GPS Rugby Brief History

GPS Rugby is the successor in name to GPS Old Boys Rugby Club and to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and also one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in . The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The Club was formalised at a meeting held on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 when, under a new name, the BGS Old Boys’ Football Club again took its place in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played in green and blue colours for the first time in the 1931 season. Later the constitution was again changed and membership of the club made unrestricted.

Fifty of the Club’s members have played for Australia and over 200 have played for Queensland. Seven have captained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland.

Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club was formed from the Ashgrove Emus Club in 1984 when it affiliated with GPS Old Boys after that club moved from Finsbury Park to Ashgrove Sports Ground. It quickly grew to be the largest Junior Club in Brisbane winning the QJRU President’s trophy for the most successful club on a number of occasions.

In 2014 GPS Old Boys Rugby Club amalgamated with Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club to form GPS Rugby Club making it the largest club in Australia with almost 1500 players.

7 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2017

President’s Report

On behalf of the GPS community it is my privilege to present my Presidents report for the 2017 season. This is the 130th year since we were formed. We have enjoyed the year in style, both on and off the field.

Rugby

The club fielded eighty-two junior teams in 2017. In the age groups that contest finals we had four teams making the grand final and two teams winning. Congratulations to all the teams and especially the under 13 Maroon and under 17 Gold on your victories. Full details are set out in our Junior report.

Of our ten senior teams, two went through to grand final victory and seven of them competed in the finals. Five of the senior teams competing finished either first or second in their competition, stamping them as a group with the best record for consistency in the Brisbane competition. Huge congratulations to the Colts 2 and Premier Reserve teams for their grand final wins. Commiserations to Premier Grade who played magnificently in the major semi-final to lose out on the grand final going down to University. We salute the coaches from all grades for their considerable efforts in taking the teams to the finals, a wonderful turnaround from a few years previous. Special thanks to our Premier Grade coach, Anthony Mathison who was awarded the Coach of the Year at our annual presentation evening.

Thanks also to Daniel Nethery in his role as Director of Rugby. The club is starting to reap the rewards of this appointment. Daniel is working hard on attracting new talent and programs to the club, including girls and women’s programs. We need to continue to develop our traditional 15 a side rugby while working on alternate formats of 7 and 10 a side rugby to ensure we are catering to the needs of all who want to play this game. Our rugby academy is up and running successfully with a full group training. We are looking to expand the academy intake in 2018 to ensure we are capturing all the younger players to assist in their transition into the Colts program. Together with former coaches we are developing coaching protocols to be used right through our club. This work is being co-ordinated by Andy Tucker from our management committee and we hope to see significant improvement in coaching technique and development in 2018.

Together with the other Premier clubs in Brisbane we are in dialogue with the QRU to assist in the development of the game at a junior level. With the constraints the QRU have we see our club as taking an important role in attracting new young players to the game through development days and regular skills training programs.

Congratulations to all our award winners at all levels of the club. We actively encourage the players to continue to develop their fitness and skills in order to enhance the enjoyment of playing rugby. In 2017 we initiated an Honour Cap for all who played 100 A Grade games or more, and a special “300 game” cap for those who made. Congratulations to Angus Porteous for making the “300 game” club this year, he is a true stalwart of the club.

To all the managers, water runners, our statistician Chris Eaves, our set up and “pull down” crews, our ball boys, photographers, medical staff, canteen staff and other officials, a big thank you, our club would flounder without your support. A thankyou also to our old boys for your support of the club, it was a pleasure getting to know more of you in 2017 as we celebrated our great milestone.

We bid farewell to a number of our 2017 premier grade players. Some are taking their talents across the seas. We say thank you to all who played for us in season 2017.

Sponsors and Supporters

A huge thank you to our Sponsors in 2017. We would not exist without you and our club is the better for your involvement. In particular, our great thanks to those who have provided support and assistance beyond their pledged contributions. We urge all members to support these fine sponsors when making your purchases in the community.

To our members, you are the best in all of Brisbane rugby. Many an away game venue was considerably enhanced by our travelling band of members. Long may it continue, it is a credit to the dedication you show to the teams that we did so well in 2017, the players know it and they are grateful for your support. For many, including me, the club is where they find their winter friends, eagerly anticipated as soon as Easter arrives!

Community

Our club has for many years donated to charitable organisations through our Charity Day. This year we assisted Ronald McDonald House in the wonderful work they do helping families of hospitalised children. Charity is an important part of what our club is about, and in many ways, sets us apart from other clubs. We will continue to acknowledge and support that role where we can.

8 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2017

We also reached out to our friends in the Burdekin region of North Queensland and donated a framed jersey to them in recognition of the close association between the clubs when they formed 40 years ago. In 2018 we will continue to assist charities and other clubs to the best of our ability.

