Norton Community News May 2021 Editors Letter

Hello Readers,

For those of you who have been unable to access the Norton News online over the last year, I am delighted to welcome you back to your little yellow book. It has been a long time coming. It will be lovely to see everybody out and about doing their thing and meeting up with friends and neighbours. The biggest news is the reopening of Skittles, our much loved coffee shop. Our first week open was amazing and very busy. On that subject we would be very grateful if there is anyone out there who would like to join our merry band of helpers and bakers. For more information contact Tricia (her number is on the skittles ads) or just pop into the coffee shop when we are open and meet the team. More good news we are hoping to have the Scarecrow trail back this summer so get your imagination going again. Watch this magazine for more information. Film nights and other events will be returning as and when permitted. I hope you are all staying safe and well and I would like to say thank you to all the amazing people in the village who have reached out to help people that have needed it, including myself. A big thankyou also to Lynne and her loyal team of delivery people who will be bringing your Norton News to your door.

Page 1 Letter from the May 2021 Village Hall Chairman

As I stated in my April letter the Coffee Shop was to open on April 13, Wow, what an opening, the place was buzzing and despite limited seating and a chill in the air it was non stop, thank you to all of you who turned up and supported the Coffee Shop, and especially all of the Volunteers who worked tirelessly inside and outside to make it happen, I was late to the party and couldn't get a seat! All in all it was a fantastic first week of reopening and long may it continue, and don't forget all being well from May 17 we will be able to seat everyone inside as well, but probably with the previous restrictions, so I look forward to the PM,s announcement on Monday 10th May.

A few of the regular hiring groups have returned and post May 17 most of the other groups will return also, so we are on the road to normality, (or are we), it will be great to have the whole hall busy again and as you can imagine there has been much contact for bookings, and I thank Joan for dealing with such matters.

I hope you are enjoying the sunny days and let's hope for a long and warm Summer, but don't forget be safe and well.

We had a lovely end to a brilliant half term. The children had shown their resilience throughout their time in school and have adjusted beautifully. They have all been so excited to be back in school, being able to interact with their friends and do some excellent learning.

InKS1wewerefocussingontheGreatFireofLondon.Wehavebeenamazedwith their knowledge and excitement towards the topic. Throughout the topic we managed to produce lots of artwork. This included making some building silhouettes in front of the burning fire, as well as some Tudor Houses.

Our value throughout the half term has been forgiveness, with a focus on the Easter Story. The children retold it by making a story booklet and spoke about ways in which Jesus forgave others. We spoke about ways we could forgive others as well as scenarios when we may have to forgive someone.

FORD FARM CONSULTATION Over 60 people joined the online community consultation on the 8th of April at 7:30, this included 4 representatives from the Parish Council, Graham Withnell, Nita Wyatt, Paula Knott (Planning sub-committee) and Adrian Jones. Two of our 3 District Councillors Ed Firmin and Andy Sully also joined the consultation. The Parish council will continue to consult with the developer and Crest Nicholson to ensure the views of the Parishioners are heard, respected, and represented throughout the planning and development process. We will post regular updates and public meetings on the Norton Facebook page and the Parish Council website. The primary concerns and questions raised on the 8th were as follows,

· Exacerbation of flooding on site and affecting existing properties downstream · The height of properties within the development · Play areas and green spaces · The S106 or Community Infrastructure Levy monies from the development · Parking and traffic including obstruction on the bypass due to parking and access to the new road · Community facilities such as a pub or café/meeting place · Loss of green space · Difficulty in acquiring home insurance due to the flood risk Parish Council meetings going forward Local Councils which includes Parish Councils have been instructed that from 8th May, 2021 public parish meetings have to return to being held face to face. The Annual Parish meeting and the AGM will be held virtually on Wednesday 5th May but the meeting due on the 2nd June will be held at the village hall following restrictions that are in place at that time.

Response to Unitary Authority propositions The Parish Council urges all residents to please send in their views to the two proposals for either one Council County Council’s ‘One Somerset’ bid or the two Councils ‘Stronger Somerset’ from the District Councils to: [email protected]

Our next meeting on Wednesday 5th May will incorporate the Annual Parish meeting which will commence at 7pm and where a resident can raise any local issue. Immediately following will be the Annual Parish Council meeting (AGM) at approximately 8pm. These meetings will be virtual.

For this reason, to give everyone a fair chance of securing places, we are having to introduce a system under which bookings can be made no earlier than 2 weeks before the date of the service. We hope that you will all understand. In case you are unable to secure places, we direct you to the options available online: weekly 10.30am Sunday Worship, and 9.00am Morning Prayer from Monday to Thursday, detailed in the List of Services in these pages. We are very grateful to Paul, once again, for making this possible. You will have noticed that we have been unable for a while to fly any flags from our flagpole on the tower of All Saints, and that we were unable to do so to mark the sad period of national mourning following the death of HRH The DukeofEdinburghearlierthismonth.Weapologiseforthis.Thepulleyatop our flagpole is broken, and the whole pole has to be disassembled and then securedonanewbaseontopofthetower.Thisisnoeasytaskatthatheight, but we are working on a plan for its repair. Finally, as we head towards summer with the prospect of warmer weather and, perhaps, a relaxation of the current Covid restrictions, we are working with Paul on plans for some outdoor services of worship, at All Saints and also at St John’s Staplegrove, starting in early June. Details of these will be published widely in due course, so keep a lookout! Andrew Ritchie and Pam Wreford 20 April 2021
