The property dates from the 1930s, and - typical of its kind - had separate living room, small kitchen, and a utility area that adjoined the garage. Like most garages these days, it was used only for storage, so half its space was used to enhance a new living area, and provide a separate, revamped utility room that now has a basin, WC, wall cabinets and a work surface - below which are a washing machine and a drier. Bare brickwork in this area had to be damp-proofed and insulated. Grapevine Magazine 9 Designed & Built With Jon Stocks, and his sons Jon, Dan, and Kieran of DWS Ltd. Our Secret Warp Factor The wooden door shown here was old, misshapen and let in draughts... until we gave it a new lease of life ime and weather never are kind to front doors, writes Jon Stocks. The one on this page belongs to the Stumperlowe home of Nick Bell and his wife Joey. Their property - where they have lived for Tten years - dates from about 1920, and during the past century its wooden entrance has been ravaged by heat, damp and cold. Paint cracked and peeled as the wood warped, allowing in draughts. Its circular, stained-glass window was single glazed, and seemed in danger of falling apart - rattling each time people came and went. We gave Nick and Joey two options: a new door, or the existing one made good as new. They decided on refurbishment. “DWS have done work on many properties near where we live,” says Nick, “including the house opposite ours, where they replaced wooden soffits and windows in their original style. We were keen to preserve our front door’s stained glass, which DWS were able. to do by encapsulating it between two clear panes.” This method meant that the window was triple glazed, and our secret technique of straightening the door’s warped sections further enhanced its thermal efficiency - as did a new storm threshold. The frame was renewed, and the finishing touch was three coats of white Dulux Weathershield. “The door looks good as new,” says Nick, “and its tight fit has made our house much warmer. We chose to replace the letterbox, handle and knocker with pewter ones, which look good. Our front entrance was boarded up for a few days when the door was taken away, but everything was done within a week.”

The rot has set-in for rot, because softwood can have its chemical structure altered to resist decay - creating Accoya, which provides an excellent material for DWS to work with. Grapevine Magazine 33 KING JIM’S SURPRISE BABY Did James II’s queen really give birth, or was a changeling smuggled into her bed? ave you ever, writes Ian Macgill, heard of a Scotch warming pan? In olden days, if a knight returned unexpectedly from the wars and found his wife in bed with a handsome youth, the conversation would go like this: HHusband: “Darling, who the devil is…?” Wife: “Oh, er...he’s the new Scotch warming pan.” And that would be the end of the matter. Scotch warming pans were pageboys sent to warm aristocrats’ beds before Lord and Lady Whoever retired for the night. King Charles II had one of the best bed-warmers of all in Nell Gwyn, but his kid brother, later James II, had his life ruined by a warming pan. No, he didn’t roll over and singe his vitals. The affair was much more serious than that. It came to be known as the Warming Pan Plot, and resulted in James losing the throne of England. Here’s how it all came to pass. James was Catholic, but his English subjects - who were overwhelmingly Protestant - tolerated him on the throne because his two daughters had been raised as Anglicans, and eventually one of them would succeed him. The realm’s future religious leanings were assured. Or so everyone presumed. Those daughters - Mary, and her younger sister Anne - were the only surviving children of James’s first wife, who died long before he ascended the throne. But in 1673, a dozen years before being crowned king, James married for a second time. His bride was Mary of Modena, an intensely religious Catholic-Italian noblewoman. The couple had many children, but all were still born or died as infants. Therefore, when James eventually plonked himself upon the throne his heirs were Protestants - Mary and Anne. Most people in England were happy with that situation. Then during June of 1688, two and a half years into James’s reign, came a bombshell that caused uproar. It was announced that the queen had given birth to a healthy son. He would be next in line to the throne, so a Catholic succession was assured. For some reason the pregnancy had been kept secret, and soon a cruel rumour circulated that Her Majesty had not given birth. The new-born was said to be a changeling smuggled to the queen’s bed in a warming pan. True or not, the new arrival put paid to King Jim.’s reign. His pro-Catholic policies had already caused simmering discontent, and within months the ‘Glorious Revolution’ had taken place - so called because James was deposed without bloodshed. He was succeeded as king by his son-in-law, the Protestant-Dutch Prince William of Orange. He became William III, and ruled jointly with his wife, the aforementioned Mary. Her father fled to Ireland, where in 1690 his forces were trounced by William’s army at the Battle of the Boyne. James ended up in France with his family, where he died during 1701. His only son (if we ignore the royal birth deniers) eventually became James Stuart, The Old Pretender (to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland), who fathered Bonnie Prince Charlie - The Young Pretender. James Stuart never lived down the warming pan scandal, and whenever his supporters stirred up trouble - as they did with the Scots/English Jacobite rebellion of 1715 - all were taunted with this ditty... “Let those rebels if they can Make us forget the warming pan Which first conveyed that pretty man Into the royal chamber.”

34 Grapevine Magazine Beautiful Bathing With James Broomhead of Graham Bathrooms Bathroom Harmony It’s important to go with the flow when coming up with design solutions that suit all members of a family eople with small bathrooms often throw out their bath with the bath water, and have a walk-in shower installed, writes James Broomhead. Which is fine, providing there is nobody in the household who likes having a bath. P If space allows, it is usually best to have both a bath and a Two views of Martin and Laura’s bathroom walk-in shower, as Martin and Laura did while revamping the bathroom of their three-bedroomed, detached house at Ecclesall. “I much prefer having a shower,” said Martin, but Laura emphasised her love of long, hot soaks. Fortunately, their bathroom could accommodate a large bath and a walk-in shower, though the existing layout had to be realigned. My design placed the tub where the old one had been, but the WC had to be moved from a recess, which proved perfect for siting the shower and its glass screen. “Friends of Laura’s recommended Graham’s showroom to us,” says Martin. “It’s a fantastic place, which must be one of the biggest of its kind in Sheffield, with modern and traditional layouts on display. We made two hour-long visits, and were impressed by the helpfulness of James and his staff, then later by our bathroom fitters - Gary Turton and his son, Lee. They really were great, and had everything finished within two weeks.” Martin and Laura’s two kids - Evie, 4, and Ray, 18 months - are very taken with the bath’s shower handset. “It makes washing and rinsing their hair much easier,” says Laura.