Finances

As you can see from the Treasurer’s report we are in a very sound financial position. We continue to run the club in a fiscally responsible manner and believe that for a club of our size it is most important to return a profit from our endeavours which can be utilised in club facilities and improvements. Unfortunately, a break in at the club and inclement weather early in the season along with a necessary increase in ground maintenance costs had a sizeable impact on our profit in 2017.

Facilities

2017 saw the completion of the renovation of field three, the Robin “Buff” Thomson Oval. This $170,000 project will safeguard and enhance much of the on-field activity needed to drive our playing membership into the future. We also completed a new storage facility to replace the shipping containers facing Buff Thomson Oval. This improves our relationship with the local council who worked with us to facilitate this upgrade and also provides an area for members to socialise.

The generous support of both the local and federal government work has commenced on the major lighting project. Once completed the new lights will allow longer and better use of our facilities. We have allocated $300,000 to this project which continues the vital infrastructure upgrade we need to deliver a quality sporting facility. The state government generously provided a grant for upgrading our office communication facilities.

With a grant from the council we also commissioned a report into the redevelopment of the entire sporting facility. The initial draft of the report has been shared with council and ongoing dialogue continues with the other sporting clubs at Yoku Road. Members have already provided input into the preliminary planning and your opinions will again be sought as the process moves forward. All agree our facilities are aging and if affordable an upgrade is desirable.

Social Functions

The club conducted several social events throughout the year, all well patronised and enjoyed by those participating. We had a most successful Ladies Day attracting over 500 ladies who enjoyed a wonderful day under a marquee at the entrance to the club grounds. On Old Boys day we hosted a luncheon for former players, many who accompanied the players onto the field to play out a great victory. The opportunity was taken to get a whole of club photo and a video was made of the day which sits on our website for viewing at any time. Soon after we had our annual test match luncheon at City Hall. We also had a wonderful award presentation evening and ball at the Mecure Hotel in the City. It was a great night of celebration for all the players and volunteers and with over 335 in attendance was a great success. The now annual ”Old Old” Boys lunch was held again where several honour caps were presented.

In closing I wish to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to my fellow management committee members, including Ainsley Gold and Ryan Webster, all our office staff, CEO Anthony Herbert, Office manager Lauren Urquhart, Operations Manager Martin Southwood, Accounts Manager Annabella Bines, and chief volunteer Rob Melloy. Your enthusiasm, cheerful nature and love of the club is well known and much admired.

The club is in a very sound state and will continue to grow and improve in season 2018.

9 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2017

Rugby Report

In 2017 GPS Rugby club had a season that was a great success. GPS manger to play in 5 Senior grand finals, winning 2 competitions. The victorious teams were Premier Reserve Grand and Colts 2 . The senior season started off well with having a good preseason. Preseason saw the Introduction of 2 new premier coaches. Head coach Anthony Mathison returned to Yoku road after a few years. He was assisted by former assistant coach Elwee Prinsloo. After Christmas, all grades returned to training in great numbers, and this effort by many of the players in preseason contributed to the success of the senior teams. We had over 280 senior players take the filed in season 2017. GPS had a total of 11 senior teams. 7 open men’s team, 3 colt teams and 1 women’s team.

When summarising the season, it is fair to say we have made significant improved in overall performances. We had 7 Grades make finals appearances of which 5 of these went on to play in Grand Finals. Semi-finalist were Premier Grade, Premier Reserve, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade and Colts 2. Grand finalist was Premier Grade, Premier Reserve, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, and Colts 2. Premierships were eventually awarded to Premier Reserve and Colts 2. The support staff with all these teams should be very proud of their team’s performances as the club has made a massive step in the right direction from the season before, and season 2018 will be used a building block for continual success at Yoku road.

2017 progress in the development and recruitment of many players. The following players all made their Premier Rugby debut for GPS rugby club in season 2017

Daniel Byrne; Connor Cowhig; AJ Alatimu; Eric Vasukicakau; Laione Mulikihaamea; Enzo Mutoti; Oliver Bartlett; Reece Cleeton; Jonathan Kent; Maaloga Konelio; Callum Nally; Nicholas Richards; Brock Staller; Mitchell Treleaven; Noa Tuqiri.

One of the great things I got to see from being on the Admin/Coaching side of GPS rugby club was the enormous effort our volunteers go to just to make sure our players are looked after; the club can't thank all volunteers enough for all your time and effort you put into this club.

Sevens and post season activities

Season 2017 saw GPS rugby club further expand their 7s Rugby program. The 7s squad took part in the Brisbane and Noosa 7s competition. We have teams in this program in boys from U14s through to opens

GPS Rugby Academy and Development Programs

In season 2017 GPS launched into a new academy program supported by FB Wealth management. The general concept of the academy is to develop younger players in the club from the age of 16 through to their 2nd season of grade rugby. The focus of the academy is to develop them both on and off the field. We had a squad of 30 players involved in the academy and this is growing every day. We will cap the program at a total of 80 player with new edition to the program every year. The S&C component was looked after by Grant Jenkins from Propel Fit.

