Les Sybelles Summer 2015 Press Kit LA TOUSSUIRE - LES SYBELLES SUMMER 2015 PRESS KIT Ski Resort opening from 31th may to 29th august 2015 www.la-toussuire.com PRESENTATION OF Toussuire Les Sybelles 02 Located at 1,800 m above sea level in Maurienne, La Toussuire is known as the world’s largest cycling domain. Summer and winter alike, enjoy a 360° view of the neighbouring uplands and an exceptional sunshine from the resort, ideally placed on a plateau. A cycling tradition is soon part of the history of this resort of Savoy, which is surrounded by mythi- cal passes and hosts professional and cyclosportive races. Partner with the AG2R LA MONDIALE professional cycling team, La Toussuire regularly hosts training sessions. Ideal terrain for cycling, La Toussuire has an accommodation network which offers a specific cyclo reception and organises timed ascension during summer. Also partner with the Fédération Française de Handball (French Federation of Handball), La Toussuire welcomes pro- fessional teams wanting to train at a high altitude. During summer, the mountain is soft and reachable. Summertime is favourable to outdoor activities and family relaxa- tion. The hiking trails allow visitors to discover the Alpine fauna and flora. The atypical patrimony of the uplands is part of the territory’s other specificities. Children and grown-ups will also be able to enjoy a lot of animations such as gastronomy, land, motorsports… There is something for everyone! ABOUT CYCLING 03 FOCUS ON LA TOUSSUIRE ASCENT The La Toussuire ascent is not officially part of the family of passes. Nevertheless, it does remain mythical. From Saint Jean de Maurienne to the plateau de La Toussuire, a grade separation of 1,239 metres and a total of 15 kilometers of turns lead to the alpine pastures which shelter the highest resort of Les Sybelles. This ascent has been particularly prized by French as well as Belgian people since the end of the 1970s. Later, this ascent was also taken three times during the Tour de France. The Danese Rasmussen won the stage starting from Bourg d’Oisans in 2006, after Floyd Landis’s terrible default. In 2012, the stage starts from Albertville and is won by the French racing cyclist Pierre Rolland. The same year, more than 5,000 non-professional cyclists crossed the finish line at La Toussuire resort, which hosted the first act of l’Etape du Tour. Two final stages of the Tour des Pays de Savoie (2009 and 2013) and the first final stage at a high altitude of the Crité- rium du Dauphiné (2011) complete this record. It took 84 years to build this road which can be climbed in the shape of a loop by Villarembert and Le Corbier. While in complete effort, the climber will not fail to look up to the splendid panoramas which surround the road: the Aiguilles d’Arves in the blue of the sky, the alpine pastures or the church of Fontcouverte in low-angle shot. From Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, go in the direction of the Vallée de l’Arvan, then La Toussuire. Holiday-makers will be able to discover this uncommon landscape and to walk up to its fauna and flora thanks to the network of arranged and marked hiking trails. Due to its particular geographic location, Maurienne has always been a valley of traffic and trade. A local specific coo- kery was born as time and influences went by. • Alps Favor US, Says Movistar's Quintana
SPORTS SATURDAY, JULY 25, 2015 Quintana bidding to eclipse ‘Lucho’ Herrera SAINT-JEAN-DE-MAURIENNE: Nairo Quintana will be aiming to cement the special relationship between Colombia and Alp d’Huez when tackling the mystical Tour de France climb today. The 25- year-old 2014 Giro d’Italia champion may be the most famous Colombian cyclist and Alp d’Huez the most iconic mountain in the sport, but it was Luis ‘Lucho’ Herrera who paved the way for riders in the Andean country 31 years ago. It was Monday, July 17 in 1984 on the 151km 17th stage of the Tour de France from Grenoble to Alpe d’Huez when the 23- year-old Colombian climber announced his talent to the world. The day started badly for Herrera, who was ini- tially distanced by the peloton as French pair Laurent Fignon and Bernard Hinault, the two favorites, battled for supremacy. But Herrera man- aged to cling on and by the foot of Alpe d’Huez he was alongside Fignon. Herrera attacked and reeled in Hinault before going on to win the stage at the Alpine colossus’ summit, joining the likes of cycling legends Fausto Coppi and Joop Zoetemelk as win- ners on Alpe d’Huez. Herrera, officially still an ama- teur, went on to finish the race 27th overall as Fignon won his second Tour-a year later Hinault would take revenge but France has not had a Tour winner since. The Colombian star would enjoy many more great days in cycling, winning the 1987 Vuelta a Espana and that same year earning his best finish in the Tour-fifth.

• Ranking the Greatest Cyclists of All Time
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling Rankinghttps://www.theouterline.com The Greatest Cyclists Of All Time Who are the greatest male cyclists of all time? That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time. The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.
