Document generated on 10/02/2021 3:45 a.m. Études françaises Regard et prédation dans Film de Samuel Beckett De la fable à la structure Llewellyn Brown Le regard et la proie Article abstract Volume 54, Number 2, 2018 If the problematic of the gaze is capital in Beckett’s work, it is in his only film – with its rhematic title – that it becomes the thrust of a pursuit. In discovering a URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1050587ar new medium, he resumes an earlier setup involving the representation of DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1050587ar “traversable space:” that of the quest. The recourse to the famous actor Buster Keaton is part of this choice that makes of the film a fable. If a “theoretical” See table of contents (Berkeley) background is exploited by Beckett, the gaze is read here as an object, as theorized by Lacan, who contends that each one is subjected to an all-seeing gaze, before being constituted as a subject. Beckett considers the camera as a penetrating and impersonal agent. In Film, we see the reality constituted by the Publisher(s) imaginary give way to the intrusion of this gaze. In the absence of an original Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal assent of the Other, the Beckettian subject remains irremediably split, a fact that allows, in this film, to make the gaze a “character” in its own right: the Eye of the camera, which pursues the character, called Object (O). The former is subjectivity ISSN devoid of visible form, the latter is visibility devoid of interiority.

Press Information September | October 2016 Half a century of modern French crime thrillers and Samuel Beckett and Buster Keaton 's collaboration of the century in the year of 1965; the politically aware work of documentary filmmaker Helga Reidemeister and the seemingly apolitical "hipster" cinema of the Munich Group between 1965 and 1970: these four topics will launch the 2016/17 season at the Austrian Film Museum. Furthermore, the Film Museum will once again take part in the Long Night of the Museums (October 1); a new semester of our education program School at the Cinema begins on October 13, and the upcoming publications ( Alain Bergala's book The Cinema Hypothesis and the DVD edition of Josef von Sternberg's The Salvation Hunters ) are nearing completion. Latest Film Museum restorations are presented at significant film festivals – most recently, Karpo Godina's wonderful "film-poems" (1970-72) were shown at the Cinema Ritrovato festival in Bologna – the result of a joint restoration project conducted with Slovenska kinoteka. As the past, present and future of cinema have always been intertwined in our work, we are particularly glad to announce that Michael Palm's new film Cinema Futures will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2 – the last of the 21 projects the Film Museum initiated on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 2014. Choice of Arms The French Crime Thriller 1958–2009 To start off the season, the Film Museum presents Part 2 of its retrospective dedicated to French crime cinema. Around 1960, propelled by the growth spurt of the New Wave, the crime film was catapulted from its "classical" period into modernity.

  • Le Memorie Di Un Film Notfilm Di Ross Lipman
Venezia Arti [online] ISSN 2385-2720 Vol. 26 – Dicembre 2017 [print] ISSN 0394-4298 Le memorie di un Film Notfilm di Ross Lipman Martina Zanco Abstract It’s been five decades since Film was first shown at the 26th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. Yet the 1965 short film, directed by Alain Schneider and based on the only script written for the big screen by Samuel Beckett, enjoys a new wave of interest. Digitally restored in 4k by filmmaker, archivist, preservationist and performer Ross Lipman, Film has began to tour the world once again, showing in many theaters, festivals and Cinematheques thanks to the tireless work of newly founded distribution company Reading Bloom and, well established, Milestone Films. This has re-opened discussion on the enigmatic short feature that, inspired from the metaphysical doctrine of irish philosopher George Berkeley, esse est percipi, sees an ‘Object’ (that is, the main character portrayed by Buster Keaton ) shadowed by an ‘Eye’. The main interest though, is in part due to the kino-essay, which is not a simple documentary, by Ross Lipman. In Notfilm, a documentary showed after Film at every screening, the director shows us the unseen cuts, unreleased material, photos, notes and audio recordings he rediscovered during the restoration process of the short film that raise an array of new, challenging questions (is Beckett Keaton alter ego?). Furthermore, this cine-essay seems to have another hidden layer, seemingly more ambitious and personal, that tries to go beyond Film itself. This is an aspect that, I think, is worth investigating.

  • 101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Waterloo Library Journal Publishing Service (University of Waterloo, Canada) Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Art of Film By Tadeusz Miczka Spring 1997 Issue of KINEMA ”WE LIVE IN THE WORLD LACKING IDEA ON ITSELF: KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI’s ART OF FILM” OUR ”little stabilization” -- this ironic phrase by Tadeusz Różewicz, the poet and playwright, rightly charac- terized the low living standards of Poles and the state of apathy of the society in the 1960s. It also reflected well the situation of the Polish culture which, at that time, was put under strong political pressure and, except for very few instances, half- truths and newspeak replaced the clear dichotomy of truth and falsity. However, it finds its strongest expression if seen against the background of the Polish cinema ofthattime, since the cinema was, so to say, the ”light in the eyes” of the Workers’ Party activists devoutly building the ’real socialism’ state. After the period of the political thaw which, among other things, brought to life artistically courageous works of the ’Polish film school’, the political authorities again demanded to be the only power shaping people’s opinions and their style of life in the country. The film art could meet viewers’ needs only to a very small extent. Its major task however, was to shape those needs and that is why cinema was part of the mechanism used for indoctrinating the society. Very few film directors were able to liberate themselves from the rigid ideological rules and fight the censorship efficiently.

  • A Short Film About Love (1988)
A Short Film About Love (1988) “I believe the life of every person is worthy of scrutiny, containing its own secrets and dramas.” Krzysztof Kieslowski Major Credits: Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski Screenplay: Krzysztof Kieslowski and Krzysztof Piesiewicz Music: Zbigniew Preisner Cast: Grazyna Szapolowska (Magda), Olaf Lubaszenko (Tomek), Stefania Iwinska (Godmother) Background: In 1988, after an apprenticeship making documentaries and a decade of increasingly ambitious and critically acclaimed art films, Kieslowski embarked on an astonishing project to create a 10-part series based on the Ten Commandments for Polish television. The Decalogue, which he co-wrote with his friend Krzysztof Piesiewicz, directed (using nine different cinematographers), and edited within twenty-one months, remains one of the great achievements in the history of cinema. During the same period, he shot additional footage and released two theatrical features, this film and the equally powerful A Short Film About Killing, based on the Fifth Commandment. Each of the 55-minute films constituting The Decalogue applies the Biblical commandment, interpreted loosely in some cases rather than literally, to the daily lives of ordinary citizens living in a stark, Soviet-styled apartment complex in the midst of Warsaw. Occasionally, characters from earlier or later episodes can be glimpsed in the margins or background of the frame. All of the episodes save one include the brief appearance of the same anonymous young man (called by Kieslowski scholar Annette Insdorf, the “angel”), who quietly observes events but never intrudes, a silent witness who might remind viewers of God’s unrelenting gaze. Here, he can be seen on the street watching Tomek deliver milk after Magda agrees to their date and later when he has been humiliated.
