several excerpts below this:

"You realize that trying to keep your distance from me will not lessen my affection for you, "he said. (Green,200:12) - Stay Strong and optimistic Augustus lost one of his legs began to re-attack him, the painful, poignant, tumors begin to re-gnaw at him not only in his bones, but throughout the organs. But even though,

Augustus didn’t despairing, he remains tough and optimistic through his days.

"I'll fight it. I'll fight it for you. Do not you worry about me, Hazel Grace. I'm okay. I'll find a way to hang around and annoy you for a long time. " (Green,2012: 288)

3.3 Peter Van Houten Peter Van Houten is the antagonist character , author of "An Imperial Affliction",

Hazel's favorite book, and the father of Anna Van Houten, the inspiration for his book. He is an eccentric person because he has a million fans but is reluctant to reply to their mail.

"Fan mail," Yours are the first missives to which I have replied, and look where that got me. I frankly find the reality of readers wholly unappetizing.(Green,2012:183)

He's an alcoholic, and when Hazel and Augustus meet him in person, he's drunk.

“We pour scotch into a glass an then call to mind thoughts of water, and then we mix the actual Scotch with the abstracted idea of water.”(Green,2012:184)

He is a arrogant man, he insults them and refuses to answer most of Hazel's questions, effectively destroying his dream of knowing what happened to an Imperial Affliction.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Yeah,"I said, speaking up on Augustus's behalf."And yes,we-well, Augustus, he made meeting you his Wish so that we could come here,so that you could tell us what happens after the end of An Impirial Affliction.," Van Houten said nothing, just took a long pull on his drink. He took a long drink, then grimaced. "I do not have a drinking problem," he announced, his voice neddlesly loud."I have a Churcillian relationship with alcohol: I can crack jokes and govern England and do anyting I want to do. Except not drink" He kicked off his slippers. He had really ugly feet.(Green,2012:185- 186)

He is ignorant people and rude. When his assistant tried to remind him that his way of treating hazel and augustus was wrong. He even snapped at his assistant, even he didn’t care when his assistant was resigned.

Van Houten pursed his lips. "I regret that I cannot indulge your childish whims, but I refuse to pity you in the manner to which you are well accustomed." "I don't want your pity,"I said. "I RESIGN!" Lidewij shouted. There were tears in her eyes. "BULSLSHIT! That's bullshit. Just tell me! Make something up!" "No, and I'll thank you not to curse in my house. It isn't becoming of a lady." (Green, 2012:193).

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER IV CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

4.1 Conclusions

In John Green’s Novel , The Fault In Our Stars, the main character are fictious characters, they are Hazel Grace Lancaster, Augustus Waters, Peter Van Houten. All of these characters have different moral values among them.

Having description the main characters, I conclude that the characteristic of the main characteristic are various. If we talk about characteristic, it means we talk about quality of mind and habitual mode of behaviour or personality, suck as lazy, scene or anxious, aggresive or fearful, thoughtful or inconsiderate, open or secretive, or avoiding eye contact.

So, it is obvious that the characteristic of human beings are various because the traits it self genetically. As we can see in The fault In Our Stars.

1) Hazel Grace Lancaster, she is a happy person although sometimes she is moody.

She likes reading and smart. College girl. She is stubborn sometimes. She has

Thyroid cancer

2) Augustust Waters, he is kindness, easy going and normal boy sometimes cool.

Has a sense humor. Really like video gamers. He want to smoke before he died

but he cant. He has osteosarcome. He is really faithfully with Hazel.

Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Mike and Sydney Green. Three weeks after he was born, his family moved to Michigan, then later Birmingham, Alabama, and finally to Orlando, Florida. He attended Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, and Indian Springs School outside of Birmingham, Alabama, the latter of which he later used as the inspiration for the main setting of his first book, . Green graduated from Kenyon College in 2000 with a double major in English and Religious studies He has spoken about being bullied and how it had made life as a teenager miserable for him.

After graduating from college, Green spent five months working as a student chaplain at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio while enrolled at the University of Chicago Divinity School (although he never actually attended the school). He intended to become an Episcopal priest, but his experiences of working in a hospital with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses inspired him to become an author, and later to write The Fault in Our Stars.

Green lived for several years in Chicago, where he worked for the book review journal Booklist as a publishing assistant and production editor while writing Looking for

Alaska. While there, he reviewed hundreds of books, particularly literary fiction and books about Islamor conjoined twins.] He has also critiqued books for Book

Review and created original radio essays for NPR's All Things Considered and WBEZ,

Chicago's public radio station. Green later lived in New York City for two years while his wife attended graduate school.

Green's first novel, Looking for Alaska, published by Dutton Children's Books in

2005, is a school story and teen romance inspired by his experiences at Indian Springs,

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA fictionalized as Culver Creek Preparatory High School. The novel was awarded the annual Michael L. Printz Award by the American Library Association, recognizing the year's

"best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit".] It also appeared on the

ALA's annual list Top 10 Best Books for Young Adults. The film rights were purchased in

2005 by Paramount, which hired Josh Schwartz as writer and director, but five years later, with no progress on the project, Green told fans that, while he "desperately loved" the , there seemed to be little interest at Paramount. As sales of Looking for

Alaska continued to increase in 2011, Green showed mixed feelings about a movie, which he felt would threaten readers' "intense and private connection to the story". In 2012, the book reached The New York Times Best Seller list for children's paperbacks, Green's second novel, An Abundance of Katherines (Dutton, 2006) was a runner-up for the Printz Award and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

With fellow young adult authors Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle, Green collaborated on Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances (Speak, 2008), which consists of three interconnected short stories, including Green's "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle", each set in the same small town on Christmas Eve, during a massive snowstorm. In November 2009, that book reached Number 10 on The New York Times Best Seller list for paperback children's books.