GPS rugby club has over a 1100 junior and unfortunately many of these juniors end up playing their senior rugby with other clubs. The Academy in another step the club is putting in place to help retain and develop much of the junior talent at the club. We hope the academy becomes a significant part of the rugby clubs player development and will contribute to the success of the club. We had some great examples of the Academy program providing a player development. A notable mention must go to Harry Bartkowski. Harry came to GPS colts after a couple season away from playing rugby. Harry joined the Academy and by the end of season 2017 had progressed through the colts ranks to play in the Reserve Grade grand final. Harry is just one example how the academy is providing players with the development they need to become Premier Players of the future.

U16s/U17s Development.

As part of a wider development program GPS u16s and U17s were part of an extended academy program. This concept was to provide the players with some good coaching and enjoyable environment to play their club Rugby. Many of their sessions were also done with our colts teams to gradually introduce these teams into senior rugby at GPS.

As a result of the program we had both the U16s and U17s Div 1 teams make the grand final. With U17s taking out the title and U16s finishing runners up. We also were the only club to have 3 under 16s teams in this year’s competitions. 1 in season 1 and 2 teams in season 2.

Special thanks must go to the following coaches for working with this group. Liam Ferguson, Kuyen Lewis, Liam Adams, Nick Jenkins and Karren Ward for being age group coordinator.

Looking forward to 2018

With some great coaches retuning and with recruitment taking place for the 2018 season, we are all looking ahead to season 2018. With the combination of the new players coming to the club and the quality incumbent players, GPS rugby club is on track for a bigger and better season than 2018.

It was a great effort from all involved to have 7 teams in finals this season and 5 teams make grand finals with 2 premierships. This is just the first phase of an ongoing plan to see GPS dominate club rugby in all age groups.

The club has high expectations and is looking to be serious contenders in all grades and age groups in season 2018. As a result of the club now has its sights set on winning the Doughty shield and becoming club champions in season 2018.

The excitement levels are high and after a great season 2017 everyone is looking forward to the season to begin.

Juniors Report

2017 was another successful season for the GPS Juniors. With 1100 players, 76 teams supported by a volunteer army of over 300 coaches, managers and referees pulling together to provide an efficient and enjoyable rugby program for all.

The Modified Rugby Program designed for kids with learning disabilities has expanded and grown to two teams here at GPS and included a combined 7’s team with Brothers Rugby Club. Many thanks to Sarah Meka for pulling it together and Henry Devine and Beau Harvey for doing a great job coaching them. Each player has a trained mentor to whom we say – “fantastic job”

GPS Juniors once again performed well with great representation at the QRU finals series. Of the teams eligible to compete for Premierships (u12-17) the results were as follows:

Premiers u13 Maroon u17 Blue

Runners Up u14 Blue u16 Blue

GPS Rugby has always figured strongly in the Representative rugby pathways and 2017 was no exception. The club had players involved in the U12 Development Pathway, the U13, 14 and 16 BJRU Teams with players selected for Representative City Teams that played against Country.

Our thanks go to the BJRU staff and committee, all BJRU Affiliated Clubs, their Presidents & Committees, members and players., Thanks to the QRU and the ARU for yet another great year in Brisbane junior rugby..Appreciation to the BJRU Clubs for hosting us each weekend – we appreciate the effort that this takes.

As can be seen from above it remains a huge task and a reflection on the quality players, coaches, managers and support staff that give up their time each week for the betterment of Rugby and in particular GPS Rugby and the life development of the junior players.

2017 season has ended and the GPS Juniors now look forward to a bigger, better 2018.

Premier Grade

Coaches:Anthony Mathison, Elwee Prinsloo, Terry Donovan (M), Justin Barlow (M), Chris Eaves (Analyist), Kieran Maguire (S&C), Rory Maguire (S&C)

After a couple of less than successful seasons for Premier Grade, a new coaching regime was ushered in for 2017. Former Galloper, Red and Wallaby Anthony Mathison was joined by the 2016 Spirit NRC coach, ElweePrinsloo and together they set about returning GPS to its standing among the pre-eminent clubs in Queensland Premier Rugby.

An undefeated home season which included great victories against Sunnybank on Ladies Day, Brothers on Old Boys Day and University (their first loss for the season) on Welsby Cup / Hally Appleby Cup Day set the marker for a second placed finish and a double chance in the semi-finals. Securing the Welsby Cup, Halley Appleby Cup (v. UQ), Taylor/Hammond Trophy (v. Wests), Torkington/Daley Cup (v. Souths) and Cromwell Cup (v. Easts) made for a great year even before the finals commenced.

