Gorry, Dublin, until Anonymous sale, Christie’s, London, 6 October, 1950, lot 123 Anonymous sale, Christie’s, London, 9 July 2014, lot 159 (The Property of a Lady) Private collection, England, until 2021 Born in Antwerp in 1603, Simon de Vos studied with the portraitist Cornelis de Vos (1603- 1676) before enrolling as a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1620. Subsequently, he is thought to have rounded off his education with a trip to Italy. Although undocumented, a sojourn in Italy during the 1620s is the only plausible explanation for the stylistic similarities that exist between some of his early genre scenes and those of the German-born artist Johann Liss (c. 1595-1631), who was in Rome and Venice at that time. In any event, de Vos was back in his hometown by 1627, the year in which he married Catharina, sister of the still-life painter Adriaen van Utrecht (1599-1652). He remained in Antwerp for the rest of his life. In his early career, Simon de Vos painted mostly cabinet-sized genre scenes. He specialised in merry company subjects, whose style and composition recall similar works by such Dutch contemporaries as Antonie Palamedesz. (1601-1673), Dirck Hals (1591-1656) and Pieter Codde (1599-1678). After about 1640, he turned increasingly to biblical subjects that show the influence of Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642), Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). -

arts Article Intermediaries and the Market: Hans Rottenhammer’s Use of Networks in the Copper Painting Market Sophia Quach McCabe Department of History of Art and Architecture, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 February 2019; Accepted: 16 June 2019; Published: 24 June 2019 Abstract: In Willem van Haecht’s Gallery of Cornelis van der Geest, The Last Judgment by the German artist Hans Rottenhammer stands prominently in the foreground. Signed and dated 1598, it is one of many copper panel paintings Rottenhammer produced and sent north of the Alps during his decade-long sojourn in Venice. That the work was valued alongside those of Renaissance masters raises questions about Rottenhammer’s artistic status and how the painting reached Antwerp. This essay examines Rottenhammer’s international market as a function of his relationships with artist-friends and agents, especially those in Venice’s German merchant community. By employing digital visualization tools alongside the study of archival documents, the essay attends to the intermediary connections within a social network, and their effects on the art market. It argues for Rottenhammer’s use of—and negotiation with—intermediaries to establish an international career. Through digital platforms, such as ArcGIS and Palladio, the artist’s patronage group is shown to have shifted geographically, from multiple countries around 1600 to Germany and Antwerp after 1606, when he relocated to Augsburg. Yet, the same trusted friends and associates he had established in Italy continued to participate in Rottenhammer’s business of art. Bonny van Sighem Vis op het droge Visstillevens in Holland en Utrecht in de 17de eeuw Stillevens met daarop stapels dode vissen behoren zelden tot de topstukken van musea. Wij kijken liever naar een schilderij met flink wat menselijk drama of naar een kleurig boeket bloemen in verf dan naar een uitstalling van deze weinig aaibare dieren. Toch zijn er prachtige visstillevens geschilderd in de 17de eeuw. De meesten werden gemaakt in de provincie Holland en de stad Utrecht. Over het algemeen zien we op schilderijen uit Holland wat vaker zeevis en op die uit Utrecht wat vaker zoetwatervis. Realisti - sche uitstallingen tonen vistillevens echter niet. De bederfelijkheid van het onderwerp verklaart waarom ze nooit de nageschilderde werkelijkheid laten zien. De stank in het atelier zou ondraaglijk zijn geweest. Bijbelse taferelen, portretten, mythologische voorstellingen, kerkinterieurs, stadsgezichten, genrestukken, landschappen, zeegezichten, stillevens. De 17de-eeuwse Nederlandse schil - derkunst kende zeer veel specialiteiten. De markt was vrij en de economische situatie was gunstig, waardoor zowel de vraag naar als het aanbod van schilderijen zeer groot was. Stil - levenschilders die zich oefenden in het weergeven van levenloze voorwerpen konden kiezen voor het schilderen van vazen met bloemen, boeken, tabaksgerei, steengoed, etenswaar, vruchten, glas en andere kostbaarheden, jachtbuit, vis, of een combinatie hiervan, zoals het ontbijtje, het vanitas-stilleven en het pronkstilleven. Stillevens stelden in de ogen van de la - tere kunsttheoretici niet veel voor, maar op de markt vonden ze gretig aftrek en er konden hoge prijzen voor betaald worden. Ook aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw worden stillevens nog bijzonder gewaardeerd. Ze staan sterk in de markt en brengen ongekende prijzen op. -

