2018 Resource Centre Report
Resource Centre support for East Brighton groups doubles in 2018 Resource Centre support work with volunteer run community groups in East Brighton area has almost doubled in the last year. We have continued to provide essential support with our Accounts Examination and Design & Print service. In addition, demand for on-to-one support and consultancy, in all aspects of running a group, has more than doubled. It has been inspiring to see so many new groups, run entirely by local people, emerging and finding their feet over the last year. This adds to the many groups that continue to do what they do so well, understanding the needs of their community and taking action to support local people and bring them together. One-to-one support and consultancy We provided 56 one-to-one support sessions (compared to 22 in the previous year) to 20 different groups. Seven of these groups are either new or had never used the Resource Centre before. Collectively, they help and improve the wellbeing of a wide range of local people from ‘the cradle to the grave’ and lots of people in between. They help improve the local woods, parks and outdoor spaces; provide lunches for children, families and older people; organise events that are free to local people; provide art and dance activities; run community buildings; investigate local history; create newsletters; and provide a hub where local people can come together to build networks and friendships. We supported groups to draft constitutions, policies and procedures; think about legal structures and report to the Charity Commission; keep their accounts and prepare their budgets; improve their communication and use of social media; apply for funding and evaluate their projects. -

Update: 15 January YOUR HEALTHWATCH Dental services Healthwatch Brighton and Hove asked local people to tell us about their experiences of dental care from September to December 2020, and 56 people responded. You can access our findings here. We are receiving a large number of queries asking how to find an NHS dentist. Dental services remain under pressure and full services have not yet resumed and have once again been impacted by the current lockdown. We are working with NHS England, who commission dental services, to get better information and will share this with you as soon as we get this. In the meantime, please email us with any questions and we will do our best to help [email protected] COVID vaccine A reminder that we have created a dedicated webpage on the Healthwatch Brighton and Hove website which is being regularly updated. However, the agricultural sector is not a current focus for greenhouse gas reduction. The wine industry is growing and contributes to agricultural emissions. It is therefore important to understand how wine producers can increase their use of low carbon practices to minimise their carbon footprint. To understand how the new and expanding wine region of Sussex can reduce its carbon footprint, I first used a literature review to determine the stages of wine production with the biggest carbon footprint, which are vine growing and bottling. Next, I carried out a wine industry practice review coupled with a questionnaire answered by six global low carbon leaders to find out how and why they are reducing their carbon footprint. I found that they use a variety of low carbon vineyard practices and mainly low carbon lightweight bottles. -

Underground Sussex Growing the value of tourism in West Sussex A report identifying options for delivering tourism growth through collaboration for the Coastal West Sussex Partnership Underground Sussex Growing the value of tourism in West Sussex 1 Executive Summary The areas covered by Coastal West Sussex (CWS) are tourism destinations with a positive future. They hold assets that tourists believe to be great and there is a rich variety of events, festivals, attractions and experiences that are highly valued by visitors from around the UK and overseas. However they could and should do better. Their rich natural and cultural assets and their proximity to London and the South East, mean there is potential for tourism to grow further, contributing more jobs and greater economic impact to the Coastal West Sussex area. Local partners should aim for tourism growth in the Coastal West Sussex area to exceed that expected in the UK over the next four years. This should be done by generating new demand and creating year- round visitor flows, reducing the seasonal imbalance that currently restricts growth in the local visitor economy. A summary vision for the partnership could be ‘Driving more staying visitors to explore Coastal West Sussex throughout the year’. This growth should be achieved through changes to the pattern of tourism that include: • Converting day to staying visitors; • Delivering higher yield business tourism; • Achieving a better seasonal balance of business; • Establishing events to plug seasonal gaps; • Focusing on higher socio-economic groups from source markets; and • Attracting more international visitors (day from London as well as staying). -

Experience West Sussex Supports Local Tourism English Tourism Week 2021 Supporting English Tourism Week, 22 – 31 May, the Experience West Sussex team is highlighting the importance and often under-valued contribution the sector makes. The tourism industry in West Sussex was worth over £2.1 billion to the local economy in 2019 and growing, with an increase of £6.5 million from 2018. Over 38k people were directly employed in the industry. In 2020 the COVID- 19 pandemic hit hard and continues to have a devastating impact on tourism in the county, UK and worldwide. The many lockdowns that we have all endured have only served to emphasize how much people miss their freedom to travel and enjoy days out, short breaks and holidays when it is taken away from them and how important it is to keep this sector buoyant. Throughout 2020/2021 the Experience West Sussex Partnership (EWSP), the central voice for the region on tourism, destination management and the visitor economy, has continued to support the local tourism and hospitality businesses so badly affected by the pandemic. The EWS website has added a new Industry Support section, featuring the latest Government and Visit Britain advice and information on the pandemic, as well as details on where businesses can find expert help, funding opportunities, toolkits, webinars and online courses. During lockdowns, the Zoom networking drop-in sessions were particularly well-received by those struggling to manage. Cash-strapped businesses requested help with marketing during and after lockdowns and EWS were able to roll out a series of campaigns including #WestSussexWishlist and #RediscoverWestSussex utilising video assets, e-newsletters, digital ads and social media to keep West Sussex front of mind when visits were allowed. -
