CLASS a WRESTLING TOURNAMENT the Tournament Began in 1962 As a Single Elimination Event with Eight Schools CLASS A WRESTLING TOURNAMENT The tournament began in 1962 as a single elimination event with eight schools (Andover, Exeter, NMH, Tabor, Worcester, Choate, Milton, and GDA). Prior to that time, all public and private schools in New England competed in one New England tournament. Exeter has been the dominant school winning 15 times, highlighted by streaks of 5-3-3-2 consecutive years as the champion. Tabor has 10 championships, including a 5 year run. The Hyde, ME school has 4 titles with 3 in a row (‘79-’81) and Andover and NMH each have 3 championships. GDA won the first two events and Deerfield has one title to round out the champions. There have been three 4x champions and ten 3x individual champions. Below is a chart depicting the results for the last 13 years (the maximum number of years our wrestlers have been in school unless they repeated a year). The closest team race was in ’94 when Hyde edged Tabor by 1.5 points with 3rd place 5 points and 4th place 6 points back. In ’99 Andover won the individual championship at 275 to overtake NMH and win by 3 points. Exeter’s 272 points in ’00 is the best team score in that time. Exeter’s 6 individual champs in ’90 were the most for one team during this period. Exeter had 5 champs in ’92 and Deerfield had 5 in ’93. Three teams won with only one champ: ’88 Exeter, ’93 Exeter at 275, and ’94 Hyde ME. ‘00 ‘99 ‘98 ‘97 ‘96 ‘95 ‘94 ‘93 ‘92 ‘91 ‘90 ‘89 ‘88 Andover 3 1 4 4 8 8 6 5 3 5 4 8 7 Choate 9 12 10 12 Deerfield 7 3 7 8 2 7 3 2 2 2 3 2 2 Exeter 1 5 5 3 1 1 4 1 1 1 2 1 1 Hyde, CT 12 Hyde, ME 13 10 2 10 4 6 1 4 8 4 9 7 9 KUA 17 16 12 11 12 12 11 8 11 12 11 11 Loomis 6 6 9 6 Moses Brown 10 9 8 New Hampton 5 8 15 7 10 NMH 4 2 1 1 6 2 5 3 6 8 5 4 3 Proctor 16 14 12 12 9 7 7 6 PCD 11 11 11 9 7 10 Tabor 8 7 6 5 5 3 2 7 4 3 1 5 6 Tilton 15 13 16 15 13 13 10 9 10 15 Vermont 18 15 14 13 9 9 9 10 5 6 6 3 8 WMA 2 4 3 2 3 5 8 6 12 11 10 9 4 Worcester 14 14 13 14 11 11 7 11 7 10 8 10 5 NEISWA CLASS A TOURNAMENT The tournament began in 1962 as a single elimination event with eight schools. Phillips Andover, Phillips Exeter, Northfield Mount Hermon, Tabor, and Worcester are the schools that remain from the original eight. Governor Dummer and Milton now compete in the Graves Kelsey Tournament, while Choate Rosemary Hall left the A’s in ’66 to compete in the Ct. State League but returned in ’97 to the A League. Prior to 1962 all schools, public and private, competed in a single New England Championship Tournament. • Schedule on Pages 41-44 November 23, 2018
Schedule on pages 41-44 November 23, 2018 On behalf of the Girls’/Women District of Massachusetts Hockey it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 16U and 19U divisions of our State Tournament. The district wants to thank our hosts the New England Sports Center for making their facility available to us so we can house all divisions in a central location and allow girls’ hockey players and fans to watch their friends compete as they do. The events of this weekend would not be possible without the dedicated work of the many volunteers in who represent the Girls Tournament Committee and have put in countless hours in the organizational process: Karla Aguirre, Jenny Cameron, Colleen Fagan, Peter Giuliano, Jen Glynn, Christopher Gong, Paula Gray, Chris Holden, David Hymovitz, Bob Joyce, Don McNeil, Jay O’Neil, Mindy O’Neil, Dave Pelletier, and Deb Pond. We wish all our players and coaches the best of luck this weekend as they compete towards the state championship. To those teams fortunate to advance to the USA Hockey National Tournament we wish you the best of luck as you represent Massachusetts Hockey. We expect everyone who enters the New England Sports Center for our event will be respectful of the players, officials and other spectators who are here to enjoy this event. We expect that spectators will be an encouraging voice for their own team and refrain from any comments directed towards the on-ice official or players on other teams. If you cannot meet these expectations, you can and will be asked to leave the facility under USA Hockey’s Zero Tolerance Policy.