The pre-season training and trials, and the acquisition of a number of quality players from Perth to meld with our high performing club stalwarts, pointed to a successful year. The team knew it was capable of big results but it was another thing to take the training form and confidence on to the field. Players old and new bought into the style of play and culture being driven by the coaches and soon everyone was on the same page and firing.

The scrum became a weapon feared by all other clubs and was the bedrock on which many victories were based. That is not to undersell the backline which scored some scintillating tries over the course of the season. Both coaches have every right to be pleased with how the two units came together and delivered as a team so often.

Flyhalf, A J Alatimu, became a points scoring wizard and amassed well in excess of 100points during the regular season with remarkably accurate goal kicking. The tries were spread between backs and forwards which was proof of the team ethos. One of the most pleasing aspects was the value added by the bench players who came on during games throughout the year. Everybody understood his role and performed it well.

The team was looking forward to a successful run at a premiership and the major semi-final against University resulted in a convincing win propelling them directly into the Grand Final to await the winner of the University v Sunnybank preliminary final. Energy was high.

It was to be University in the Grand Final and a big crowd of supporters saw the Gallopers just fall short losing 23 – 14. With a structured game plan, and plenty of effort and guts on show, it was the execution of skills that was the team’s Achilles heel on the big day. Congratulations to University who have been the pace setters in Premier Rugby for a number of years and deserved their victory.

Thank you to the club as a whole for supporting the team so well during the year and especially to Anthony Herbert, Dan Nethery and the Board who left no stone unturned in the quest for a premiership. Congratulations to the coaches who ensured that the team was highly skilled, highly motivated and enjoying their rugby. The team prospered and achieved much because of their technical and management skills.

Chris Eaves worked endless hours providing statistics and data on both GPS and opposition teams for the coaches. Both his input and enthusiasm have been invaluable assets during the season. Special mention to the medical and physio staff who toiled tirelessly during the season to keep the players fit and available and to rehab any injuries. They are the best in their business.

Giant steps have been taken this year to position GPS as a leading light in Premier Grade and, with the return of most of the players for 2018, there is a firm belief among the squad that they can take the next big step.

Premier Reserve Grade

Coaches:Mark Donaldson, Corey Trudgen, Byron Roberts, Brendan Trudgen (M).

Season 2017 was a very successful one for the Premier Reserve grade side and this was capped off with a huge win in the grand final over Sunnybank.

To get there, many goals and aims were set out at the beginning of the season and this culminated in the side blending together to achieve those goals. The goals that were agreed on were:  Both Premier and Reserve Grade sides to make the final;  Both teams to win the final.

These goals helped to establish a winning culture in the top 2 grades and it was evident in the performance from players throughout the season.

Reserve Grade had a solid season. Finishing 2nd in the regular season is no easy feat. It was very pleasing to see the side enjoying their rugby and this in turn gave success to this side.

We started with a solid preseason and there was plenty of old and new players that showed up this year. It was great to see the commitment and enthusiasm from all players and this was a feature of this side.

There was a plethora of huge performances this year from many players. Many of these coming from club stalwarts in Jono Ellis and Cameron King but also young guns such as Daniel Chui-Clark and Nicholas Richards who had fantastic years. For his performances on the field, Nicholas Richards took out the Player’s Player award voted by his team mates and this showed how much determination and ability he has whilst playing rugby.

Throughout the season, the enjoyment and camaraderie on and off the field was what made this side a great one. The unity and ethos that the team built on stemmed down from the Premier grade side and this helped to establish a winning culture amongst the group.

There were many lessons learnt on and off the field this season and it has cemented the stepping stones for next season. It was a long and prosperous season which culminated in Reserve grade taking out the premiership. Hopefully many players take this winning attitude into next season to make 2018 a great one for GPS.

Finally, the coaches and support staff would like to thank the club who have been huge supporters of this side this season and your work does not go unnoticed. To the players, you made this season what it was and we achieved our goal. The coaches would like to acknowledge some players that will be leaving the club. Patrick Smith, Stephen Stagg and our captain Sam Tewson. You three were huge in this sides progression throughout the season and you will be sorely missed.

What a season, let’s bring on season 2018.

First Grade

Coaches: Nigel Hogan, Tim Sheppard, Andrew ‘Squizzy’ Taylor, Jules Jefferis(M)

GPS First Grade had a good year in 2017. Our goal was to play finals rugby and take out the premiership. We achieved the first, finishing third on the table, but unfortunately fell short on our primaryobjective.

While the season ended with a close and frustrating loss to University in the minor semi-final, the season was one to look back on and be proud of.