In 2008, Green's third novel, Paper Towns, debuted at number five on The New York

Times Best Seller list for children's books, and the novel was made into the 2015 film Paper

Towns. In 2009, Paper Towns was awarded the 2009 Edgar Award for Best Young Adult

Novel and the 2010 Corine Literature Prize.

After this, Green and his friend, young-adult writer David Levithan, collaborated on the novel Will Grayson, Will Grayson, which was published by Dutton in 2010. It was a runner-up (Honor Book) for two of the annual ALA awards, the Stonewall Book Award (for

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA excellence in LGBT children's and young adult literature), and the Odyssey Award for

Excellence in Audiobook Production.

In August 2009, Green announced he was writing a new book entitled The

Sequel, which was later scrapped. His sixth book, The Fault in Our Stars, was released in

January 2012. He crafted the novel by collaborating with Dutton editor Julie Strauss-

Gabel. Green explained that several parts of The Sequel were reworked into The Fault in Our

Stars.Green signed all 150,000 copies of the first printing and his wife and his brother applied their own symbols, a Yeti and an Anglerfish (known as the "Hanklerfish"), respectively. The

New York Times Best Seller list for children's books listed The Fault in Our Stars at number one for two weeks in January and February 2012. The novel has been made into a major motion picture of the same name, released in the United States on June 6, 2014.

In late 2013, Green stated that he is writing a new book with the working title The

Racket. He sold 5,000 words of a rough draft on IndieGoGo for $10 in order to raise money as part of the Project for Awesome charity event. On November 16, 2014, Green wrote on his Tumblr page that he is not working on The Racket but is working on something else with a different title.

Although his novels have earned mostly positive critical reception, Green has discussed what he believes to be flaws in his novels, when he looked at them in retrospect.

Additionally, in response to a fan's tweet, Green apologized for using the word retarded in Paper Towns, stating, "Yeah, I regret it. At the time, I thought an author's responsibility was to reflect language as I found it, but now ... eight years later, I don't feel like a book about humanizing the other benefited from dehumanizing language," adding, "it's not in the movie, and I won't use the word again in a book or elsewhere."

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In September 2015, Green announced that he would be taking a break from social media in order to focus on writing his next book. In August 2016, Green stated that over the next ten months he would be limiting his public appearances in order to finish a draft of the new book. But on September 20, Green took to his YouTube channel that he may not publish another book, citing his current writing experience as "this intense pressure, like people were watching over my shoulder while I was writing".

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA B.Summary of the Novel

Hazel Grace Lancaster—a 16-year-old with cancer that has spread to her lungs— attends a cancer patient support group at her mother's behest. At first she hesitates because she feels like it has done her nothing. She thinks attending the support group could be the worst part of her life, until a particular support meeting, Hazel meets a 17-year-old boy named Augustus Waters, whose osteosarcoma caused him to lose his right leg, which was replaced with a prosthetic. Augustus is at the meeting to support his friend, Isaac, whose only remaining eye is soon to be removed due to cancer. Hazel and Augustus strike a bond immediately and agree to read each other's favorite novels. Augustus gives Hazel The Price of Dawn, and Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction, a novel written by Peter Van

Houten, who lives in Amsterdam, about a cancer-stricken girl named Anna that parallels

Hazel's own experience. After Augustus finishes reading her book, he is frustrated upon learning that the novel ends abruptly without a conclusion. Hazel explains the novel's author had retreated following the novel's publication and has not been heard from since.

A year later, Augustus reveals to Hazel that he has tracked down Van Houten's assistant, Lidewij, and, through her, has managed to start an e-mail correspondence with Van

Houten. The two write to Van Houten with questions regarding the novel's ending and the fate of the mother of Anna. Van Houten eventually replies, explaining that he can only answer Hazel's questions in person. At a picnic, Augustus surprises Hazel with tickets to

Amsterdam to meet Van Houten.

While in Amsterdam, Augustus confesses his love for Hazel. Hazel and Augustus finally meet Van Houten but are shocked to find that he is a mean-spirited drunk. Horrified by Van Houten's behavior, Lidewij confesses to having arranged the meeting on his behalf,

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA angering Van Houten, who proceeds to insult Hazel's cancer, starting an argument and causing Hazel and Augustus to flee from the drunken author's home.

Augustus confesses that his cancer has returned. The two affirm their love and support for each other. Hazel heartbroken and she doesn't know what to do with herself. After this traumatic event,

Van Houten shows up at Augustus's funeral to apologize to Hazel.

Hazel learns that Augustus was writing a sequel to An Imperial Affliction. Hazel reads

Augustus's words. He says getting hurt in this world is inevitable, but we do get to choose who we allow to hurt us, and that he is happy with his choice, and hopes she likes her choice too. The book closes with Hazel stating that she is happy with her choice.
