LAST YEAR’ S RUN TO THE FAB FOUR

Hey Lady Tiger Basketball fans! I was asked to write about our exciting run in the NAIA National Tournament last year and give you guys my personal perspective on the whole experience. I’m sure a lot of people didn’t expect us to have a very successful outing at the tournament given the fact that we lost our starting point guard to a second, terrible injury midseason and we had a notsosuccessful conference tournament that we don’t really like to mention…But we definitely surprised many, proved a lot of people wrong and made memories that will no doubt, last a lifetime. As you probably know, the tournament was held in Billings, Montana. Here is just a little background information on Billings. It is approximately 1,600 miles from Campbellsville to Billings. If you drive straight through without stopping, it would take a little over 23 hours. Billings’ altitude is around 3,123 feet. To put this into perspective, Campbellsville’s altitude is about 814 feet. Billings is also outlined by a rimrock. The rimrock literally formed a highrising rim of rock around the city. At the top of the rimrock is where the planes flew in and out. When we arrived in Billings we couldn’t waste much time. We had to get a couple of practices in for a couple of reasons. First, we had to prepare for our firstround, and quite familiar opponent, Talladega College, who we had already played twice in the regular season. Second, we had to get used to the elevation and thin air of Montana. Our practices and film sessions were very focused, but filled with anxiousness because everyone knows it’s hard to beat a good team three times in one season. Aside from practices and film sessions, we had a day to volunteer. We were asked to speak to the kids at a small school, Meadowlark Elementary. The kids and faculty were awesome. They all assembled in the gym where we talked about what it takes to be a collegiate student athlete. We answered any questions that they had and even had a dance party. They were great hosts and even stood in the halls as we were leaving, giving us high fives and cheering for Campbellsville while we wore the shirts they gave us all that had a picture of the state of Montana on it with Meadowlark Elementary pinpointed on it. It’s game day. Everyone is nervous, but eager to get out on the floor. As a senior, I was coming to terms that it could possibly be my last game. I was going to do everything in my power to not let that happen, and I knew my team was right behind me. As we prepare to run out for game time, I look around at all the people in Rimrock Arena. There were a few extremely dedicated families that made the trip to Billings to watch their fellow LTB players. Some flew and others made the crosscountry drive, enduring snow storms and snowy and icy roads along the way. Others, we knew, were streaming the game from home. However, there were some surprise guests. Meadowlark Elementary. Eventually, a sea of kids would be seated right behind our bench cheering and chanting for us. But now, they would make a human tunnel for us to run out in, giving us all highfives. Meadowlark Elementary made us feel like we had the hometeam advantage. Another neat thing that I noticed were all the extra fans. These fans weren’t there for a particular team, they were just citizens of the Billings community. They had heard about the NAIA National Tournament and wanted to hang out to watch some good basketball. Most fans would pick their favorite teams and cheer for them. This was what made Billings stand out compared to the past national tournaments that I had been a part of. It’s game time. As we start the game, we quickly figure out that our couple of practices getting use to the elevation and thin air did not do a lot of good, but the same was true for Talladega. Everyone was getting winded quickly. The game was close the whole time. We would finally pull away, but it was never a comfortable lead. But we did it. 8475. We survived round 1, beating a very good team for the third time that year.

Some friends and families waited until after the first round to make the trip up to Billings. Once again, a couple made the crosscountry drive, others flew, and one person even suffered during the last 30 minutes of their flight after someone got sick all over them and their neighboring passengers. You know who you are. You are dedicated. Next up, Baker University. Baker was a team full of shooters. Everyone on the court was a threat from 3, from the point guard to practically all the posts. This put a little worry in our minds because we knew that in the past, our special halfcourt zone defense that we run had struggled when we played a team that shot the ball very well. In practice, we emphasized our defense and how important it was to pressure shooters. Come game time, that is exactly what we did. We played the best defense we had played all year. It won us the game. We had 11 steals and we forced them to shoot 28% from 3 and turn it over 20 times. Final score 8475.

