PURPOSE OF THE SCHOOL AND SYSTEM OF INSTRUCTION

The design of the School is to afford a practical and scientific education in the principles of

General Jurisprudence.

The Common and Statute Law of the .

The System of Equity Jurisprudence.

Pleading and Civil Procedure at Common Law and under the Practice Acts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The Course for the degree of Bachelor of Laws covers three years.

The case system of study is used. Under this method carefully selected collections of cases are employed as the basis of instruction, the object being to teach the student to deduce legal principles from reported cases, to apply these principles to other cases, and so to de- velop the power of legal analysis and accurate reasoning by the use of actual decisions of the courts.

Although the aim of the School is to train its students so that they may be qualified to practice law in any common law jurisdiction, especial care is taken throughout the course to indicate in each sub- ject the peculiarities of the law of New York. Particular attention is called to the following courses, which have special bearing on the New York law

1. Common Law and Code Pleading.—In this course the prin- ciples of common law and code pleading are taught, and the chief similarities and differences between the common law pleading and the code pleading (which is in force in New York) are fully ex- plained.

2. New York Civil Practice.—This course embraces a thor- ough study of the New York Civil Practice Act, as well as practical work in the drawings of pleadings and papers in civil actions and special proceedings.

A comprehensive course in Pure Jurisprudence is conducted, which deals with the fundamental ethical concepts, the general prin- ciples which form the basis of law, as well as its juridical and genetic origin. 6 Fordham University

It is believed that the courses of the School are so arranged as to unite a sound training in the fundamental principles of the law with a training in the practical application of these principles to actual legal work.

Courses in New Jersey Practice and Connecticut Practice re- spectively are given throughout the year. Either of these courses may be substituted for the New York Practice course by third year

students ; and, by arrangement with the Registrar, all students may take either of these courses specially, provided there be no conflict with regular courses.

School of Law 7

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

The School of Law is open to both sexes. Students will not be registered under abbreviated or colloquial forms of recognized names. The registered name of the student will be adhered to in all certificates and degrees of the school, except in cases of obvious error, or upon presentation of a certified copy of a Supreme Court order permitting a change of name. Applicants for degrees must be at least eighteen years of age upon entering the first year course, must be of good moral character and must present

1. A certificate of graduation from a University or College approved by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York or, ;

2. A certificate showing completion of one year of college work

or its equivalent, in a college or university of standing satisfactory to the School of Law, supplemented by a law student qualifying certificate issued by the Board of Regents at Albany, N. Y., to grad- uates of recognized high schools and to those passing Regents' exam- inations in equivalent subjects.

Generally, thirty semester hours of college work, or completion of a pre-legal course entitling the candidate to credit equal thereto, will be required as the equivalent of one college year.

Beginning with September, 1927, two years of college work or its equivalent will be required of students entering the first year class in course for a degree.

The Department of Education issues each year a booklet known as Handbook 27, which contains full information as to the institu- tions recognized by the Regents and the courses which will be ac- cepted as high school equivalents. Copies may be obtained by appli- cation at the School. As the Board of Regents requires certification to it of completed high school or college work on its own forms be- fore the law student qualifying certificate will be issued, applicants are advised to obtain said forms as soon as possible from the Exam- inations and Inspections Division, Educational Building, State De- partment of Education, Albany, New York, and to have the same promptly filled out by the high school or college in which the appli- cant pursued his preliminary studies and returned to the proper department of the Board of Regents. Otherwise serious delay in obtaining the necessary credentials may ensue. 8 Fordham University

ADVANCED STANDING

Students complying with the foregoing requirements for admis- sion to the School, who have, in addition, successfully pursued the study of law for at least one academic year in a law school main- taining standards satisfactory to the School of Law, may, on sub- mission of a proper certificate showing successful completion of such work be admitted to advanced standing. No student will be admitted to advanced standing beyond the second year without the special permission of the Dean.

SPECIAL STUDENTS

A limited number of persons, having a law student qualifying certificate issued by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, but not otherwise qualified for admission as hereinabove set forth, will be accepted as special students, not candi- dates for a degree, on presenting such evidence as the school may require of their fitness to study law. Generally such students must be qualified by reason of age and other experience so as not to im- pede the work of the class. The admission of such students, how- ever, is not encouraged.

Arrangements may be made also with students who desire to pursue specially one or more courses at regular lecture hours.

PRE-LEGAL COURSE

The University conducts on the same floor with the School of Law, a pre-legal course deemed by us the equivalent of one year of college work. The hours of this equivalent course are 6 p. m. to

9 p. m. from Monday to Friday inclusive. The subjects embraced include the following: American History, Economics, English, Logic, Epistemology, General Ethics, Public Speaking, and one elective lan- guage course.

Candidates for this course must have or be entitled to a law stu- dent qualifying certificate issued by the Board of Regents at Albany.

The fees for this course are as follows : The registration and

University fee, Five Dollars each ; tuition fee, One Hundred and Fifty Dollars; all payable on the same terms as the fees and tuition of the School of Law as hereinafter noted.

Applicants for registration may apply at Room 2866, Woolworth Building, New York. School of Law 9

EXAMINATIONS AND GRADES

Written examinations are held at the end of each semester in all subjects completed therein and as essential parts thereof. Class-

room work, so far as practicable, is also a determinant of general standing. Examinations are conducted on every week day. The hours of examination for all classes will be from 4.00 p. m. to 7.00 p. m. ex- cept that the hours on Saturdays will be from 2.00 p. m. to 5.00 p. m. Excessive absences from lectures will bar the student from ex- amination. Students must present themselves for examination at the exam- ination held immediately upon completion of every subject unless excused by the Dean. Omission to do so will constitute a failure of such examination by the student. The standing of students will be indicated by the letters A, B, C, D and F, signifying Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor and Failure respectively. A paper of exceptional merit will be marked A+. Failed or omitted examinations aggregating more than two ma- jor courses or their equivalent will constitute a failed year. In such case, if the student desires to remain in the School, repetition of the full year, both in course and by successful examination, will be re- quired. Notice of intention to repeat must be given by the student before August 25. Failed or omitted examinations aggregating not more than two major courses or their equivalent may be retaken at the next condi- tioned examinations only. If again failed or omitted the student will be required to repeat the subject. Failure to pass or omission to take the first examination offered in a repeated course or in any course in a repeated year will require the student's withdrawal from the school. Examinations for removal of conditions are held on the five days immediately following Labor Day.

Where a student's standing is generally of such low grade as to indicate, in the opinion of the Dean, that he cannot continue the work of the School with profit, his withdrawal from the School will be required. To continue in good standing a student must maintain an average grade of at least C. LAW LIBRARY

The library is now housed on the Broadway front of our quar- ters, with steady natural light by day, and the most modern system of shaded artificial light for evening work. 10 Fordham University

The location of the space, on the twenty-eighth floor, looking east, with an unbroken view for many miles, and with quiet assured by the height above the street and the solid walls separating the library from the other rooms, all contribute to its attractiveness.

The library is open throughout the year to the students of the

School of Law and its alumni after 9.30 a. m.

PRIZES

In every class the student attaining the highest average in recita- tions and examinations will be awarded a prize of fifty dollars ($50.00) in gold.