The clear high point of the season came at Yoku Road with a total dismantling of a top of the table Brothers outfit. Our disjointed team, affected by injuries, put in a complete performance and set up the second half of our season. There’s nothing better than beating the Filth at home.

Other highlights included winning both games against Uni during the home and away season, including holding them to nil at St Lucia and then a pulsating come from behind victory over University in the penultimate round of the competition. The boys also racked up a near record points total against Logan in Logan with a 97-0 victory.

We had a large number of players turn out for us during the year, being the conduit between the lower grades and Reserve Grade. The fact that this was hardly noticeable in the boys’ attitudes or the team’s playing style during the year is a credit to all involved and the club itself.

There are many players who will look back on 2017 for fond individual performances. Despite having a frustrating year with injury, the captain Dylan Lindsay was never far from the 321s from his peers. Giorgio Phillips brought a touch of class and power to the backline and racked up an impressive points tally. Cal Nally put in several barnstorming performances, particularly in the run in to the finals where he literally lead from the front..Sean Coughlan was another one to regularly be rewarded with man of the match awards from coaches and players alike due to his capacity to appear as though he was everywhere at once on the field.

It was also rewarding to see many boys start in First Grade, or lower, and make the way up to Reserve Grade and succeed during the year. This is yet again a testament to the strength of the players and the club itself.

In the end, the 2017 season was frustratingly short. But it will provide the motivation and foundation to take the extra steps in 2018.

Second Grade

Coaches:Tony Rogers, Fano Ahovelo, Steve Taylor (M), Kieran Reynolds (M), Andy Dallinson(S&C)

From the preseason muster, 2017 looked to be a year of promise for GPS grades as player numbers and positional depth were strong from the start. The coaching team was headed up by Tony and Fano, both new starters to coaching GPS grades and Steve returning into a manager’s role after a couple of years break. Kieran commenced his management career looking after the role while Steve was away overseas.

Bit of a slow start to the competition season with forfeits, rain and byes and it was not until the 4th round against Uni that the team finally got on to the field to get a start and all the stored energy was saved for the students with a resounding win to setting the tone for the season. The team formed around the leadership of Connor O’Shea, Jono Ellis and Matthew Muller who shared captaincy roles through the season.

After the first round, there were only two blemishes with losses to Souths and Brothers. The latter equal to highway robbery as we finished the round tied at the top of the table with Souths. The Standout of the season was the depth and strength of the forwards platform that dominated in set pieces. This gave the team the platform to launch many combinations for the backs to attack and take advantage of in possession and they had more slick moves than a set of sheep nuts dropped on a hot BBQ plate.

As the rounds progressed the team held its place in 2nd spot on the table with 10 wins and 4 losses with Souths being the team nemesis as the only side to beat us twice. The season produced some memorable moments with long range tries, a hat trick of pies to Brendan Ciocca and some of the best and toughest defence, holding back charges like a boxing day sales stampede.

Come finals and no change in ranking (yet) with us going down 3 – 5 against Souths in what would have been one of the hardest, toughest, gutsiest matches I have seen in a long time. Neither team gave an inch and the character of this team stood up on the day as they played themselves off their feet. Still in the hunt with the preliminary final we faced Brothers, at 17 – 3 up with a minute to go that highway robber appeared again with us ending up going down 24 – 17 in extra time. At times you need a slice of luck in finals, unfortunately Brothers were the recipients this time round but the effort as with the previous week was again top class finals footy. Bad luck guys as you stood up for over 90 minutes of football, played with so much passion and did us and the club proud.

Congratulations to all who were a part of 2nd grade in 2017 including all the support on the bench from 3rd grade. The spirit and mateship made it a pleasure to coach and manage you guys. Also a special congratulations to David Jordan for achieving 200 games for GPS…

Third Grade

Coaches: Zac Russell-Sharam: Brenden Hood, Michael Warman Scott Grinstead (M)

The 2017 GPS 3rd Grade rugby season was definitely one to remember. As a new coach GPS rugby the role filled me with excitement and high expectations. During the pre-season many hours were spent talking to players, coaches and supporting members at the club to really understand the culture and expectations of our group.

As a coaching group this year we decided to focus on 2key objectives to drive our team. The first was club culture, which we achieved immensely. Key strategies we implemented were Thursday night dinners after training at our local sponsors. Another was ensuring after every drill players were to “get a touch on” or “get around each other” to build a positive environment where hard work is encouraged by the players not just by the coaches. We also instigated “Circle of Love” where at the end of training players would warm down and answer a theme of the night “i.e. favourite food, favourite celebrity etc among some of the less riskay topics to really get to know each other. This combined with many other facets resulted in on average an attendance of over 40-50 players to training made up of 3rdand 4th grade players throughout the entire season.