Frans Snyders (Antwerp 1579 - Antwerp 1657) A Buck, a Lobster on a China Plate, a Squirrel in a Basket of Fruit, Artichokes and a Boar’s Head in a Tureen, with Birds, a White Napkin and Asparagus on a Draped Table bearing a collection inventory number (lower right) oil on canvas 117 x 179 cm (46 x 70½ in) On a table draped with a scarlet cloth, the imposing figure of a dead buck deer occupies the centre of the composition. Around the magnificent animal, which has been gutted ready for quartering and hanging, manifestations of plenty take the form of overflowing baskets of fruit and vegetables, an enormous boar’s head, a red lobster, and a string of small birds. The dark, neutral wall behind the table serves as a sober backdrop to emphasize still more the exuberant feast of colour and form inherent to this still-life. A tall basket to the left of the composition overflows with grapes, peaches and apricots, their leaves and tendrils creating a swirling pattern around it: a red squirrel balances atop the fruit, stretching towards the most inaccessible apricot with delightful illogicality. To the right, another receptacle holds, among oranges and artichokes, the gigantic severed head of a wild boar, probably hunted at the same time as the buck. On the table next to the deer’s head are bunches of asparagus, and further left a dead partridge, a woodcock, and a string of small birds such as bullfinches. A black cat, bearing a peculiarly malevolent expression in its orange eyes, prepares to pounce over the stag’s neck to scavenge one of the birds. -

When Rubens returned from Italy in 1608, at the age of 31, he came back with a case full of sketches and a head full of ideas. He purchased a plot of land with a house near his grandfather’s home (Meir 54) and converted it into his own Palazzetto. Take an hour to visit the Rubens House and to breathe in the atmosphere in the master’s house before setting off to explore his city. Rubens’s palazzetto on the Wapper was not yet complete when the artist was commissioned to work on the Baroque Jesuit church some distance away, at Hendrik Conscienceplein. On your way to Hendrik Conscienceplein, we would suggest you make a brief stop at another church: St James’s Church (St Jacobskerk) in Lange Nieuwstraat. This robust building dooms up rather unexpectedly among the houses, but its interior presents a perfect harmony between Gothic and Baroque: the elegant Middle Ages and the flamboyant style of the 17th century go hand-in-hand here. -
The Collecting, Dealing and Patronage Practices of Gaspare Roomer
ART AND BUSINESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NAPLES: THE COLLECTING, DEALING AND PATRONAGE PRACTICES OF GASPARE ROOMER by Chantelle Lepine-Cercone A thesis submitted to the Department of Art History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright ©Chantelle Lepine-Cercone, 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the cultural influence of the seventeenth-century Flemish merchant Gaspare Roomer, who lived in Naples from 1616 until 1674. Specifically, it explores his art dealing, collecting and patronage activities, which exerted a notable influence on Neapolitan society. Using bank documents, letters, artist biographies and guidebooks, Roomer’s practices as an art dealer are studied and his importance as a major figure in the artistic exchange between Northern and Sourthern Europe is elucidated. His collection is primarily reconstructed using inventories, wills and artist biographies. Through this examination, Roomer emerges as one of Naples’ most prominent collectors of landscapes, still lifes and battle scenes, in addition to being a sophisticated collector of history paintings. The merchant’s relationship to the Spanish viceregal government of Naples is also discussed, as are his contributions to charity. Giving paintings to notable individuals and large donations to religious institutions were another way in which Roomer exacted influence. This study of Roomer’s cultural importance is comprehensive, exploring both Northern and Southern European sources. Networking in high society The Duarte family in seventeenth-century Antwerp1 Timothy De Paepe Vleeshuis Museum | Klank van de stad & University of Antwerp At the end of the sixteenth century the Duarte family, who were of Jewish origin, moved from Portugal to Antwerp and it was here that Diego (I) Duarte laid the foundations for a particularly lucrative business in gemstones and jewellery. His son Gaspar (I) and grandson Gaspar (II) were also very successful professionally and became purveyors of fine jewellery to the courts in (among other places) England, France, the Dutch Republic and the Habsburg Empire. Their wealth enabled the Duartes to collect art and make music in their “palace” on the Meir. Their artistic taste and discernment was such that the mansion became a magnet for visitors from all over Western Europe. The arts were a catalyst for the Duartes’ business, but also constituted a universal language that permitted the family to transcend religious and geographical borders. The death of Diego (II) Duarte in 1691 brought to an end the story of the Duartes in Antwerp. The Duartes were possibly the foremost dealers in jewellery and gemstones in Antwerp in the seventeenth century, but they did not achieve that position without a great deal of effort. Thanks to hard work, determination, a love of the arts and a widespread family network, plus the advantage of Antwerp’s geographically central position, these enterprising cosmopolitans managed to overcome religious discrimination and a succession of setbacks. And in the intimacy of their home they brought together the world of business, the arts and diplomacy in an environment that welcomed every discerning visitor, irrespective of his or her religious background. -
