These scams, often originating in lawless countries far away, are intended to gain access to your personal identification. Please know that neither I nor any member of the parish staff nor anyone representing the Diocese of Greensburg will ever contact you by email making any request of this kind. If you receive such an email or a phone call, please call the parish office or speak directly to me or a member of the parish staff before you ever give out any personal information. If it is an email scam, the authorities can be contacted and we can let our Diocesan Office of Information Technologies work on it as well. We are going to be instituting some minor liturgical adjustments at weekend Masses that will affect procedures for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers). In order to institute these changes as smoothly as possible, I am asking all Eucharistic Ministers to meet with me in the church next Monday, October 14 at 6:30PM. This meeting should last no longer than 45 minutes. We are looking to start up a Liturgical Environment Team here at St. Regis. This team of interested parishioners would look after plants and flowers throughout our church, would keep track of decorations and other appointments for our liturgical space, and would work together to enhance the environment for our worship, not just at Christmas and Easter, but all year long. An infor- mational/organizational meeting will be held this Wednesday at 6:30PM in the conference room of the parish office. Men and women of all ages are welcome to get involved. Green Thumbs are certainly welcome but definitely not required; the only require- ment is interest in and enthusiasm for the ministry. For more information please contact me. The first weekend in October means it’s time for us to begin the annual October Count. Each year, during the month of October, all the parishes in the diocese do a literal “head count” of how many people are attending Mass. These counts are im- portant in statistical reporting, especially in helping the diocese and parishes determine long-term trends in Mass attendance, which aid greatly in planning for the future. The month of October is chosen because there are no major Church feasts or holydays during the month, vacation season is over, school is in session, and the weather is generally still good...all factors which lead to “normal” Mass attendance. On Friday the Church honors St. John XXIII. Angelo Roncalli was born—one of 13 children of sharecropper par- ents—in the village of Sotto il Monte in Northern Italy in 1881. He was ordained in 1904 and, like most young Italian men of the time, was drafted into the army during World War I, where young Father Angelo served as a stretcher-bearer and chaplain. After the war, Pope Benedict XV appointed him to head the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in Italy. In the 1930s, entering the Vatican diplomatic corps, as Nazi and fascist persecutions began, Roncalli was posted in Bulgaria and Turkey where he helped thousands of Jewish refugees in Europe. In 1953 he was named of Venice. The Papal Conclave of October 1958 thought they were electing “caretaker pope” when they selected Cardinal Roncalli—at age 76—to succeed Pope Pius XII but Good Pope John, as he would be frequently called, surprised the world by calling for the just two months after his election. Vatican II is, undoubtedly, the most influential event in the life of the Church in the 20th century; a half century later we are still trying to un- derstand the true theological import of the council. But Pope John’s influence extended beyond the “New Pentecost” of the council. He took major steps to advance the Church’s relationship with Judaism (John Paul II would build on these steps a few decades later) and worked tirelessly for peace in the world; he offered to personally mediate between President Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev to peacefully end the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and authored the papal encyclical, Pacem in Terris, in the last months of his life. He died on June 3, 1963, and was canonized, along with Pope John Paul II, by Pope Francis in 2014. His feast day of October 11 is the anniversary of the convening of the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

During October, the Evangelizaon Commiee would like to connue the theme of loving…Everybody, Always. We will look at the lives of Saints. The lives of saints provide us with examples and stories about loving the difficult people in our lives, even when the difficult people are actually us! October 4th was the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Here is a story about how he learned to love Every- body…Always: Like most of his contemporaries, St. Francis felt a disdain for lepers and avoided them at all costs. One day, before his conversion, Francis was riding his horse alone in the countryside. He caught sight of a leper and his first insnct was to turn back or move to avoid him. Instead, Francis dismounted his horse, embraced the leper and kissed him. In his Testament, Francis writes, “When I was in sin, the sight of lepers nauseated me beyond measure; but then God himself led me into their company, and I had pity on them. When I had once become acquaint- ed with them, what had previously nauseated me became a source of physical consolaon for me. A er that I did not wait long before leaving the world.” Francis eventually came to realize that he had actually embraced none other than his Lord, Jesus Christ. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE R Save the DATE: Friday, November 1st from 3R5 PM. Every year about 3,000 completely innocent lives are destroyed at the Planned Parenthood which stands at 933 Liberty Ave. in downtown Pisburgh.