The second key aspect we aimed to achieve was the improvement of basic skills. A significant effort was contributed to players improving their basic rugby skills such as handling, tackling, rucking and game awareness. Training sessions were kept short and sharp with drills only being conducted for 10min at a time and a heavy emphasis was placed on a competitive team vs team player vs player environment. Both 3rds and 4ths trained as a squad which kept player’s active, engaged and most importantly loving their rugby. Ego’s were not a thing as each player knew they were all accountable for their individual role and performance in the squad and truly felt they were part of the team and every effort made a difference.

On the back of these key objectives the results spoke for themselves. 3rd Grade were the only team to finish minor premiers at the club and 4th grade followed suit coming 2nd. Both teams continued to win their semi-finals and progress straight to the big dance (grand final) only to unluckily fall short of taking out the premiership. More importantly though the real achievement was our for and against being the best in the competition which emphasized our defensive efforts and the ability to capitalize on opportunities. Lastly though it was rewarding to see many of our players whom started the season with the lower grades quickly rise up the ranks as the season wore on.

After such a successful season I sincerely wish to thank the coaching staff, players and club for their hard work and providing us the opportunity to coach at such a strong club. I thoroughly look forward to the club’s future. Up the Gallopers!

Fourth Grade

Coaches: Nathan Shaw, Nathan Freeny,Tim Wilson(Coach and Manager)

Fourth grade had a tremendous season in 2017 with an influx of players from the colts patching up the lack of depth experienced last year. The team won 8 straight games leading into the finals and succeeded in defeating the minor premiers Brothers in the major semi-final. Losing a tight grand final was a disappointment for the players and team staff, but both teams put on a high quality game of entertaining rugby that was only decided after the siren. While the final result did not go our way, there is plenty to be proud of from the season. A lot of our players were experiencing their first year of senior rugby but showed the maturity of a much older team, particularly in defence, which was consistently the best in the competition. Each game was played in a good spirit and every one of the boys enjoyed their rugby. Mixed in with the younger players were a few old heads, making the coaches’ jobs a lot easier. The depth of talent in the club this year was reflected in the quality of players that were kept in 4th grade for most of the year. There are too many to name, but a great many players in the 4th grade squad have the potential to move a long way up the grades in coming seasons. Marshalling the number of players available to 4th grade to make sure that everyone got some time on the park was not easy, and I could not have done that without the assistance of Tim Wilson, Dan Nethery and Nathan Freney. While the three of us mostly concentrated on organising the 4th grade and Normanby Cup teams at training, Zac Russell-Sharam and Brenden Hood spent the vast majority of Tuesday and Thursday nights running the 4ths in the with 3rds in drills, attacking patterns and set piece. The success of the season for the team has a lot to do with the work that Zac and Brendan put into both teams.

Normanby Cup

Coaches:: Nathan Shaw, Nathan Freeny,Tim Wilson(Coach and Manager)

The good showing in player numbers this year allowed the club to run a Friday night team for the first time in a few years. While we had quite a few different players through the ranks during the season, by the end of the year the team was a tight knit group of guys who had a lot of fun throwing the ball around on a Friday night. While the level of fitness for some of the players in the Normanby Cup competition may not be what it was a few years earlier, the competition was at times tougher than some of the Saturday grades games. The games were always played in a good spirit and it was rare for the team not to stay around at the opposition ground and have a few beers after the game.

While we could have notched up a few more wins during the season, this year was a good year to build the base for what will hopefully become a permanent Friday night team with the likelihood of home games for the next season. Special thanks to Ben Neighbour for keeping the boys in line and to Declan Maguire, Michael Atkinson, Dan Nethery and Ryan Webster for rustling up numbers for the team when we were looking a bit short.

Women

Coach: Mote Kite, James Kite, Liliani Ngauamo(M) Sam Wadeley (S&C)

“A brilliant first round display against Logan at home, with a number of key additions to the roster promised so much for the 2017 season.

Unfortunately, as has been the case in previous years and due to a number of different factors that was not to be the case in what would be another frustrating season for the GPS women’s team, eventually finishing the year in 6th position.

The lowest point arguably, the heavy defeat encountered at the hands of eventual grand finalists Redlands, during the Super Saturday Showdown held at Sunnybank.

Coaches Mote Kite and Sean Minehan will no doubt be looking for the vital final ingredients that will enable their GPS charges to finally graduate into a top four team in the off season.

However, despite the tough year, there was still a lot to celebrate.

The win against Brothers sticks out as a game that displayed what potential was possible when everything came together for the team.

In terms of individual milestones for the year, the milestone celebrated by foundation player Apikali Loganimoce, who became the first female player to reach 50 caps for the club is a significant one for the team in terms of the longevity of the women’s program.

