religions Article Spiritual Ecology: On the Way to Ecological Existentialism Sam Mickey Theology and Religious Studies, University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA; [email protected] Received: 17 September 2020; Accepted: 29 October 2020; Published: 4 November 2020 Abstract: Spiritual ecology is closely related to inquiries into religion and ecology, religion and nature, and religious environmentalism. This article presents considerations of the unique possibilities afforded by the idea of spiritual ecology. On one hand, these possibilities include problematic tendencies in some strands of contemporary spirituality, including anti-intellectualism, a lack of sociopolitical engagement, and complicity in a sense of happiness that is captured by capitalist enclosures and consumerist desires. On the other hand, spiritual ecology promises to involve an existential commitment to solidarity with nonhumans, and it gestures toward ways of knowing and interacting that are more inclusive than what is typically conveyed by the term “religion.” Much work on spiritual ecology is broadly pluralistic, leaving open the question of how to discern the difference between better and worse forms of spiritual ecology. This article affirms that pluralism while also distinguishing between the anti-intellectual, individualistic, and capitalistic possibilities of spiritual ecology from varieties of spiritual ecology that are on the way to what can be described as ecological existentialism or coexistentialism. It could be a call to become a priest or religious, or it could be a divine vocation to enter marriage with a very special person, and have children, and find our way to heaven by doing great things on this earth in ordinary circumstances. The whole idea of vocation is explored here: God’s deep concern for everything in our life, and how we plan our lives — the ways we learn to put all that we are as boys and girls into becoming men and women. Specific objectives 1. To recall the first vocation we have: to be personal friends and followers of Christ, and to shape everything in our lives in ways that are faithful to the Lord. 2. To think about our special vocations: how God cares very much about the life each one of us will live — the kind of life He invites us to and that we decide to live, and all the special circumstances of the life He invites each one of us to have. -

FAHRENHEIT 451: The temperature at which book-paper catches fire and burns PART I: THE HEARTH AND THE SALAMANDER IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark. -

At least that’s what finally made dad explode at Uncle Billy’s house. And dad, like ... never explodes. Especially at Uncle Billy. Uncle Billy is that really rich, old, great uncle that everybody wishes they could have. And we actually have him. Lucky us, except of course, there’s a catch. Uncle Billy is totally useless. Not that he’s useless. He’s, like, super successful and filthy rich, and if you ask (or don’t ask), he’s more than happy to tell you all about his first job and his second job and his third job and his first business and his second business and … you get the picture. To hear Uncle Billy tell it, he was working while he was still in diapers. Whatever. Like anybody cares. Because he doesn’t do what rich, lonely uncles are supposed to do - such as adopt and lavish me with all the good things in life. Okay, maybe he’s not that lonely. He’s got Aunt Rose to keep him company and listen to how wonderful he is. And truthfully, I wouldn’t be all that good at that. But still. I’d listen if I thought it was worth my while. Which it’s totally not. As he likes to point out, the only valuables I’ll ever be getting from his will are jewels of advice. -

Fiorella Montero-Diaz Keele University Between 1980-2000, Peru was engulfed in an internal war confronting the state and two armed groups Shining Path and MRTA. In the aftermath, violence was replaced by silence along with distrust, disunity and distance between the Andes and Lima, which reinforced social segregation by class, race and ethnicity. This article is informed by interviews conducted during fieldwork in Lima during 2010-11. It explores the ravages of war as one of the main factors fuelling an apparent Limeño white upper class desire to integrate with the broader Peruvian population through popular intercultural fusion music. It argues that a sector of white upper class fusion musicians and audiences link their wishes and dreams to their music ordinary life, enabling themselves to change the normalised hierarchical worldview and act accordingly, to move beyond apathy, privilege and delusion. They do so by turning exclusive upper class concert spaces into political spaces of attempted social reconciliation, liminal spaces to renegotiate identities and political attitudes by musicking and empathetically acknowledging and listening to those historically silenced by hegemony and racism. They make music a technology of self-transformation, a means for the white upper classes to counteract the underlying causes of the violence, which persist. -
