BOEING CO. has agreed on terms to sell 300 planes to China and plans to open a facility there to finish work on its 737-model jetliner. ‘China is a critical international market for commercial airplanes,’ said Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Ray Conner.

According to Airbus’ market forecast, China is poised to become the world’s leading country for passenger air traffic, and it already is a major geographical region for Airbus. China also is home to a growing number of Airbus manufacturing and support operations – including its first assembly line outside of Europe. ‘Asia-Pacific will lead in world traffic by 2034 and China will be the world’s biggest aviation market within 10 years, and clearly Asia and emerging markets are the catalyst for strong air traffic growth,’ Said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

The number of air passengers traveling to, from and within China is set to nearly triple by 2034 to some 1.3 billion. Boeing estimates that China’s commercial airplane fleet will nearly triple over the next 20 years, from 2,570 aircraft in 2014 to 7,210 aircraft in 2034. While China is training more local crews, pilots still need roughly a decade of experience before they can be promoted to captain. The air-travel boom has outpaced that maturation. Today, nearly all Chinese airlines employ foreign crews. Americans represent the largest proportion.
