Carol Foth, pictured at the left, taught art, English, Home Ec and was drama director from 1975-80. Joanne Bear, pictured at the right, started teaching in Tower City in 1973 before the consolida- tion of Tower City and Buffalo. During her time with the school districts, she taught music K-12 while also teaching in the elemen- tary classroom. She retired from teaching in 1976 to stay home to raise children. Coincidently, both women returned to teaching by becoming sub- stitute teachers in Valley City School District. Later both women became papaprofessionals for Sheyenne Valley Special Education. One would think that is were the similarities would end. Not true. Both Foth and Bear started working for the school district when Bear took on the responsibilitis as Superintendent Dean Koppel- man’s administrative secretary and has continued as a secretary at VCPS. Foth became an instructor/drama director in the VCPS sys- tem. Both have worked full-time for the district for 16 years. Both will retire this coming May at the end of the school year. Is that enough coincidence for you? Listen to this. Bear recently had knee replacement on her left leg. She will return to work at the beginning of February. Foth is having hip replacement surgery in early January. She, too, will return to work the beginning of Febru- ary. Foth joking states, “Between Joanne and I, we have three good legs!” On a side note, Barb Bjorum, who is substituting for Bear in her absence has also had hip replacement surgery. Bear is doing very well after her surgery, so we hope the similari- ties contiue and Foth does as well. Monthly Feature 4 The Bridges December 22, 2015 Info, insite, insider information: Get it here! Hager family makes joyful noise for community by Carol M. Foth The Valley City community is fortunate to have not only a recording artist in its own back yard, but an entire family which brings Christ- mas joy to the area. On December 13, despite dense fog, area resi- dents made their way to the Hager farm near Moon Lake to listen to the original Christmas songs written by country/western song writer Greg Hager of Valley City. The performance was presented in the loft of the barn on the 4th generation farmstead (established in 1883). Hager, his wife Andrea, and daughter Hannah sang a number of his Christmas selctions and Hager’s parents, Tim and Becky Hager, sang two selections, one of which is their favorite, “Silver Bells.” The Hager’s son William, read the Christmas story and joined his sister, Holly, in announcing the winning numbers of the raffle. Gifts were donated by area businesses to help support the family endeavour, which helped cover expenses connected with the event. Hager has been establishing his writing/singing career for approxi- mately the past seven years, although he has been singing since the age of seven. His sales career came to an end when he made the difficult decision to take the path less traveled and take a shot at becoming a country/western singer and song writer. But Hager’s drive to make it in the rugged world of rising to the top of country music has paid off. He has been nominated five times for Western Artist of the Year for his CD In the Valley Below, and named one of the top western performers in the U.S.A. Also he has written and produced more mu- sic than anyone in North Dakota. “Cowboy Dreaming,” off his album In the Valley Below, won Song of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists and was adapted by Royal Wade Kimes and recorded on his album as well. When Hager performs, all his material is 100% original gospel, western and country songs about life, living, love and faith.
