BY RICHARD EVANS SCHULTES During the past fifteen or twenty years, plant exp.oration in Co- lombia has been greatly intensified. The number of collections, espe- cially from the high Andean regions of the country, is now very much more comprehensive; and monographic. and floristic proj ects should find in this trend strong impetus and keen encouragement. The very task of routine identification of plant collections often uncovers sig- nificant intorrnation. Frequently, species or genera turn up which are new either to Colombia or to a given phytogeographic province of the country. Some of the exploration along frontier regions has resulted in the discovery in Colombia of species known only from neighbouring co- untries. This is especially so in the case of the orchids which have been collected in eastern or Amazonian Colombia, many of which have been reported hitherto only from Brazil or Peru. There is every reason to believe that the total number of orchids known from Co- lombia will be markedly increased as recent collections receive cri- tical attention. In 1920, Schlechter (Schlechter, R. in Repert. Sp Nov. Beih. 7 (1920) listed as known from Colombia 1293 species of orchids. The f'o'ilowing notes, chiefly on Colombian species, are based upon material preserved in the Orchid Herbarium of Oakes Ames in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University. Identification of the specimens discussed has been made by Mr. Charles Schweinfurth, Mr. Gordon de Wolf, Mr. Leslie A. Garay or the writer. The, genera. and under them the species, are arranged alphabetically. -

Relationships among all subtribes of Neotropical Cymbidieae (Orchidaceae) were estimated using combined matK/ycf1 plastid sequence data for 289 taxa. The matrix was analyzed using RAxML. Bootstrap (BS) analyses yield 100% BS support for all subtribes except Stanhopeinae (87%). Generic relationships within subtribes are highly resolved and are generally congruent with those presented in previous studies and as summarized in Genera Orchidacearum. Relationships among subtribes are largely unresolved. The Szlachetko generic classification of Maxillariinae is not supported. A new combination is made for Maxillaria cacaoensis J.T.Atwood in Camaridium. The fifth chapter of the series about Rudolf Schlechter’s South-American orchids introduces us to those botanists and orchid collectors who travelled and worked in Ecuador and Peru and supplied Schlechter with many of the new orchid species he described. As in previous chapters, the biographies and accomplishments of these travellers are preceded by brief geographical and historical outlines for each of these countries. It is worth mentioning that the lives and orchids of such prominent figures in the orchidology of South America as F.C. Lehmann, W. Hennis, E. Bungeroth and E. Ule, who collected in Ecuador and Peru, have already been mentioned in previous chapters and are therefore omitted here. Illumina sequencing followed by de novo assembly was used in this study, and the plastid genetic information of Calanthe s.l. was used to investigate the adaptive evolution of this taxon. Herein, the complete plastome of five Calanthe s.l. species (Calanthe davidii, Styloglossum lyroglossa, Preptanthe rubens, Cephalantheropsis obcordata, and Phaius tankervilliae) were determined, and the two other published plastome sequences of Calanthe s.l. were added for comparative analyses to examine the evolutionary pattern of the plastome in the alliance. The seven plastomes ranged from 150,181 bp (C. delavayi) to 159,014 bp (C. davidii) in length and were all mapped as circular structures. Except for the three ndh genes (ndhC, ndhF, and ndhK ) lost in C. delavayi, the remaining six species contain identical gene orders and numbers (115 gene). Nucleotide diversity was detected across the plastomes, and we screened 14 mutational hotspot regions, including 12 non-coding regions and two gene regions. Two new species of Crocodeilanthe, C. dewildei and C. steinbachii, three new species of Masdevallia, M. calochrysos, M. driesseniana and M. rostriflora, and one new species of Pleurothallis, P. amentacea, are described and illustrated. Ants tend ghost orchids: patrolling of Dendrophylax lindenii (Orchidaceae) by Crematogaster ashmeadi in Florida Peter R. Houlihan1,5,*, Andrea Lucky2, Mike Owen3, and Thomas C. Emmel1,2,4,6 Abstract Myriad symbioses exist between insects and orchids, especially in tropical forests where the majority of species are epiphytic. Relationships be- tween ants and rare epiphytic orchids are underrepresented in the scientific literature. The natural history and ecological entomology of Florida’s endangered and epiphytic ghost orchid, Dendrophylax lindenii (Lindley) Bentham ex Rolfe (Orchidaceae), remain limited. Widely recognized for long-standing hypotheses concerning the species’ pollination ecology, that documentation recently overturned, other