Now the fun part. Next up, FreedHardeman University. I’m sure most of you remember the last time we played Freed. 2015? Fab Four? Undefeated, overall number 1 seed? Sounds kind of familiar, doesn’t it? Last year was almost identical. We were playing Freed, the undefeated and overall LAST YEAR’ S RUN TO THE FAB FOUR number 1 seed, to get to the Fab Four. This team was very good and experienced. Our defense had to be the best yet. Just as good, or better than our defense against Baker, with not even a full day’s rest for our legs. It’s game time. Nerves are through the roof. Thoughts of the possibility that it could be my last game are still in the back of my mind. But I couldn’t think about that. I had to focus on Freed. When we start the game, we don’t look back. Our defense is very good, just like it was against Baker. We are everywhere and Freed has no idea what to do. They are making mistakes they wouldn’t normally make. Before halftime they make a little come- back and we have a onepoint lead. 2120. Before the game during film and practice, Coach Colvin and Hootie told us that Freed always plays their best game in the second half. So, we knew we couldn’t let up any. And we did just that. Everyone that came on the floor did something huge for us and had tons of energy. Of course, Freed played better in the second half and adjusted to our defense. It’s the 4th quarter and down to the wire. We’re down 6970. With around a minute left, Madison Clements gets fouled. 2 shots. Everyone on the bench has their arms locked. Coach can’t even watch. The tension is high. She drains both. 7170. All we have to do is get a stop and get the ball back. We do it. We got a stop. I have the ball and someone fouls me. 2 shots. I’ve never felt so much pressure in my 17 years of playing basketball. I could hardly feel my legs. I walk up to the line. Little do I know everyone on the bench has their arms locked, some are praying, some can’t even watch. Our prays were answered. I hit both. We’re up 3. 7370. All we have to do is get a stop. I’m currently guarding a post player around 6’2” because two of our posts fouled out. They need a three. Our guards pressured theirs, forcing a deep three. It hits rim, the ball gets tapped around and they throw up a desperation shot from inside the arc. Air ball. We get the rebound and the buzzer sounds. We survived!! The bench rushes out on the court. Everyone is hugging one another, with tears of built up emotions and happiness streaming down everyone’s faces. We go back to the locker room and hear one of Coach Colvin’s legendary speeches. We made it back to the Fab Four. Social media is crazy. Everyone from friends, family, classmates, past coaches, past teachers, and professors are sending texts, tweets, Facebook posts, and text messages from back home congratulating us on another historical win. We even heard that some students back on campus were asking when the vans were leaving so they could head to Billings to cheer us on. If it wasn’t so far and so expensive to make the trip, a lot of students would have been there to support us. The feeling we were experiencing was unreal. Just like the time we beat Freed in 2015. This is where the hashtag and saying #RememberThatFeeling came into play. The feeling we were experiencing at that time, just like the feeling we had in 2015, can’t be beat. There is nothing like it. There is nothing like beating a number one ranked team with teammates you love and have worked hard with every single day since you stepped on campus. Even though we could have celebrated for days, we had to get serious. We had to face another familiar opponent in the Fab Four. Oklahoma City. The same team we played in 2015 for the national championship. This would be the perfect time to get some revenge. Its game day. There’s so many nerves, but even more excitement. OKC is a big, long team. They are very solid with two great players. Throughout the game we had a hard time adjusting to their length and the athleticism of their two best players. As soon as we would make a run, they would make a run. We came up short, losing 7887. Us seniors had played our last game. It was a sad and emotional time in the locker room after the game to say the least, but we couldn’t help but try to keep our heads up because we had just made yet another historical run in LTB history. I mean, we were coming home with a SemiFinalist trophy!! To celebrate our run, Coach Colvin and Hootie took us to Yellowstone National Park. It was a couple of hours from Billings, but it was totally worth it. We experienced the beautiful mountains of Montana and Wyoming and took selfies with wild bison and elk just hanging out in the roads. There was also a gift shop we went it and most everyone got some sort of souvenir to take back home. Many got shirts, some got stickers, others got snow globes, but Madison Faulkner got bear claw slippers. She still wears them occasionally...Anyways, over all, it was a great way to end that unforgetta- ble trip and my basketball career, even though I really wish it wasn’t over. Before I’m finished, I would like to thank all the LTB fans, all my team- mates, and Coach Colvin and Hootie for all their support over the span of my career at Campbellsville University. Being a transfer coming in midway through the season was a tough adjustment, but everyone made my transition so easy. Being a part of Lady Tiger Basketball is very special and I’m thankful that Coach and Hootie took me in and treated me like one of their own, doing everything they could to make me and every other LTB member successful on and off the floor. LTB will always be my second family. Thanks for the incredible journey, Emily Fox