The discovery of sprinter turned rugby player Georgia Devlin was also an important find, despite her season being cut short due to a serious ACL knee injury. The brave and zippy outside back completed a number of eye catching performances that have a number of people at the club excited at the thought of what a few years in the game will take her game, moving forward.

Military warrior princess Alix Stretton was another new addition who shone brightly for the Gallopers in 2017 as the feisty flanker threw her body into every single collision with reckless abandon for her grateful team mates.

At the representative level, it was also great to see Alisha Hewitt and Caroline Vakalahi again earn selection for the Wallaroos in 2017 from the club, while the hugely talented Vuanimasei Rasolea finally claimed her maiden Queensland jersey when she was selected into the Queensland women’s 10 a side and 15’s teams this year.

The achievements would suggest some bigger and better things are not too far away on the horizon for the female Gallopers. Many thanks to all the players for their efforts for the year, to coaches Mote Kite and Sean Minehan, and team manager Likah Olive.

Premier Colts

Coaches: Patrick O’Connor, Dave Sheehan, Allan Berriman (M), Beau Brammall (S&C).

With a new coaching and management team in place a large group of players, mainly new to the program kicked of the 2017 Premier Colts season. After a lengthy preseason the trials saw some positive results with the Premier Colts squad recording a win over University.

Led by returning player Kaleb Talbot, a team of mostly first year colts started the year with high hopes. The season proper started slowly but with a younger side the outlook was positive. The boys came together well over the year and though they narrowly missed out on a top 4 spot they did pick up wins over the ladder leaders Brothers and University during the season.

A positive sign for the program was that a number of players were invited to play with the Premier Reserve Grade team towards the end of the season, which shows the strength making its way through the club. These stars of the future were not alone with a number of other players showing signs of potential that would be making all Gallopers supporters very happy. Names like Dan Niven, Matt Collins, Harrison Bartkowski, Isaac De Flavis, Liam Adams, Max Marshall Ethan McCall and Jed Chapman will be ones to watch as they develop through the GPS Club.

There needs to be special mention to Dan Nethery who worked with the 2017 Coaches to bring this side together. There were a variety of players in the group that had come from areas not normally in the traditional GPS Rugby talent pools.

Finally a big thank you to all those involved in the Premier Colts program this year. Patrick O’Connor and Dave Sheehan did a great job in bringing this side together and developing a solid platform for potential success in the years to come. Allan Berriman, came down from Grades to assist the newly formed coaching team and Beau Brammall was an excellent S&C looking after boys throughout the year.

See you in 2018.

Colts One

Coaches: Stephen Guthrie, John Taylor, Ryan Webster (M), Beau Brammell (S&C)

2017 brought many fresh faces into the Colts 1 group with only a handful of 2016 players returning to the colts program, as the majority moved into grades. Under the coaching direction of Stephen Guthrie and John Taylor the boys bonded well and only narrowly missed out on the top 4, having let a number of close games slip through their fingers on the run into the end of the season.

Despite not making it into finals there were many highlights with a number of boys making the step from Colts 1 into Premier Colts throughout the season as well as a number of the squad returning to play with Colts 2 through to the finals. Lachlann McKinnon, Ryan Pitts, Kieran Fender, Harry Martin, Tom Hogan and Joe Gavin all made an impact in their appearances in the higher teams as well as joining with Jacob Stower, Archie Attwool, Jayden Arndell Connor Trudgen and Sam Tucker that made consistent impacts throughout the season.

There was a great culture in the Colts 1 group this year, with training and game days being full of fun and enjoyment. The boys had a crack this year and worked hard to improve their performances finishing the season at home with a win over the eventual runners-up in the competition University.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people that made key contributions to the team. A big thank you to Daniel Nethery for his efforts and support this year as well as club CEO Anthony Herbert. Special mention to Aiden Fabris and Zach Guthrie who suffered injuries this season but still were art of the team and helped with water and touch judge responsibilities. Also, thanks for Beau Brammell who provided grate service to all Colts teams as our S&C.

To the coaches and manager of the other colts teams, Pat, Dave, Wombie, Chief& Ollie thanks for their support this year. Finally, to Steven and John thanks for the year and your 100% consistent commitment to the boys development both and off the field this season.

Best of luck and see you all in 2018.

Colts Two

Coaches: Daniel Boddice, Oliver McCall, Sam Scott, Beau Brammall (S&C)

You could easily some up the 2017 campaign as being eventful. A number of hard games, close losses, changing competitions and a split competition were all apart of what became a Premiership winning season.

With the addition of Oliver McCall to the coaches who were at the helm of last years team the colts season began slowly as the club suffered some early injuries that made getting player number a little harder then hoped. With the added complication of playing away from the rest of the Colts group for the most of their away games the team quickly learned how to battle through.