interactions between insects and ghost orchids are scarce. Here we describe the first associations between ants, Crematogaster ashmeadi Mayr (Hymenoptera: For- micidae), and D. lindenii. Ghost orchid roots provide facultative and opportunistic structures for arboreal ants to use in nesting. Furthermore, excrement from ant colonies within the root mass can increase nutrient availability in the orchid’s nutrient-poor substrate; the proximity of these ants permits patrolling to defend the plant and exert control over possible extra floral nectaries that require further inquiry. This study presents novel observations that expand the known insect associations with ghost orchids, elucidating the complex ecology of one of Florida’s rarest and most endangered species. Three species of Orchidaceae are described as new to science: a Telipogon and a Lankesterella from the Dominican Republic and an Encyclia from Cuba. Telipogon niri is based on material collected by Donald Dod from the Cordillera Central A rare species, T. niri was previously recognized as Stellilabium minutiflorum (Kraenzl.) Garay, a distinct species from Central America. The generic name has changed due to unequivocal molecular evidence offered by Norris Williams, and the specific epithet honors Dr. Mark Nir, an avid student of Caribbean orchids. Lankesterella glandula is also based on material collected by Dod from the Cordillera Central. Thus far known only from the type collection, it is the second representative of the genus in Hispaniola. Encyclia monteverdensis is described from 19th century Charles Wright collections from Monte Verde, Cuba. The combination, Dendrophylax filiformis (Sw.) Carlsward & Whitten, suffers as a later homonym and is replaced by the next available name in the new combination Dendrophylax mon- teverdi (Rchb. f.) Ackerman & Nir. Cyclopogon miradorensis Schltr. is reported for the island of Dominica; Cranichis ricartii Ackerman is noted for the island of Guadeloupe; Cranichis ovata Wickstr. and Psilochilus macrophyllus (Lindl.) Mr. Auguste R. Endrés: Not A Journey into the life and work of the greatest orchidologist to ever visit Costa Rica FRANCO PUPULIN, CARLOS OSSENBACH AND RUDOLPH JENNY “WE GREATLY REGRET TO HEAR OF THE DEATH OF THE EXCELLENT BOTANICAL COLLECTOR, M. ENDRES. WE ARE PROMISED AN ACCOUNT OF HIS CAREER FROM PROF. Reichenbach.” (ANONYMOUS, 1875). With these scanty words, and the promise of a note on his orchidologic journey — that will never be written — botany took leave of A.R. Endrés in May 1875. His name, variously spelled as Endres, Enderes and Enders, had appeared sporadically in the Gardener’s Chronicle since 1871, associated with orchid novelties, mostly just botanical curiosities, surfacing from Costa Rica. The brief obituary of the Gardener’s Chronicle’s publisher placed a tombstone on the short and obscure career of just another plant collector who had died doing his job. Time can be unfair. It may seem strange to begin our story on Endrés from the end, but — as we will see — during some 150 years it proved to be quite difficult to unravel the story of his life from the beginning, even to find a date and a place to begin the tale of a prodigious man who had a surname, but not a known forename to start with. His end itself has long been a mystery, nothing more than a myth passed from mouth to mouth, according to which Endrés was murdered in Colombia. “Riohacha — a man lies face down near an unplucked orchid” (Kaufman and Kaufman 1999). Franco Pupulin* Abstract A revision of the Costa Rican species pertaining to the genus Kefersteinia RcHB.f. is presented. Phylo- genetic relationships of the genus are discussed. Ten species are accepted for Costa Rica and a key to the species is provided, together with references to the types and synonyms, a detailed description, etymology, general distribution and examined specimens in the study area, ecological notes, taxonomic discussion and a composite illustration for each taxon. A new species, Kefersteinia endresii PUPULIN, is described and illu- strated. Lectotypes are selected for Zygopetalum lacteum RcHB.f., Kefersteinia alba SCHLTR., K. micro- charis SCHLTR. and K. parvilabris SCHLTR. Wita Stwosza 59, 80-308 Gdańsk, Poland. [email protected] Abstract. The floristic, geographical and ecological analysis of the orchid flora of the department of Valle del Cauca are presented. The study area is located in the southwestern Colombia and it covers about 22 140 km2 of land across 4 physiographic units. All analysis are based on the fieldwork and on the revision of the herbarium material. A list of 572 orchid species occurring in the department of Valle del Cauca is presented. Two species, Arundina graminifolia and Vanilla planifolia, are non-native elements of the studied orchid flora. The greatest species diversity is observed in the montane regions of the study area, especially in wet montane forest.
