I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles! I encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community, or for larger manuscripts, the Fly Times Supplement series. Summary Aggregations of conspecifics are ubiquitous in the biological world. In arthropods, such aggregations are generated and regulated through complex interactions of chemical and mechanical as well as abiotic and biotic factors. Aggregations are often functionally associated with facilitation of defense, thermomodula- tion, feeding, and reproduction, amongst others. Although the iconic aggregations of locusts, fireflies, and monarch butterflies come to mind, many other groups of arthropods also aggregate. Cycloalexy is a form of circular or quasicircular aggregation found in many animals. In terrestrial arthropods, cycloalexy appears to be a form of defensive aggregation although we cannot rule out other functions, particularly thermomodulation. In insects, cycloalexic-associated behaviors may include coordinated movements, such as the adoption of seemingly threatening postures, regurgitation of presumably toxic compounds, as well as biting movements. These behaviors appear to be associated with attempts to repel objects perceived to be threatening, such as potential predators or parasitoids.

New information All known Egyptian taxa of the family Ceratopogonidae (biting midges) are systematically catalogued. A total number of 64 species belonging to 11 genera, four tribes and four subfamilies has been treated. Data for this study have been compiled from both available literature and specimens collected from different Egyptian localities by the authors. An updated classification, synonymies, type localities, world distributions by biogeographic realm(s) and country, Egyptian localities and dates of collection are provided comprising some new locality records. Cycloalexy was coined by Vasconcellos-Neto and Jolivet in 1988 and further defined by Jolivet and collaborators in 1990 in reference to a specific type of circular defence. The term has been applied to numerous organisms, including adult insects, nymphs, and even vertebrates, but has lost precision with the accumulation of anecdotal reports not addressing key elements of the behaviour as first defined. We review the literature and propose three criteria that are sufficient and necessary to define the behaviour: (1) individuals form a circle; (2) defensive attributes of the individuals are positioned on the periphery of the circle, and as a result, the periphery of the circle uniformly contains either heads or abdomens; (3) animals preemptively adopt the circle as a resting formation, meaning it is not necessary to observe predation.

Con trampas de luz se capturaron un total de 15 géneros en asociación con explotaciones ovinas y 11 géneros en hábitats naturales, y 13 géneros emergieron de sus lugares de cría. Además del género Culicoides, la gran mayoría de los ejemplares pertenecían al género Forcipomyia, muy abundante en todos los lugares muestreados. El resto del material capturado incluye los siguientes géneros y especies: Atrichopogon, Dasyhelea, Palpomyia, Bezzia, Stilobezzia, Ceratopogon, Brachypogon, Monohelea, Allohelea tessellata, Ceratoculicoides havelkai, Homohelea iberica, Kolenohelea calcarata y Serromyia femorata. Se aportan datos interesantes sobre los lugares cría de diversas especies, acompañados de una revisión bibliográfica.

The term has been applied to numerous organisms, including adult insects, nymphs, and even vertebrates, but has lost precision with the accumulation of anecdotal reports not addressing key elements of the behaviour as first defined. We review the literature and propose three criteria that are sufficient and necessary to define the behaviour: (1) individuals form a circle; (2) defensive attributes of the individuals are positioned on the periphery of the circle, and as a result, the periphery of the circle uniformly contains either heads or abdomens; (3) animals preemptively adopt the circle as a resting formation, meaning it is not necessary to observe predation.

Expanding a classic woodland food chain into a geographically variable food web __________________________________ Jack Shutt Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2017 Thesis abstract There is ample evidence that climate change is impacting on phenology and it has been suggested that this may generate trophic mismatches. A key system for investigating phenology and trophic mismatch occurs in spring in temperate deciduous woodlands, where folivorous caterpillars and their predators, insectivorous passerines, are reliant upon ephemeral resources for reproductive success and survival. However, studies are primarily conducted within single-site, oak- (Quercus sp) dominated woodland and focus on a single caterpillar species, winter moth (Operophtera brumata), despite these passerines being habitat generalists with large geographic ranges. It remains to be seen whether insights gained from these studies can be generalised on the landscape scale across different habitats.
