Jeep Heritage International Media Program Contact: Michele Callender Ariel Gavilan Jeep® Brand Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary on the Off-road Trails of Moab, Utah June 5, 2011, Auburn Hills, Mich. - In celebration of this milestone and to keep the Jeep® brand momentum alive, the full-line of Jeep 70th Anniversary Edition models – Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Compass, Patriot, Wrangler/Wrangler Unlimited – were presented against the red rock and glistening waters of the Colorado River. Showcasing the evolution and innovation of the legendary 4x4 leader, seven key historical models illustrated important milestones in the Jeep brand’s history – not in a museum, but in the rugged outdoors where they belong: 1944 Willys-Overland “Jeep” MB 1945 Willys-Overland Jeep CJ-2A 1949 Willys-Overland Jeep Station Wagon 1963 Jeep Wagoneer 1984 Jeep Cherokee 1987 Jeep Wrangler 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee In addition, five customized Jeep vehicles fresh from the 45th annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari provided a taste of new potential Jeep production and customization ideas in a true Jeep setting. The Jeep “image” vehicles included were the Wrangler Pork Chop, Wrangler Renegade, Compass Canyon, Cherokee Overland and the Grand Cherokee Off-Road Edition. More than 30 percent of the people who are in the market for a new vehicle are influenced by the vast selection and availability of aftermarket Mopar® accessories, which fit a variety of lifestyles. This international media event produced outstanding photography and b-roll that features Jeep brand vehicles with the breathtaking landscape in Moab. -###- Additional information and news from Stellantis are available at: https://media.stellantisnorthamerica.com .

  • Portable Civilization and Urban Assault Vechicle
Techné 5:2 Winter 2000 Garnar, Portable Civilizations/1 Portable Civilizations and Urban Assault Vehicles Andrew Garnar This paper will analyze the sports utility vehicle (SUV) and its rise in popularity. It will specifically focus on the American middle-class experience of the SUV, since this reveals an intersection between technology, personal identity and society. The paper proceeds as follows: First, there will be an outline of my theoretical framework that has been developed from parts of Joseph Pitt’s philosophy of technology and C. S. Peirce’s theory of signs, followed by the history of the SUV and its relations to personal identity. This will establish my guiding metaphors: ”urban assault vehicle” and “portable civilization.” The significance of these metaphors will become clear toward the conclusion of the paper when I explore how the transactions and transformations between the SUV and owner are both guided by and reconstructing society. In his recent book on the philosophy of technology and in numerous articles, Joseph Pitt argues that technology should be defined as “humanity at work” (Pitt 1983; 1988; 2000). One strength of this very broad definition is that it allows us to see disparate things like governments and buildings as technologies. The automobile, generally, and the SUV, specifically, clearly qualify as technologies. Pitt has recently gone on to argue that human beings are also thoroughly technological; virtually every aspect of human beings are “works” in the same sense as automobiles, bombs and the Constitution (Pitt 1999). Because of the technological nature of human beings, we can speak as Foucault does of “technologies of the self.” Following Foucault, there are technologies: which permit individuals to effect by their own means, or with the help of others, a certain number of operations on their bodies and souls, thoughts, conduct, and way of being, so as to transform themselves in order to attain a certain state of happiness, purity, wisdom, perfection, or immortality (Foucault 1997, 225).

  • ONA Jeep History
Contact: Daniela Ferro Ariel Gavilan Jeep® History January 6, 2016, Auburn Hills, Mich. - In July 1940, the U.S. military informed automakers that it was looking for a “light reconnaissance vehicle” to replace the Army's motorcycle and modified Ford Model-T vehicles. The Army invited 135 manufacturers to bid on production and developed a lengthy specification list for the vehicle, including the following: 600-lb. (272 kg) load capacity Wheelbase less than 75 inches (190 centimeters) Height less than 91 centimeters (36 inches) Smooth-running engine from 4 to 80 kilometers (3 to 50 miles) per hour Rectangular-shaped body Four-wheel drive with two-speed transfer case Fold-down windshield Three bucket seats Blackout and driving lights Gross vehicle weight below 1,300 lbs (590 kg). At first, Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company were the only two companies answering the call. Soon, however, Ford Motor Company entered the picture, and competition began among the three over which company would receive the lucrative government contract. Each company produced prototypes for testing in record time. Bantam's chief engineer, along with a team of Bantam executives, worked out a design, and the company built its field car within 49 days. Willys-Overland Vice President of Engineering Delmar G. Roos designed the Willys Quad. Ford developed its Model GP (General Purpose), known as the Pygmy, which was powered by an adapted Ford/Ferguson tractor. Each company delivered its prototype to the Army in the summer of 1940 and received approval to build 70 sample vehicles. The Army took possession of these vehicles in November 1940 at Camp Holabird, Maryland.

Introduction Individuals have been successfully installing popular Chev- rolet and GM engines to Jeep vehicles since the 1960’s. The Jeep FSJ Wagoneers, Trucks and Cherokees have a fabulous history and are at the top of the pack for “cool” Jeeps for a conversion powertrain. Despite whatever your experience with this type of work may be, we strongly advise you to read these instructions well. Contained in these instructions are the requirements, The Novak Guide to tips, hints and tricks of years of performing these con- versions, both in our own facility and information we’ve gained from discussing these swaps with our customers. Put this information to good use. Failure to implement the practices and information in these pages may jeopardize the quality of your work, as well as any product warranties. About Your Engine Mounts Novak’s bolt-in / weld-in engine mounts for the SJ Jeeps provide immense strength and a rapid and precise GM V8 engine installation. We have sought to achieve the greatest ease of installation achievable with these phenomenal GM engines without compromising engineering. Strength The Novak mounts feature a thick 3/16 steel construction and a welded box design for the maximum strength avail- able. They employ the best engineering and geometry to assure that they’ll survive even the wildest of engines. Placement We have predetermined engine placement for the installer. Despite the larger engine bays and wide frames, there is actually a very narrow window in which these GM engines can properly fit into SJ Jeeps, and we’ve done this design legwork already.
