DOC's 2008 Run for the Roses DOC’s 2008 Run for the Roses 134th Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 3, 2008 *Expert Derby Selections* Doc's Sports will provide you with our 1st, 2nd, & 3rd choices to win the 2008 Derby Field Kentucky Derby. You may play them either as win, place, or show bets or together in what will certainly be a high paying exotic bet. In addition Doc's will provide you Adriano with a $100 recommended bet, the exact same bet Doc himself will be making in Louisville, Kentucky, watching the race in person. This same bet would have Anak Nakal grossed you $720 in the 2005 Belmont Stakes Race. In 2007 we hit the trifecta in the Preakness and superfectain in the Belmont. Big Brown With 20 horses in the field, it is almost a certainty that exotic bets will Big Truck approach five figure payouts. We will focus most of our bankroll on win/place/show bets, as this gives us the best chance to collect. The remaining balance will be a $1 Bob Black Jack five horse box and a $1 trifecta wheel in which we key in on one horse to win the race and have five horses that can come in either second or third in any order. If Colonel John you do not understand this bet, just tell the teller you would like a $1 trifecta wheel keying our horse to win over the other five horses for second and third. If the teller Cool Coal Man still does not understand, just show them your sheet and make sure all five bets add up to $100. Court Vision Many of the legendary jockeys have retired leaving this year's field full of tal- ent, but lacking big race experience. Trainers will again take the spotlight during the Cowboy Cal week, as multiple horses will be saddled by Todd Pletcher and Nick Zito. By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must

BELMONT STAKES 88 2017 Media Guide NYRA.com 2017 Media Guide NYRA.com FIRST RUNNING The first running of the Belmont Stakes in 1867 at Jerome Park took place on a Thursday. The race was 1 5/8 miles long and the conditions included “$200 each; half forfeit, and $1,500-added. The second to receive $300, and an English racing saddle, made by Merry, of St. James Street, London, to be presented by Mr. Duncan.” OLDEST TRIPLE CROWN EVENT The Belmont Stakes, first run in 1867, is the oldest of the Triple Crown events. It predates the Preakness Stakes (first run in 1873) by six years and the Kentucky Derby (first run in 1875) by eight. Aristides, the winner of the first Kentucky Derby, ran second in the 1875 Belmont behind winner Calvin. FOURTH OLDEST IN NORTH AMERICA The Belmont Stakes, first run in 1867, is one of the oldest stakes races in North America. The Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland was first run in 1831, the Queens Plate in Canada had its inaugural in 1860, and the Travers started at Saratoga in 1864. However, the Belmont, which will be run for the 148th time in 2016, is third to the Phoenix (164th running in 2016) and Queens Plate (157th running in 2016) in total runnings. The Travers has had gaps in its history and its 147th running will be on August 27, 2016. MOVED TO MORRIS PARK In 1890, the Belmont, named for August Belmont I, was moved from Jerome Park to Morris Park, a 1 3/8-mile track once located a few miles east of what is now Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx.

  • RICE's DERBY CHOICE JOURNAL 2008 29Th Edition
RICE’S DERBY CHOICE JOURNAL 2008 29th Edition History does not record whether Aristotle was a handicapper or whether he ever even attended the chariot races. But among his contributions was the word kairos found in his treatise on rhetoric. The most broadly accepted English translation is perfect timing. No other term better summarizes the one element without which no horse can hope to wear the garland of roses in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. The list of superior runners that were denied the Derby trophy is seemingly endless. His training peaked too early or too late, he was boxed in tight quarters, a hole closed in a blink just as the winning move was underway, etc. Last year our selections had kairos in spades as Street Sense and Hard Spun ran 1-2. Let’s hope our Aristotelian streak stays alive for 2008. In this year’s multiple Oscar winner, “No Country for Old Men” (the title borrowed by the Coen Brothers from the opening line of Yeats’ “Sailing to Byzantium”), Tommy Lee Jones is in character as grizzled lawman Ed Tom Bell who is not afraid of dying but does not want “to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don’t understand.” Welcome to the Kentucky Derby, Ed Tom, where we do exactly that every year. We will try to our best to avoid the opprobrium leveled by the Grateful Dead in their classic Casey Jones: “Got two good eyes but still you don’t see.” We will abide by the Buddha’s last words to his monks: “Strive on diligently!” The challenge of this year’s renewal can best be summed up in one word: polytrack.