Originally set up as an eight team competitions, a few weeks into the season saw the addition of two teams with a plan to split into two separate competitions at the halfway point. Despite a valiant effort from the boys, who managed to beat two of the teams who ended up in the top half of the competition at the half way point we were joined by Brothers 2, University 2, Sunnybank and Wests in the Colts 3 comp.

After a few unexpected outcomes, the team ended up on top of the table and claimed the minor premiership having to face the two form sides in the final series. The boys certainly saved their best till last narrowly going down to Brothers in the major semi-final, then dispatching the students the week following, before showing Brothers how it was done with a big win in the Grand Final.

Captains Hamish Trudgen & Toby Taylor we solid all year with great performances from Rory Curtis, Patrick Lawson and many others providing all that were in attendance a positive outlook for the future.

A premiership doesn’t come without hard work from the players, coaching staff and supporters so there are a number of people to thanks. Special mentioned must go to Connor Riley, who was injured at the start of the year but returned to help with strapping before starting to play again in the last few rounds of the season. Also, thank you to Daniel Nethery who played a key role in helping the coaches and players this year. Lastly the coaches, Dan, Sam & Ollie, who did a great job in difficult circumstances.

See you in 2018.

Golden Gallopers

Season 2017 has been another good one for the GPS Golden Gallopers, the Club’s well-aged, but not so wise, over 35s rugby team.

As with seasons past, stories of our former rugby deeds were as heroic as they were false.

The GGs have enjoyed some decent games, a couple of bus trips to play teams farther afield and the Great Western Rumble, our annual Golden Oldies carnival hosted at Yoku Road. Some entertaining rugby was played throughout the year, sometimes even by us

The pre-season saw us make the trek to where we were hosted by the Newport golden oldies team. We stayed across the road from the fabulous Newport Hotel and all agreed it was a trip well-worth repeating.

In the spirit of recognising how much rugby has given us, and wanting to give back, we hosted our inaugural fundraising lunch at our principal sponsor’s digs The Alliance Hotel (with 50% of the profits to be contributed towards the GPS Juniors). The bearded half-back Tony ‘Baz’ Stephens suggested we invite former Wallabies or Reds players (one per table) to enjoy a relaxed afternoon of reliving glory days. A huge thanks to David Codey, , Dan Herbert, Matt Pini, Christiaan Knapp and the Golden Gallopers own Brad Condon plus GPS Prems skipper Dan Gorman and former Prems coach and current Reds assistant coach Shane Arnold. To a man, they were extremely entertaining and very generous of their time – for payment they received a beer and our hearty thanks.

The highlight, as with every season, is the camaraderie and enjoyment of pretending to be young again with good mates. Many thanks to the GGs committee, our sponsors the Alliance, Ordanga Properties and Toowong Mitsubishi, plus continued support from Billy’s Meats and our existing sponsor Bank of Queensland The Gap. Thank you also to the GPS Club for accommodating us on Friday night games, for making the facilities available on game day and particularly the Great Western Rumble, and to the canteen staff who run the show with military efficiency, but always with a smile.

The only pre-requisite to becoming a GPS Golden Galloper is an enjoyment of rugby and playing in the right spirit (ability to catch, pass and tackle are optional bonuses). Feel free to contact us on the details below if you have even an inkling of wanting to throw the pig skin around..

Regards

45 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2017

Treasurer’s Report

Firstly, I would like to say it’s been a privilege to act as Club Treasurer, this is an outstanding club to be a part of. Before some insight on the financial status of this year I would like to thank the current committee including previous treasurer Tony Hailing. The club was in a very positive financial position at the beginning of the year/playing season that had assisted the current committee.

Total income for the year is in excess of $1.5m and has produced a profit of over $100k. This has fallen short of our budgeted target, mainly due to an unsuccessful bore hole and Club break in totalling $40k,also we have setup an extensive ground maintenance program worth $50k, it still remains a positive number towards our cash reserves. Keep in mind we have an opening stock amount of $69k.

Primary source of income for GPS Rugby Club is:  Playing Fees and Membership $328k  Canteen & Merchandise $385k  Sponsorship $353k  Functions & Fundraising $292k

As a community based Club we are reliant on local businesses for their generous sponsorship and financial help from our members/supporters. This year we have boosted our asset register and have been able to upgrade our facilities within the club, they are as follows:  Total refurbishment of field 3 $180k (including a new surface and new goal posts)  Ride on mower with catcher $24k  Titan Shed $16k  Office upgrade (computer system) $20k

Finally, I would like to thank all our sponsors and volunteers for their continued help and support with the club, special mention to Anthony Herbert and Lorraine Gorman for efforts in canteen and running of our fine Club.

After a very successful 2017 on and off the field I look forward to being a part of this amazing Rugby Club in 2018.

Darren Dowse Treasurer
