The Ultimo power station (which now houses the museum) dates back to 1899 when it was built to power Sydney's electric tram system. The power station operated until the trams were removed from Sydney's streets in 1963. After an eight year transformation in the 1980s, the Powerhouse now presents a magnificent backdrop to the museum's collection of planes, trains, ceramics, furniture, steam engines and Australian innovations. Visitors can also explore the frontiers of space in the only exhibition to display Soviet, Chinese and Australian space technology. NASA's life-size space habitation module shows what future life in space will bring, while visitors can also stand below an F1 rocket engine, of the style which sent man to the moon. Sydney Observatory is located on Observatory Hill, Watson Rd in The Rocks. Australia's oldest existing observatory, it has been studying the southern sky for almost 140 years. A branch of the Powerhouse Museum, it has been extensively refurbished and a fascinating new exhibition installed. By the light of the southern stars blends the long tradition of Australian astronomy with the latest developments in this exciting field. The displays include original instruments from the past and present.

Policy Statement: The RTA is the New South Wales State Government agency responsible for management of traffic and safety on the state's road network. The RTA is supportive of special uses of the road network (such as by the film industry) provided that impacts on traffic flow can be appropriately managed and public safety not compromised.

Scope of RTA Interest: In NSW there is a hierarchy of roads ranging from major interstate and regional transport routes, to roads carrying only local traffic. The RTA is responsible for managing State Roads and local government (councils) are responsible for managing regional and local roads. Advice on the classification of roads can be obtained from the contact provided or from local councils. As a rule of thumb, State Roads are the more heavily trafficked urban roads, and rural freeways and highways for the transportation of people and goods. Approval for lane or total road closures of State Roads is a matter for the RTA. However, separate council and police approval for any major film industry activity or special event is mandatory, as councils and police have broader responsibilities to the community to consider. The RTA would involve councils and the Police Service in consideration of any significant road closures. Companies seeking to use the ANZAC Bridge should also ensure that they comply with the requirement of the NSW Premier's department. The RTA manages the traffic signal network on all types of roads and the RTA must be involved in considering and implementing proposals that require modifications to traffic signal operation. The RTA is also responsible for issuing special vehicle permits for over-dimension loads, which are often required by the film industry. Accordingly the RTA may allow filming/ videoing and photography shoots in or on its assets or roads in assitance with the RTA Guidelines for Film Shoots on Major NSW Roads which are available on the net. Contact the RTA for filming on the roadway, pedestrian lane and cycleway of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Contact BridgeClimb for enquiries that involve climbing the bridge.

STACKS OF FACTS ~ 2009/2010 Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Location: Building 24 (end of Chowder Bay Rd), Mosman NSW 2088 Postal address: PO Box 607, Mosman NSW 2088 Primary Contact: Alexandra Terrey Property Officer (FCO) Tel: 02 8969 2162 Fax: 02 8969 2120 Email: [email protected] www.harbourtrust.gov.au Comments: Harbourside and Historic Locations The Harbour Trust manages seven lands around Sydney Harbour, including several former Defence bases. Most of the locations incorporate buildings and spaces in quiet locations that are currently vacant while the Harbour Trust plans their future use. North Head Artillery School, Manly The remarkable parade ground of the Artillery School is defined by simple Art Deco buildings amongst wild bushland that overlooks the harbour. There are barracks accommodation blocks, various institutional buildings with extensive kitchens, three mess halls, a ballroom, a gymnasium, cells, an oval and large vacant sheds. One of the largest sheds on the site, the Gun Park shed, has recently been upgraded to suit small scale studio work. In a very quiet location, the clear span shed has approximate dimensions of 28x18 metres, with a clearance of 5 metres to the side walls and 6.75 metres at the apex. The shed provides excellent access with full-height sliding panel doors with a width of approximately 14 metres on opposite sides and a hardstand area of approximately 4,500 sqm adjacent. Chowder Bay, Mosman Established as the submarine mining depot in the 1890s, Chowder Bay contains a number of historic buildings nestled around the water including a boatshed, a mine store of stone construction and a wharf. Later additions include barracks, classrooms, a lecture theatre, mess hall and offices. 30 Terminal and 10 Terminal, Mosman Former transport depots for the army, these locations offer a wide range of buildings from large sheds through to small timber barracks, huts, and offices. The view of the harbour from 30 Terminal is magnificent. School of Pacific Administration, Mosman The school consists of a cluster of weatherboard buildings connected by undercover walkways and surrounded by Bougainvillea vines and palms. Training Command, Mosman The former army base comprises a number of simple clad buildings incorporating offices, meeting rooms and kitchens. Other features of the site include underground tunnels and a large parade ground with expansive views of the harbour. Woolwich Dock Woolwich Dock extends for nearly three hundred metres in length, cut directly into the sandstone cliff face. The dock and surrounding area has been developed for maritime industrial use and includes large workshops as well as more recent Army buildings. Woolwich Dock is currently leased out to consortium Murlan Noakes: 9925 0306.

Cockatoo Island (and Snapper Island)

STACKS OF FACTS ~ 2009/2010 The island contains remains of a convict prison, houses dating to the 1840s, immense workshop spaces, the historic pumphouse and chimney, two dry docks and many more locations all on one island. There are endless possibilities for filming on Cockatoo Island and the Harbour Trust is looking closely at the possibility of long-term filming facilities for the island. , Vaucluse Access for filming inside the lighthouse is limited as the light still operates and is leased by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The grounds provide a large open space with dramatic views up and down the coast with the lighthouse as a great backdrop. The former Marine Biological Station, Watsons Bay Built at the southern end of Camp Cove in 1881, this timber house with sandstone foundations is a good example of practical colonial architecture. It contains pressed metal walls and ornate fireplaces but requires considerable conservation work. From the house, there are magnificent views over Camp Cove Beach and Sydney Harbour. The FMBS is now privately leased, but the Trust retains a park adjacent.
