Some of you may recall that starred and won numerous awards for her portrayal on the silver screen of the legendary jazz singer Billie Holliday in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues. Well, on January 4, 2019, Ms. Ross will be starring again in silver but this time it will be in Lady Sings the Reds! That's because that night she will headline LIFE's 25th Annual Silver Jubilee Lady in Red Gala!

The quintessential singer and actress, Ms. Ross was the lead of one of 's most adored acts of all-time: the pioneering group . We all remember the group's hits; in fact, the words and melodies of songs such as "You Can't Hurry Love," "Come see About Me" and "Where did Our Love Go" are indelibly etched in our minds. These tunes made Diana Ross and The Supremes the most commercially successful of Motown's acts; today it is still America's most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles on the "." Moreover, Diana Ross and The Supremes make it possible for future African-American rhythm and blues and soul acts to find mainstream success.

Ms. Ross left the group for a solo career in 1969, but the hits didn't leave her. Indeed, many of her songs, including "," "Upside Down" and "" also reached number one, as did "Endless Love," her timeless duet with from the 1981 film of the same name.

Of course, the music stage was not the only place where Ms. Ross has captivated audiences in the U.S. and around the world. On the big screen, Lady Sings the Blues earned her a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She also starred in two other feature films, and , among others, and later on the small screen in several television films, including Out of Darkness, for which she also was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

And speaking of her honors, Ms. Ross was named the "Female Entertainer of the Century" by Billboard magazine, and the Guinness Book of World Records declared her the most successful female music artist in history, due to her success in the U.S. and the United Kingdom for having more hits than any female artist in the charts, with a career total of 70 hit singles with her work with The Supremes and as a solo artist. In 1988, she was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Supremes; in 2012, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; and just two years ago, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
