HealthServicesEnglish.indd 3 24/02/2010 10:37:13 AM OHIP- Health Plan The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers most of the cost, but some services are not fully covered by OHIP. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is available to newcomers, but they have to wait 3 months before they get their health card. Below is the OHIP’s link & locations of OHIP offices in Peel/Halton: Ontario Peel Region Halton Region www.health.gov.on.ca Mississauga: Milton: 2nd floor, 1-866-5323161 1151 Dundas Street West, 2800 Highpoint Drive 1-866-5323161 TTY Unit 14 1-800-267-8097 1-888-376-5197 Oakville: 220 North Service Road West, Unit P5030 1-888-376-5197

Newcomers have the option of buying private health insurance if they are not yet covered by OHIP. Private insurance should be ideally arranged either before landing or within 5 days of arrival to avoid possible high rates later. The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) www www.clhia.ca Lists private health insurance companies. 416-777-2221 1-800-268-8099

Travel Insurance for Canadians with OHIP OHIP has a very limited funding for health costs incurred outside Canada. OHIP will pay a limited amount ONLY for an acute emergency that arose outside Canada and requires immediate attention. It is recommended that additional health insurance plans are purchased from a private health insurance before travelling outside of Canada.(See above)

Walk-In Clinics & Urgent Care Centres A Walk-In Clinic is a clinic where care is provided for patients with uncomplicated and non-emergency needs. Walk- In-Clinics provide a range of services which are similar to those provided at an individual’s family physician’s office. Clinic hours usually include evenings and weekends and often don’t require an appointment. Urgent Care Centres are different from Walk-In-Clinics, which provide services to patients for non-life threatening conditions during the day, in the evening and on weekends. Urgent Care Centres provide diagnosis and treatment (except surgery), which may include casts, eye care, laboratory/diagnostics, stitches, and X-Ray. *For a list of Walk-In Clinics/Urgent Care Centres visit Ontario Ministry of Health And Long-Term Care website: www.hco-on.ca*
